I want to have my colt 6830's 16" barrel threaded for a permanent flash hider or muzzle break install, or cut so the device addition doesn't add length and the barrel stays 16".
Does anyone know the best gunsmith in Hawaii to do this? One that could do the necessary recrowning especially if the barrel is cut?
And does anyone know if it is possible for the gunsmith to retune the gas system or if its even necessary if the barrel is cut? I'm just concerned the rifle won't function properly if the device changes pressures especially with a barrel reduction.
Thanks.

As long as you dont go below 13.5" you will be ok.
10.5" Barreled XM177 is a little punchy but tunable.

I've seen John Perreira's work (JHP Arms) , Wayne Takeshita's (Pacific Custom Rifles) work and the results of his work  and they are skilled
If you are looking for one of the better AR gunsmiths it is worth it to send it to http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/xcart/home.php (http://www.whiteoakarmament.com/xcart/home.php) as John Holliger is very experienced with the AR. He is also a President's 100 and distinguished shooter. Not just an AR plumber he is a real gunsmith who is an instructor at an Illinois community college. I've received sight and barrel work and it is not as expensive as one would think given his expertise. I order my service barrels from him and have medaled with the last one.

Thanks guys!

Can I ask what your reason is for wanting to shorten the barrel?
just curious
-
No real substantive reason. Just that I like the minimum 16" barrel for home defense and adding a hider or brake wo/shortening the barrel an amount equal to the length of the device, would make the barrel longer; 2-3" longer.
Some manufacturers treat barrel length differently as far as brakes/hiders go. Like my M4 is 16" from the closed bolt face to the end of the hider (ATF technique), which means the barrel PROPER is about 14". But interestingly, my AR10A1 measured the same way is almost 19", even though armalite markets it as a 16" carbine.
Point is colt and armalite both call the rifles 16" carbines but the armalite is noticeably more unwieldy since they spec their barrel length WITHOUT the hider, and colt specs theirs WITH the hider.
So, I'm not bent on cutting the barrel; if it wouldn't affect operations, I would cut it the amount the hider would add to maintain 16", but its not critical.
What do you think?

I just like to know peoples reasons for their barrel lengths. Maybe yours would be a reason I haven't heard of. Most say the performance differences between 16 and 14.5 are negligible. It's mostly for looks and gives slightly better maneuverability. I like the looks of 14.5 better, I just hate having to decide on a permanent FH.
If it were my Colt, I would not cut the barrel. I'd buy a 14.5 barrel and swap it

+1, I agree with just swapping with a 14.5 barrel. At the same time, make it into a midlength.
-
Sounds like a good idea.
I think I'd just like to leave the length and just add a hider.
But I wouldn't make the hider permanent. I'd have the barrel threaded to accept any standard thread hider. So I could change it if I liked. Or if I wanted to swap it for a brake. So I wouldn't have to decide on a permanent hider.

Come to think of it, isn't that gun 762? You'll definitely want to experiment with different brakes if it is.
