Thought I'd make thread for ar15 upgrades
Post your recommended upgrades or ones that you have questions on
Some I'm thinking of trying:
side folding adapter:

EBRv2
I already have a magpul BAD lever on my DD but I was thinking of getting the phase 5 EBRv2 for my new build since I haven't installed everything yet anyway. Then I could compare the 2

I'm personally liking the idea of the BAD ASS safety for shooting weak side. You should get it so I can sample :worship: jkin. As far as the side folding adapter, how long has that been in production? I've always been skeptical to try new things that do not have a proven track record, but like the idea for storage purposes.
Only item on my "wish list" right now
1. mounted weapon light - kinda looking into this

you're welcome to try if i get it.
as for the folding stock, did a quick googly search and came up on some valid, and not so valid, points. Here's new info I found
If the gun is fired with the stock open, the bolt will be locked, it won’t injury the user.
The Bolt Carrier Extension part, when installed correctly, will hold the Bolt Carrier Group in place.
**
**The Bolt Carrier Extension will also stop the Bolt Carrier Group from flying out and causing any injury or loss of life if someone should accidentally fire the weapon with the stock folded. If fired when folded, the locking finger will bend, preventing further operation of the weapon until it is replaced. This is done to eliminate the possibility of catastrophic failure of the adaptor due to repeated misuse.
It's a very new concept that just came out. It'll be a while before we'll know how good they really are
a weapon light for my AR is definitely on my "someday will get" list. I'm in no rush and I feel the longer I wait, the better the technology and pricing will be.

I have the BAD CASS 45; its a beefed up version of the BAD ASS and a 45 degree throw versus the traditional 90 degree.
It's, well bad ass....probably one of my favorite pieces on my new build. The lever is super solid and the different options are nice ( I went with shorts)
I go to the HDF shoots and you're welcome to try it out

Might just have to take a leap of faith and get one... Thx for the offer! Just joined HDF from the last gun show and can't wait to get out there for a fun shoot.

I have BAD-ASS safeties on both my AR's love them, I would recommend them if asked.

I think I'll get a bad ass
Btw before I forget

oh, I want one
-
will that fit on a noveske gen II lower? I tried the bad lever but it rubbed against the lower.....
-
The side folding stock is definitely interesting.
I already run ambi safties when I can and the BA is one that I already use amongst others.
-

It should. It doesn't make the bolt catch thicker like the bad lever. Bad lever didn't work in my lwrc. Kept making the bolt lock back after every shot

What are your guys thoughts on anti roll pins? Some say its not necessary and is overkill on semis. I was thinking of getting some anyway since they're cheap and easy to install. Should help with slide fires I think
-
Not really necessary IMHO, but I've got them on anyway.
-

All I know is DO NOT use with Geissele triggers. Geissele comes with their own pins that are recommended for use. I do not think it is necessary, but I've always been in the "rather have it and not need it than not have it and need it" group, so I don't see why not
-
There are thousands of M16s, M4s and the like in govt. inventory that do not have those KNS anti-walk pins. If the trigger is installed correctly they will not walk nor is it necessary to worry about them spinning either.

Doesn't matter with the Geissele.
-
Doesn't matter with the Geissele.
If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your information to come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter? It states in the instructions given with Geissele trigger groups to use ONLY their pins. There are also numerous "sources/forums" discussing this, which as I read leans away from using the particular brand of KNS anti-roll pins with Geissle triggers.
*MOD if you are against adding info from another forum let me know and I will remove.

It doesn't matter because I have KNS pins on my rifles w/Geissele triggers. In fact every one of my AR15/AR10 rifles have Geiselle triggers. Some have the anti-walk pins, some don't. All function 100%.

Geissele Automatics - SSA Install - FULL VERSION (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9nfsa7Q5cg#ws)
From the horses mouth.

