Went to Lanai last weekend just for a day.  It was my first hunt and didn't get any pictures since I didn't have a chance to kill a deer.  Oh well, it was fun just getting out and feel the rush.
OP, nice kills  :shaka:
Looking forward to seeing more pics of others on their hunting trips.

I know for us it's more like a population management for deer on the ranch . A lot of money goes into barley & alfalfa hay for the cattle and horses. Most times the deer 's get to it first .

I used to hunt on Molokai all the time and have seen the damage caused. If anything eradication is needed to those areas to preserve it.

I don't think paulb3 knows the importance of eradication.

That fact sheet is for hawaii county. Those eradication pictures are for Maui county. Molokai and the big island have different issues in regards to eradication. You can stop stalking me on the forum now.

From what I understand is they have a grandfather clause and a big service insurance bond incase of escape.  I dont think its allowed anymore.  The fence is pretty damn high and has mesh view blockers.  Working animal control you find out oahu has had some interesting animals on island.

Iguana, snakes and other reptiles were pretty common and even piranhas.   Ive had hybrid cats usally lynx or something else predatory, even questionable hybrid dogs usually wolf.
In the 80s kuuloa had some orangutans but from what I heard they needed a huge animal escape bond in the millions.   I had a buddy look inyo trying to get orangs with a bond, not impossible but easily to build and finace what is needed.

I haven't been seeing the herds in our area like we used to. Theres lots of tracks through so not sure if its wrong time of day or they only coming out at night. Other guys that work the same area as us haven't been seeing the deer too. Lots of fences been cut recently too, so areas the deer would hide and rest have been getting pushed out. Leads me to believe the deer are always on the move and not staying in areas long or got pushed out completely. Hopefully they come back soon.
This is only what I've seen in our area. I'm sure other areas are different.
We suppose to hunt the weekend so I'll let you know how it looks then.

I had the pleasure of hunting on Lana'i this weekend and was fortunate to harvest these two animals. Both were taken deep in the valley so you can only imagine how much work it took for me to get them out.

The weather was sunny and hot; I cant' wait for deer season. Cheeeehoooo!

Thanks gunner for the comments.

It's is a LA  Ruger 7mm, with a Timney trigger bedded action, and a 3.5-10x40 Leupold Boone Crockett.

The ewe was shot at 268ish yds on the run after missing a similar ewe at 130 same herd.  Go figure.  I probably would have done better if I closed my eyes.
The non-typical ram was taken at 134 yds.  The shot was a pass though at the shoulders, it ran with another ewe behind the mountain and I  loss sight of it. Thinking that I missed, I sat bewildered and upset with myself on my performance.  After a few minutes, I saw the ewe it was with across a washout without the ram.  Knowing that they stay together, I decided to take a look.  It took me about 1/2 hr. to get to the other side of the mountain.  As I approached, some spots of blood were spotted. Following the trail of blood back to where I shot it, I found a significant amount of blood with bone fragments.  I knew then it was a good shot. Slowly making my way on the blood trail, the ram was spotted approximately 50 yds away in a ravine.  I was ecstatic. The pack out was brutal, but well worth the experience.

My game isn't quite as "large" as some of the ones I've seen so far.  While my prey lacks in size I make up for it in quantity.

Vac sealers are great and it keeps the meat etc a lot longer than ziplocs etc.

It isn't marinated my bradda but you can make a curing brine as well. I cure mine for weeks depending on what I make then cold smoke with apple, hickory or a blended mix of woods for 10-12 hrs come out wicked.  I haven't eaten store bought bacon in a while  :shaka:

Awesome animals that black bear is a healthy one!!!  LH I had to laugh when you mentioned the 35mm and flip phone have a few hunting buddies that refuse to upgrade lol.  I just crack up when I see them text the old school way by pushing the numbers multiple times to get the letter they want.
Title: Re: Hunting pics
Post by: loyalhunter on August 18, 2015, 04:54:00 PM
I was the last in my hunting group to get an upgrade. But I still take a disposal 35mm camera on my hunts....just in case lol. Some old habits are just too difficult to rid oneself of. Still take a ribbing for it.
The bear was a nice chocalate colored boar. Took him with my custom 98 Mauser rifle in 35 Whelen. Squared about 5'-5". The Trophy Bonded Bear Claw plowed through two feet of thick corded muscle and broke the shoulder blade and it's ball joint; hitting the off lung in the process. The bear dropped on the spot.
When hunting game such bear, moose and large feral pigs like to use Swift A-Frames, Speer Trophy BBCs and
Nosler Partitions. As you know, other bullets like Barnes X and Triple Shocks are great choices too. Some hunting buddies and aquaintences swear by them. Thanks!

Favorite hunting is upland birds using pointing and flushing dogs. Shooting skeet, trap and sporting clays is fun; however, the explosion of a game bird or a covey of them is an adrenaline rush for me. Here are some pics. from hunts on the Big Island and Oahu.
