It's not covered much in the American media but our military is provoking the hell out of them by spending millions of dollars flying in b2's and dropping fake nukes. All this while the propaganda machine is cranking out movies like "Olympus has Fallen" it seems like someone in the Pentagon has a hard-on for conflict.

Even a very minor conventional attack on PH or K-bay By NK  will create havoc on traffic and a run on the stores.

Hell a flat tire or minor traffic accident cripples the roadways, let alone some type of attack.

Instead of a gun/ammo gouger, people can become batter/water/TP gougers!!

hawaii is one of the worlds more secure locations in the world.  that being said I think we should take a pre-emptive strike against n korea and send them back to the stone ages!

why take the chance?

Your comment made me think about the classic Mafia movie "Casino". At about 1:10 in the clip Remo says "Why Take a Chance" referring to allowing witnesses to live or die.

... and send them back to the stone ages!

Wouldn't take much...

The reason we don't, though, is that China is bound by treaty to defend N. Korea from any attack.

This is something we haven't seen for a while: a classic cold war-style standoff.

The difference is that we aren't really that concerned about China and aren't trying to kick Communist Butt in N. Korea. Our goals - on the surface of it, at least - seems to be to keep N. Korea from pursuing its nuclear program any further. That would destabilize things too much for our interests.

N. Korea still has FAR more to gain from ~having~ a nuclear weapon than it does from using it. I'm not sure what they will DO with their state of war declaration, but I don't yet see how actually going to war will benefit them.

The trick we have is defending S. Korea - which is our obligation by treaty - without attacking N. Korea directly - which might force China's engagement. If S. Korean troops attack N. Korea then China will have to engage. Simplest thing, and the most expedient for us diplomatically, is to be ready to defend the border and crush any invasions in to S. Korea.

N. Korea likes to think it can attack the US. It ~might~ but doing so would bring the Hammer of the Gods down upon them without mercy and the world, largely, would approve. Doing so might also nullify the defense treaty with China. From what I understand China isn't all that keen to defend N. Korea and is more interested in preserving the peace along its border. China's current troop concentration near N. Korea seems more about keeping the conflict from spilling out into China than it is an expression of willingness to co-invade S. Korea.

So N. Korea has a lot to gain from making lots of noise but relatively little to gain from actual aggression.

As for the poll... I always have a fair amount of supplies on hand and things like this don't spur me to buy more of that kind of stuff. I buy more when I've consumed too much and need to restock. Its just prudence here and not paranoia.

To the best of my knowledge, these fake bombs were dropped on SOUTH Korea. A training exercise and show of force but completely legal and not a violation of N. Korean space.

They might see it as provoking but its really more of a warning.

"Look, idiots. we don't even needs rockets to bomb your little country. If we want we can just fly there with planes you can't detect and place our ordinance wherever we damned well please. Get it? We don't even need South Korea's help. We can wake up in America, have breakfast in America, fly over and bomb you for lunch and be home in time for dinner."

But... some longer term perspective:

http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/28/world/asia/korea-us-b2-flights (http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/28/world/asia/korea-us-b2-flights)

"Pyongyang has expressed fury over the sanctions and the annual U.S.-South Korean military exercises, which are due to continue until the end of April.

The North has claimed that the exercises are tantamount to threats of nuclear war against it.

Sharp increases in tensions on the Korean Peninsula have taken place during the drills in previous years. The last time the North cut off military communications with the South was during similar exercises in March 2009."

I like to think of it this way...

N. Korea: Very upset two year old that keeps throwing his teddy out of the crib onto the floor...

U.S.A.: Nanny who is watching him and really should disipline him... but yet is afraid to, because...

China: Mom who is watching the whole scenario, upset with her kid, But yet not doing anything about it, waiting to see who will spank her child...if anyone....

The U.N. including.... S. Korea, Japan, Guam, Australia, Hawaii & the rest: Older siblings who are really getting pissed off about this whole bull sh*t scenario and wants someone to teach this kid a lesson before he flips over the potty!!!

A cushion that would ensure our starvation should some "doomsday" event happen worldwide.

+1  this is the reason why I don't even bother to prep and I laugh at all in Hawaii who does!  I dare you to try to protect yourself or your family against 500k-1.3 million starving, angry, and scared people when your isolated in a place which is surrounded by water by at least 2000 miles in every direction!!!  I don't care if you have a 10 GE minigun and a warehouse full of ammo and car batteries to run it on, your not making it out alive...  I mean lets say you manage kill ever single person on the island trying to get to your food, your still stuck in the middle of no where with no renewable food source and little water!

Note:  This is a off topic rant...

Ok,  I hate that every time I hear anything about prepping it is immediately assumed by what I think is the majority of people that it's for some type of doomsday event.  I fuckin hate it.  To me it lame to not be AT LEAST prepared for a few days in the event of a natural disaster.  I mean, are you thinking that everyone that preps is trying to outlast a nuclear strike?

Rant off...

 :stopjack:

I find it funny hearing stuff on the news that I'm technically not supposed to even talk about at work

No renewable food?  Little water?
It rains nearly daily on some part of every island. The ocean, and mountains abound with things to eat if you have the skills and tools to obtain them. And the local farmers seem to grow a fair amount of produce, and if agrabuisness shuts down and that land is used for growing staple crops instead of sugar cane... irrigation to most of the lowland fields is gravity fed... no need power to water those crops.
If the right people with the right skills work togeather... we'd do alright.

Before the white man came and helped wipe out the natives,  the old hawaiians did a pretty good job of getting by without too much trouble. And from what I understand, they had a pretty large population.
Would it be easy?  No...  but it could be doable.

Those who can recognize an survive on simple foods and know how to grow raise or hunt them will get by.
Those that expect to get thier food handed to to them in little plastic packages, and think that beef grinds itself to make hamburgers, and that goat isnt a fine eatin' animal will either probably perish, or become field hands for the farmers.   I wouldnt mind seeing a few formerly  rich guy tourists working in the fields...  >:D

The more prepared people are in a SHTF scenario, the sooner society gets back on its feet and order restored. Instead of panicking and looking for basic necessities, a prepared person can be involved in getting things back in order and getting a sense of order back to society.

On the other hand, someone who doesn't prepare when they should is either in denial, too lazy or a "wolf" waiting for a SHTF to happen.