GZire, if it works for you that's cool. But I'm going off of what has been said by people (Geissele) who have been doing this a lot longer than myself. I play it safe.
:stopjack:
-
I know, as I get the stupid questions every day. And I have the extra bushings needed to replace the originals after some idiot put a KNS pin in and smashed the c clip. If you have a Geissele trigger use the pins provided. Geissele trigger pins are not made like standard trigger pins. Throw out the stupid fuckin KNS pins, they have NO place being used with Geissele triggers. Soon Bill will make it policy that if you do something stupid like put the KNS pin in a Hi-Speed and ruin the c-clip, its your loss with no warranty coverage or support.
Because the rotating, perfectly round Geissle pin doesnt hurt a thing. Congratulations, you replaced a precision made piece of equipment with an undersized mass produced piece of crap. Instead of having a properly sized pin rotating harmlessly, you now have a pin slamming back in fourth in the hammer/trigger holes.
The general ignorance of the common AR15 owner is just sad, but they sure love their add on gadgets to show off in the picture threads. KNS pins and tactical trigger guards for all!
I never understood the concept of skimping on the quality parts in a $170 trigger to save imaginary wear and tear on a $100-150 lower?
In short, if you own a Geissele trigger and have it held in place with KNS pins, you're a moron.

Light (momentary activation only) with offset mount only $149.00 (not including shipping), which is actually dirt cheap when you compare it to the price of Surefire scout w/ mount. Just a heads up if you haven't seen it yet.

Are you trying to find where it's comfortable to mount it? Which mounting option did you go with? Reason I ask is if I do get the Inforce WML I was looking at getting the offset thorntail mount. I know I want the light around the 10 o'clock position.

Yeah, I have it mounted at 10 o'clock right now which seems the best position for me so far, but I'm going to try various other positions just to make sure I'm not missing out on a more comfortable set up. I went with the offset mount as well, it is great to have more options on placement.

After looking did you have to modify anything on your lower?

"BAD-CASS-ST-SA will NOT fit in the standard/normal AR-Style Lower Receivers without the safety relief cut due to the safety pin/block device on the BAD-CASS-ST-SA. Any modification to the safety selector will render the warranty null and void."
Haven't looked into it a whole lot yet, but this threw me off.

I have talked to Lifer about this. You need to remove the pin on the safety lever for it to insert into standard lowers. Easier to modify the cheaper part.

Mahaloz for the info! :shaka:

Haley's light version is cool but no IR as the original. That part I don't understand.

Shane is right.
The safety block pin ( or what alot call the "lawyer" pin) is easily filed down. The link below shows a pic of the safety pin; it's the tiny silver pin sticking out the side and I had it filed away in 5 minutes.

Lol, I was just stuck on the fact that I would have to modify the piece that I'm buying. I don't doubt that it is an easy process, but why isn't it already good to go?

From my understanding there are only a few AR lower manufacturers with a 45 degree safety lever throw and they are proprietary/ patented. The AR lowers that are made for the 45 degree levers have a tiny relief cut in them to allow the safety pin to pass thru. BAD Industries had to add the safety pin to avoid litigation, but used real soft metal ;)

I'm probably going to get one of those IO covers. I heard it fits the micro dot with minor modification

I'm a huge fan of the bad lever. I also highly recommened the BCM "gunfighter" charging handle. Makes left hand manipulations so much easier, and there is nothing wrong with a beefier charging handle.
And don't forget a good sling. I have the Magpul ms3, but if I were to buy a new one, I think I'd get the Ares.
-
that Ares sling looks pretty nice. I might pick one up and compare it to my VTAC

I have one on one of my uppers. When you start talking quad rail, heavy barrel, redi-mod...........all of it adds up. Don't be surprised with the weight increase.

Doesn't it go on the Lower? Anyways, I won't have to worry, going m4gery with gov profile and MOE handguard. Basically as light as possible without a lightweight profile barrel, since I hated my last heavy barrel upper with a quad rail.

Yes it goes around the magwell. I just happen to have it paired with an upper with a heavy barrel and quad rail. Sucker is pretty heavy in comparison so some setups.
I do like the setup (except for the weight), but if you have short fingers it isn't the easiest to actuate the redi-mod magazine release. You running a BAD or similar on the rifle too?

