Post by: bparages on April 07, 2013, 11:14:18 PM
Just got into casting and molding bullets for 44spl...does anyone have of  a suggestion on lead mix? i have 200lbs of wheel weight, about 50 lbs of pure lead, 45 pounds of tin/lead solder bars....just trying a few batches until my hardness tester die kit arrives.. Im reloading for revolver 44spl..200 grn fn mold. I did couple batches to make ingots..98%wheel weight with 2% tin....50/50 ww and pure lead with added tin.....

9 lbs. wheel weights and 1 lb of 60/40 bar solder  will yield 10 lbs of alloy suitable for pistol bullets.
This alloy will have approx 5% tin for castability and about 2% Antimony for hardness.

just what I've been finding on internet and trial and error. I did a 10lb smelt with the 9lbs and 1lb mix.  looks and shoots well... was having a problem with frosted looking bullets...think I corrected with smelt and mold temp. no leading of barrel and so far accurate enough for silhouette...thx OF....
