Hi,
Can I buy a rifle on a neighbor island and register it in Honolulu? Better yet, can I buy a rifle on the neighbor island, register it there, and bring it back to Honolulu?
Thank you,

You can buy a rifle on the other islands.....they just have to fax HPD with your purchase...
Nope sorry if you live in HNL you have to register it in HNL

Had a discussion with a friend about this subject. He's working on Molokai. The gist is yes, but you'd have to do your permit to acquire on Molokai and register on Molokai............as well as the future purchases also.........all on the same island. Add to this you'd probably need an address on the other island as well.

The law is specific that you have to register in the county that is your place of business, and if not a business where you are a resident, and if no residency in Hawaii, then your place of sojourn.
"Place of business" could be argued for an employee, but that's not the situation with the OP (unless he forgot to mention that).
My interpretation is, you get the Permit to Acquire from HPD, go to the other island, get the gun, bring it back, and take it to HPD to register. In the meantime, the seller has 72 hours to notify his County PD of the transfer in writing.
