what is the best compact 9mm with a comfortable small grip, mags and availability? Kahr, Glock, XR9L, Walther, Sig, S&W etc....

Small grip I think puts you in M&P, Kahr, Walther territory. I think mag availability is something else entirely.

I've heard the CZ-75B 9mm is a pretty sweet pistol, and they're relatively cheap.

there was a shield at security 3 weeks ago, seems to be plenty of mags availablefor those. no m&p9c mags anywhere. gen 3 glock 26 has a fat grip, maybe gen4 is better.

Sig 239 kinda costly though. I like shooting my buddys one. Maybe a little big to call compact, but I don't think its a midsized frame

I have one in 9mm and love it. real nice natural point of aim. very little recoil for a subcompact 9mm handgun

The cz 75b is not so compact, but I agree it is a sweet shooting handgun. If you were interested in CZ's, I would look into the CZ75 p01 (9mm), CZ 75 p06 (40 s&w) P07 Duty or the CZ Rami. As for magazines locally, I haven't seen any specifically for the compacts, but I have a p01 and know that the full size mag will fit... OGC has/had mags in both 9mm and 40 sw.
As for price range... I have seen them as low as $499 to $599 and more, with the market now probably the higher range. As for reliability, I have a P01 and a Cz 75b 40, I have put close to 1000 rounds through each and probably had 6 malfunctions (some due to limp wristing trying new techniques). They are more accurate than I am and felt recoil is minimal.

as far as small grips go, i rather like the grip on the XDM. i can reach everything with my small hands, which is surprising for a pistol designed to hold 19 rounds.
but the guys at OGC told me mags are impossible to find.

I bought a Glock 26 Gen 4 in mid November and only started shooting it in January. Added a Crimson Trace red laser sight and really like that. The grip of the Gen 4 models is adjustable. Without a back strap added, the grip is the same size as the Glock SF (Small Frame) version of the Gen 3.
Of course, the mag is double-stacked, so you get 10 round capacity in a subcompact model standard. That does make the grip just a bit wider than a 7 round single-stacked pistol.

I voted for the Walther PPS in 9mm (also available in .40) as the slimmest most compact CCW type pistol. It basically disappears unless you need it. Nice choice of mags in 3 different capacities 6, 7 or 8 round. I love how it shoots and pretty used to the paddle mag release as I have a P99 to begin with. My trigger finger automatically indexes the frame then use middle finger to drop the mag. The build quality is excellent.
Next up I want to see the new XDS in 9mm though I don't need it having the PPS and already got the XDS .45 too. Dimension wise they are nearly identical to the PPS! It looks to be another winner from Springfield Armory. The XDS has a slight edge since it has a brilliant fiber optic front sight. I love Springfield Armory as well :D
GL - great time to be a gun buyer now, lots of choices. Just have to have patience for extras.

Compact or Sub Compact?
Ex. Glock 19 or M&P 9C would be a compact. Glock 26 or M&P Shield would be a sub compact.
For a compact I like the Glock 19, Kahr, Walther, SigP229.

From what I was hearing....The XDs in 9mm is the shooter of 2013 as far as size goes! A lot of people were looking at it at the shot show 2013. I don't know about reliability though.

+3 on the m&p shield. Took it to the range and for such a small pistol, one of the RSOs made a really nice 1-2" bullseye group with it bench-rested at 25 yards.

+4 for the shield. I love mine. Grip is small and comfortable. Overall better then expected for it's size, but it is a compact. I suggest the 8rd mags though.

The real question for me boiled down to PPS 9mm vs. XDS .45 All things being equal I would rather put big smoky 230 gr. hole(s) in a bad guy. Then again if load up really hot 9 mm the performance gap narrows. Arghh! But I don't think my wife could handle the .45 and definitely not hours of practice with it. So here's the current deal, we both have PPS so that's that. Well, there's more to that story but let's stick to 9 mm. Same training, same mags, same ammo, same holsters.
Now if the XDS 9 came out any earlier that would've been quite the predicament -but- I think it would've won this argument because of the FO sight and ever so slightly better grip with that wicked calamari pattern (which are sans finger bumps of the PPS). The package deal with mags and holsters icing on the cake. I would've bought 2 right there and started the hunt for mags. I'm still waiting on mags now.
I don't regret the Walther purchase in the least though, they are high quality firearms, completely reliable thus far and trustworthy. Thank you OGC. Springfield was just a little tardy to the slim 9mm party.
Whoever's in the market now is very lucky selection wise!

It has been a long road trying to find the right piece for her and to tell the truth it's mostly me because I recoiled in horror to learn she carried (back in a free state) a dang Taurus PT111 M-pro. That scared me because of all the crap you hear about their legendary unreliability. But yeah, the tiny gun fits her hands and is easy to operate the slide etc. I've no doubt she'd like shooting my 1911s too - she qualified with one in the Navy - but that's not a carry gun for her by any stretch of the imagination. I have an EMP but the thing is quite heavy so that was out too.
Now believe it or not, the first gun she tried and liked as a replacement was a full size M&P 9mm! We tried all the 9s back then but that was the one she liked best at the range. Done. I bought my first XDm same time - 19+1 and all that what was not to like! Gun of Year rollmark! Anyways they all got neutered when we brought into state. And we lost the right to carry too. Sad.
She has issues at times with grip strength. That is a big problem with any manipulation of the weapons - from racking it to pulling the trigger. Big problems. We all grow old :( So we have all kinds of smaller calibers which are very easy to function for her. But we know they are not one shot stoppers and don't reach desired penetration even on skinny framed targets so the shopping continued to find the right one. I don't know. Am going to try a pound or two lighter recoil spring on her PPS see what happens. The gritty trigger is now pretty much gone after break in. I've swapped in metal guide rods for the plastic ones to help mitigate recoil.
The Taurus sits in the safe because the rear sight screw went missing years ago and it was a year long travesty to get a replacement. If the thing will shoot 200 out of 200 maybe I will change my mind about that one and cry over all the time and money wasted!
When this state finally follows the Constitution I'll get her a nice Glock if she wants. She shot a friends comp gun and loved it! (argh!) Well, always more to say but way off topic? No can one size fits all that's for sure.

I'd stay away from the P7. Nice gun but if she has grip strength issues, then a grip cocker pistol is probably not for her.
Aiea with regards to it being a carry gun, sorry didn't realize it would be. With regards to trigger weight, 1911 can be the lightest, but the M&P are pretty light as it is.

The glock 26 is both light, and reliable. What more could you ask from a gun.
