Title: DRUNK DRIVER ON WAY HOME FROM WORK
Post by: vooduchikn on November 22, 2010, 08:06:23 PM
ME: Crusing home, merging onto Nimitz after long weekend at sea...next light Valkenburg toward WAIKS,
HIM: Almost hits me and three other cars after miraculously navigating the freeway.
Me: Slow down and get behind him..wondering if 3 days on a Submarine constitutes me driving badly.
HIM: Right blinker on, goes in left lane, then back to right, then shoulder, then back and forth...overuns light, then tries to back up.
Me: "WTF" Determines it is not me and decides to do something about this situation.
Me: At the light " Hey bro, you need some help?"
HIM: Makes random hand sign out of window..somewhat "shaka...fuck you finger thing"..throws random object out window.
Me: "hell no", not me, time to do something about this.
Him: Pumps breaks and attempts to powerbrake a Toyota Camry. Fail
Him:  Drives to next stoplight in which he forces 2 cars into shoulder. Same hand sign goes up...some other random thing flies from drivers side window.
Me: Calls the cops to get this guy off the road....gets "busy message" from 911 (SERIOUSLY FOLKS?)
Him: Turns right on AOLELE St by the airport (left turn signal on).
Me: Gotta check this one out..got 911 on the phone,  passes plates, car description, and driver descrip....
Him: Misses Pedestrian by pure luck that he swerved cause he is fucked up.
Me: Still on hold with 911 dispatch......
Him: Stops at cross walk and fiddles with something in his car
Me: Getting out to go beat his ass and keep him off road....get clueless bitch on the 911, wants me to spell AOLELE (this is Hawaii right?)
Him: Takes off out of the blue and goes toward Airport
Me: Back in car...still on call with 911..."Officer on the way"
Him...goes all through the airport...(past 2 HPD) and makes it back to AOLELE st.
Me: Still behind him...
Him..runs 70mhp down AOLELE towards Lagoon. Runs a stop sign, almost causes wreck.
Me: Still on phone with dispatch..she is clueless, more interest in details of my car than his...
Him: Runs AOLELE/LAGOON, almost causes wreck and gets in right lane heading towards Waiks.
Me: Still on with dispatch (7+ minutes now).
Him. Takes a precarious right into traffic and almost causes huge wreck.
Me: Told 911, I am done with this bullshit...takes a left
Me: Finds 2 Cops waiting on Nimitz for him in the wrong direction just after the light.
Him: Probably at a bar in china town by this time having damn good time.

Whats wrong with this picture folks? WHERE ARE THE COPS? I saw 1 guy on a motorcycle a mile from this location last week and there were SIX cop cars for one guy speeding on a bike!

When seconds matter...you are shit out of luck. :shake:

I used to routinely have to drive home from work at 0300 and used to call 911 about impaired drivers about 2-3 times a month. I have had them tell me not to follow them (like you, only wanted to be able to "guide" the police to the impaired driver), been put on hold and forgotten, had the call dropped...I could go on and on. Out of all those multiple calls (maybe 25-30+ calls) I only had one instance where a blue and white came into the area looking for the guy I reported. He was going to turn the wrong way on Kahekili (despite telling the dispatcher which direction the impaired driver was going...) when I rolled down my window, flashed my high beams and almost blocked his path with my vehicle (remember, 0300 and literally no other traffic...) to tell him he had to go the "other" way........

And HPD wonders Why they have problems with the general public???

You guys aren't the first to have problems with 911 in trying to report DUI drivers.
Wife and I have had same problems.

FWIW  911 Dispatch people don't get paid very much,  Very HIGH STRESS job,  EVERYTHING is monitored by HPD

So it's a case of you get what you pay for.  A civilian job within HPD.  Maybe better if they used officers who have patrol experience on the road for a few years.

I've been thinking of getting a video camera that mounts on a ball cap and leaving it in the car for "interesting situations".

Saw article in the paper a while back about camera and then lost the story.  Waterproof and mountable almost anywhere.

Found the article:  http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/20101112_Capture_your_moments_to_remember.html (http://www.staradvertiser.com/sports/20101112_Capture_your_moments_to_remember.html)

Maybe a little $$,  I suppose there are similar small video cameras that are cheaper and serves the purpose as well.
If anyone finds one let us know.

Another Update:  Found this one at Natchezs for those of you with good eyes:  http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentId=productSearch&searchItem=ikam (http://www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentId=productSearch&searchItem=ikam)

You know, thinking how clueless dispatch was, I would have just said told them "HOLY MOTHERF&@*(@#!!!!! I think he just ran over someone on (insert street name here)!!!! I swear he just killed someone and now he's running, Omg, Omg, Omg!!!"

Then hang up. I bet you dispatch will get a Blue and White in your area super fast. If they ask you what happened, just say "My mistake, it was a plastic bag. It was dark, but from where I was, it appeared to have been a person. Wow, after you thought someone DIED, you then took me seriously..."

Just saying, if dispatch is going to act like it's no biggy that someone is speeding and driving drunk, I'd give them something to worry about... After all, would you rather them rush down and catch the guy over "exaggerated" circumstances. Or he actually hitting someone and killing them, thus making your 911 call "true"...

"Sir, we are aware your following a drunk driver, who may likely kill someone. However, we need to know if your utilizing a hands free device at this time."

Not to knock the joke out of the air, but there's an exemption in the law for calling 911.

FWIW,  About 911 Operators,

I was discussing this with the Wife.

She works for the City and personally knew 2 people who did work there.

It is one of the Lowest paid jobs, starts at SR-10(or close to it)

   One year OJT.

HPD does not support 911 operator if it goes to court.  And HPD supposedly  "trained" them.

Very High turnover in that system.   Sort of an entry way into the "system" because of high turnover.

We get what we pay for, so much for the HPD way of doing things.

According to the Wife, if there is any Blame here, it is in HPD's lap.  It's their system, their training and their lack of support.

Very BAD or little Morale in there.

Yes, she was offered a job there when she joined the City "family"  She chose to work elsewhere.
