Heard my roommate yelling at 2am so I go into the living room. He says he heard and saw someone jumping the fence in the back of our house. He says he's going to drive around the block and look for the guy. I grab my mag light and start walking to the street. I see an unknown car in the driveway with the windows down and back door open. When I get to the road I wait for a couple of minutes and I see a guy walking. I'm staring at him the whole time to see how he acts. He doesn't look nervous. He's not breathing hard. My roommate said the guy was booking it. The guy walks past me, says what's up and keeps walking. I'm taking note of his features and what he's wearing. He never turns back around. I go back to the house and look closer at the suspicious car. Ignition is popped. Shit. I knock on my neighbors door and tell him to call the cops. Shit. What if there's more guys still around. I hurry to my bedroom, open my handgun safe and place my sig in a hidden but easy to access area. I do a sweep of the house with my maglight inside and out. I figure if there are some bad guys still around, I will retreat back to my room. Coast is clear so I lock up the house and go back to the street where my roommate is being followed by a cop. Cop comes over and says he was chasing the guy when he was driving but lost him. He confirmed it was a stolen car. More cops come and they're outside right now searching and finger printing the car.
I don't know if I could've done differently. I do wish I brought my phone with me when I went out to investigate. Just in case I needed to call for help or I could've taken a pic of that guy. I don't know how he'd react to that though. I might laying stabbed in the street right now if it was a dangerous bad guy that was running from the cops.

Wow. Gettting bad these days. If it were me I would have not left my defensible area, unless absolutely necessary, 911 first thing, then 1911. With all these organized home invasions happening lately, I'd be careful about trying to follow the guys, you might get jumped.

Know thy neighbor. Or at least who is from the neighborhood. If it was someone I didn't recognize I would have lit them up.

I've told people stuff like in our firearm safety course. Walking around outside, alone, where you can't really have a firearm and stuff is a really - really stupid idea. If you didn't get a description, stay in side and call the cops. Don't go looking for the guy. I even tell students that it's a bad idea to go moving around your home alone if you think someone was in there. My thought process: if trained soldiers and marines would never clear a home alone, why would you?
Do you want to be the next George Zimmerman? Want your life ruined? Want to not be able to get a job because you went looking for someone in the middle of night, found them, got into an altercation and something bad happened, and now you get in trouble for playing batman?
Be smart.

Dirsh where do you live?

well that's a bowl full of Sketcho's

Always call 911 first...

At least carry a knife outside but know how to use it or pepper spray. Dont take the gun outside!
-
I live in Kaimuki. I think the guy rushed off the freeway and ditched the car
next time I'll just call the cops and barricade myself in my bedroom...armed

I agree. Once you pull that trigger even if you are in the right and inside your home, your life will change forever in an instant. I'm not even talking about the mental guilt if you have any of that. I'm talking about the fact that the other guys family and friends are gonna come after you for some retribution, if the guy survives he is gonna try to sue you and might come after you for some payback with a gun of his own when your not expecting it, your gonna lose your weapon and you gonna have to shell out a shit load of cash for bail, your spending at least one day at the police station and if your guns are not 110% legal you can be in jail or even prison for quite a while, your professional career can suffer and so can your familie's when people find out what you did (even if your in the right, gossip in hawaii is crap cuz its such a small place). the list goes on and on. Stay inside with your friends and family and let the police deal with anything outside. Only shoot if that is absolutly the last option you have between you or your loved ones, and death! Insurance will cover any theft or broken property. Don't be a hero, your seriously not being paid enough for it! Heck if you still have the gun in hand when the police show up, they might shoot you accidnetly... becareful, it aint a game!

Not sure how busy your area is at 2am but in a typical neighborhood when something like this happens I definitely would not stroll past some dude out walking the street at that time of day which in itself is very suspicious. In this day and age, it would probably be best to assume that when you walk past he is going to turn around and stab/shoot you or something

Once one leaves their home (or business, place of sojourn, etc) to pursue someone, doesn't that change everything? I don't know the exact wording of the law, but I recall Dr. Max Cooper mentioning something about you have to make attempt to avoid the conflict, with the exception being you aren't expected to leave your home. I believe the example Dr. Max Cooper uses is if you have an "encounter" on the freeway, the other driver flips you the bird, you return the favor. He pursues you and you drive home, get your firearm and he comes on your property and you shoot him that in that case, use of deadly for is not justified. The alternative to avoid would be to drive to a police station, public place and call for help, etc.
I am NOT saying that I agree with it. The law is what it is. I hope I'm not misquoting Dr. Max Cooper, but that's what I recall. That once you pursue, you then become the aggressor.
Anyway, that's some sketchy shat for sure.

I live in Kaimuki.
me too.
a lot of riff raff around lately.
a few weeks ago while smoking a cigar outside my house saw a male and female walking then the guy shines a flashlight in my car searching the inside while he was walking.
i say to the guy, "see anything you like?"
he just laughs and keeps going. didn't recognize them from the neighborhood.
i hung outside my house for another 2 hours in case they came back, but nothing.
later talking to a neighbor and cop, says diamond head and kapahulu has been some break ins lately.
this was a couple months ago.
back on topic,
glad nobody was hurt.
and gotta look out on the mean streets of kaimuki.

Okay, maybe Hawaii Loa is immune, but that's about it...
 I felt somewhat immune when I used to live up there. Until I heard construction workers and the like were breaking into houses.

lot of valid points here. Me and my roommate think old school, so we were gonna go outside and tunda. The way things are nowadays, that would be a stupid idea.
point taken. stay inside. call police. live to see another day

Yes you are contributing to the situation. In CCW classes that is mentioned. Again this is in Hawaii though, so what applies here doesn't necessarily apply in another state/federal lands.

Thats scary bro. Im glad nothing happened

You know you old school, when you use the term "tunda". On a serious note, I live in Kaimuki too and it's upsetting, hearing about all these things happening, in the neighborhood. That, and the self defense laws in Hawaii are horrible. They protect the bad guys, more than the people defending their homes. Just ridiculous.

Ask yourself this, What would you have done if you found the perp when you were looking around outside? If the guy bolted, what then? Chase him down the street with a loaded pistol? Even worse, What if you came across more than one perp outside? Most people would think you're in the right but this ain't the wild west. Best thing to do now is get some really bright flood lights with motion sensors facing your driveway and along the walkways and rear of your home. Don't be a hero man. Doesn't sound so manly but that is the responsibility of a firearms owner. Besides your more likely to shoot an innocent person by way of collateral damage and or mis-identification in the low light. What would you do then?

said he grabbed a maglite, not a gun

Now this may be the Georgia upbringing in me talking, but if there was a confirmed suspicious person sighting on my property, I would definitely grab my 1911 first, then call 911 from a defended position once my family has been accounted for...
So glad Im heading for the free state of Texas soon, time to shop for some evil high capacity handgun magazines.
