Title: Warding off mosquitoes while pig hunting
Post by: RyDN E-zey on April 26, 2013, 06:06:46 AM
For some reason, I get pounded by the skeeterz when I go hunting pig in the bush. I cover up head to toe but they try to bite me where my camo ninja mask doesn't cover around my eyes. What can I use so the pigs can't smell the repellent? I have natural citronella plants. Do I go all rambo and put mud on my exposed skin? I am getting desperate and thinking of putting tape on my skin as a barrier, I'm bow hunting so I don't want to move by swatting all the time.  Need help, I hate these mosquitoes

Maybe you could sample those bee hat things. The fully enclosed ones they use when harvesting honey. You also shooting bow so still should be able to shoot

I could do that, dunno where I'd find one though. I googled sonic mosquito repellent devices but they say it don't work. Maybe I going try the natural citronella in my yard.

I've used the citronella. Crushed the leaves and rubbed them on exposed skin.

Take a good bit with you and stick it in your pocket to reapply when it starts wearing off. 15 - 30 minutes in my experience. Better than nothing, though, and at least a scent that they might be familiar with enough to not spook.

Thanks for all the help. Great info guys!

I kept waiting to see if anyone mentioned it, since it's maybe the best repellant ever.  Not sure if the scent will be a problem, but Skin So Soft from Avon is THE BOMB!     It's so good, Avon markets it  as repellant now!

I've used it ever since Scouting in the 70's.  My mom was an Avon rep, so everyone knew SSS was the best repellant.  Not so stinky as Off! and the other chemical repellants.  Now I see they make an UNSCENTED version, too!.

Anyway, that's something you might try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Killer Bug Repellant June 24, 2008

This product is fantastic! We live in Hawaii and at times go into the jungle which has some very mean bugs. We have tried everything under the sun and moon and found this to be the absolute best. Nice thing is, it doesn't have that awful smell that most do, it's not as greasy (who wants to grease up before hiking?). We can apply it and several hours later the product is still effective.

Cedar is a natural mosquito repllent that doesn't alert hogs.  You can get some pure cedar oil for your skin/around the opening of your mask or be like my hunting partner "Crazy Al" and hang a mesh bag of crushed cedar chips (pet bedding) around your neck.

SSS is a great insect repellent, but (the unscented) didn't work for deer hunting. Never tried with hogs, but I'd have to assume the animals might smell something in it that we cant.

Das nutz about the match heads. Wondering about other chemicals in there that get ingested. I tried the citronella leaves tonight and they kinda work. Gotta keep reapplying. Skeeters were out in force biting me thru my mask, ended up rubbing the leaves on my mask too. I'll go buy some cedar and see how that works out next. Thanks for all the suggestions so far.

I forgot to add, no pigs came around so I know citronella works for mosquitos but dunno about working for pig hunting.

I hear garlic oil works so possibly.

It's true. A few of the cadre went over it at Ranger School, BUT as a field expedient insect repellent and only if you're in an area where the diseases from mosquitos are worse than the effects potassium chlorate/phosphorus poisoning (nausea, vomiting, diarreah, abdominal bleeding, convulsions, liver/kidney failure, etc). So unless you're hunting in the Amazon/Mekon Delta, I strongly advise against consuming match heads. It's safer to take sulfur pills (homeopathic acne meds), sold OTC at the drug store.

I wonder if eating garlic or cabbage would work in this light.

Both are high sulfur foods.
Garlic works if you eat LOTS of it. But cabbage might not be so good if it makes you gassy.

I  must report back on the most effective  mosquito repellant I've used.  It's called Thermacell.  Used it twice and not even a bite. I was able to sit still for hours  and shoot a 90 lb  boar. This is in an area where mosquitoes bite even with Off spray.  All the reviews say deer are not spooked by it either. I  don't own stock in the company but I should because it's damn good! The mosquito net idea came in second.  Then the citronella.

Eat bananas.  Nah just kidding.  Citronella seem to work for me.
Plus this thread reminds me of Frank Delima's commercial ad for "Muhi-Us" back in the day.