The one I shot did have a BAD on it. The rifle belonged to another member here on 2a that I met at the range a few weeks back, I cant remember his forum handle.
I would definitely not want it with a heavy barrel and quad rail, my AA piston upper had a HB and quad rail and it was way too front heavy, I can't imagine that paired with the redi-mag.
Personally I really dislike the BAD which is why I bought a Mega ambi billet lower but after 6 months I still haven't bought any parts to build it up. So i still have no idea if it was a worthwhile purchase over the $25 Bad lever.

These AR 15 Trigger Adjusters are made from Stainless Steel. They replace the standard grip screw and have an internal set screw to adjust the trigger pull in your AR15, AR 10 and M&P22. They help eliminate pre-travel, creep and help reduce the pull weight on standard Mil-Spec trigger groups and can be used with many aftermarket triggers as well. The adjusters can be used alone or as part of a complete trigger job.

Serious question: on average (not including optics) how much have you all dropped on your aftermarket AR upgrades? Guesstimates are okay, too.
Geissele trigger SSA-E/ Magpul UBR stock / Magpul MIAD pistol grip = around $500
-
Who the hell dropped that AR into the puddle...don't they know that ARs stop working if they get wet or dirty?!?

Aimpoint $650
VLTOR or SOPMOD stock say $100
Sling $50
Tango Down shorty VFG $60
Tango Down Aimpoint cover $30
Tango Down pistol grip $60
DD fixed front sight $60
ARMS #40 rear sight $120
Surefire X300 $200
Total $1330 or so
Damn, that was a lot more than I thought. I also have three ARs that are configured similarly. :o
-
.
-
If it makes you feel any better, subtracting the cost of the Aimpoint would drop your total expenditure to just 7 bills.... times three!
Not really. :)
I could've bought more guns! Haha

installed a PSA 2 stage, 4.5 lbs trigger
its on the bottom of the pic, top is the milspec one
feels way better just dry firing it, much lighter. 1st stage is an easy take up, 2nd stage is short and much lighter than the milspec one
1st stage is 2 lbs, 2nd is 2.5 lbs
it was $70
i'll try it out soon

Interesting. Let us know how it goes.
I have a few Geisseles that I bought on sale over time. Finally getting around to finishing up the uppers on a couple, so will be installing the triggers soon. Have stuck with USGI triggers so far, so looking forward to the change.

The coated/treated BCG is one that I've never tried. I've shot friends or test guns with them, but never had to clean them, so couldn't tell difference. ;D
Will be interesting to see if or how the coating or treatment wears. One aspect of the AR action that I tend to notice is wear points and if they change or is different than normal.
-
this was the last build I did, my 4th AR build. several months ago
parts I used:
Ruger lower
PSA assembled upper with 18" stainless barrel, with 15" keymod handguard, chambered in .223 Wylde
ambi CH
PSA nickel/boron BCG
Magpul MOE K2 pistol grip
Kaw Valley Precision 4.3 oz buffer
Tom's Tactical enhanced nickel/Teflon trigger (essentially the same as ALG ACT trigger), now I changed it to a PSA 2 stage 4.5 lbs trigger
JP tuned and polished extra power buffer spring
LuthAR MBA3 stock

installed a PSA 2 stage, 4.5 lbs trigger
its on the bottom of the pic, top is the milspec one
feels way better just dry firing it, much lighter. 1st stage is an easy take up, 2nd stage is short and much lighter than the milspec one
1st stage is 2 lbs, 2nd is 2.5 lbs
it was $70
i'll try it out soon

trigger is much better than the milspec one. much lighter and 2 stage.
accuracy was better but I was only using Federal bulk 223 black box loose ammo so I assume I wont get great accuracy with this ammo anyways
next i'll try with some match grade ammo and see how it is
but i'm very satisfied with the trigger

$70 is a good price. How would you rate the PSA 2 stage against the more expensive triggers? I've tried the PSA EPT when it first came out - it was just OK. Not sure if it was nickel finished back then.

Nice!
Got two builds almost complete on the “base” of things. Will try to post the details later.

not sure how it compares to more expensive triggers, I've only shot my friends' more expensive triggers.
but from the limited use of those more expensive ones, they are a little better, lighter
but for $70 its very good

looks similar to the Rock River 2 stage trigger.
