Title: Get off the bench!
Post by: zippz on June 01, 2013, 05:55:49 PM
Why do almost all the rifle shooters only shoot from the bench at Koko Head?  I could see that if you are handicapped or have a purpose built benchrest rifle.  But most people have combat, tactical and precision rifles that are made to be shot off the bench.  I guess in combat there is a small chance you would shoot from a bench, like out an apartment window.  But most of the time you would be shooting from the prone or standing.  And that's the point of having tacticool stuff, to be military like.

Just seems like people are limiting themselves on what they could and should do.

Exactly! Use the bench to sight in your new gun, sight in a new optic, etc. but learning how to show standing or kneeling is very important! Now, I will shoot at a bench if I am going to be shooting a lot because I have bad knees. I still practice kneeling because I have to qualify from a kneeling position. I think almost anyone can be a great shot from the bench...standing or kneeling will separate the men from the boys as the saying goes.

You can still load up the rifle and practice going from the Alert to firing.  Getting that first round out and on target quickly is real important.

That's why I bring my mats to koko head . Lay down with the 338lm and blow up the skirts of the boys on the bench  .

Things that I've practiced at the rifle range are:
1.  Shooting from different positions Standing, sitting, kneeling, prone
2.  Using the vertical beams for support, ie window/doorway/corner
3.  Left my rifle on the line, did some sprints in the parking lot, returned and practiced controlling my breathing and shooting.
4.  Firing from the alert position
5.  Setup multiple target frames and practiced transitioning between them.  Steel targets too.
6.  Going prone from the standing position
7.  Reload drills

See! This is the shit people should be doing.  Never waste a training opportunity; too many people just load their shit, shoot, and never work anything fundamental to their shooting ability.

I use the benches for cleaning
If we get rid of the benches I think there could be more shooting points - moot point right now as there are less shooters coming out to Kokohead.

I shoot from the bench in frustration of not being able to do a bayonet charge with my Mosin to the 100 yard target.

You could do that at home, don't need a range and lno laws against it.  Just make sure your neighbors don't see you.

I'm jealous if you've got 100 yards to run at home.

I wish I had a place that big.  :(

True dat. If I had that much land, I'd build my own private range.

This!

I always make a point to shoot standing and kneeling when I go rifle side. It's funny though, I always catch people looking at me like I'm doing something illegal......I just laugh and smile back.  ;D

That's all I shoot - from 3 positions. I get the same stares with a sweater, coat, glove and sling. I don't care as I am still chasing those pesky leg points.
Frankly, who cares? This is a free country and people can shoot from whatever position - bench or not with their guns as they please.
Not everyone is "training" or trying to live out a fantasy of being a COD operator; some people like to just shoot
As long as they do it in a safe manner I pay attention to trying to consistently place shots in the X. That's all that matters when I shoot.

Only humbug part of shooting standing/kneeling is picking up the brass after.  Don't really want to attach brass catcher to gun. But yeah, shooting from the bench gets boring real fast. More of a challenge when you shoot standing.
