Title: Rifle/Pistol Gongs
Post by: JGreen on June 17, 2013, 02:11:33 PM

Anybody making or selling Rifle gongs? If so I sure would like to know where I can get a couple or better yet where I can get  the AR500 rated steel to make gongs myself.
Also would like to know what is or would be allowable at kokohead and any rules that would apply to them. Thanks Aloha.

Find thetargetman_llc on Ebay.  BigKahuna808 pointed me that way.

Also, to my understanding, at Koko Head you can use AR500 steel no closer than 50 yards for rimfire, and no closer than 100 yards for centerfire.

targetmanllc on ebay---free shipping
quality targets on ebay---free shipping
shootsteel.com---reasonable shipping
I've bought several plates form each of these sellers and all arrived within 2-4 days as pictured and none have taken any permanent damage from 22lr up to 7.62x54.

No real point in doing it yourself when online sellers have reasonable pricing for quality work. Unless of course you have the means to properly cut AR500 steel without compromising its strength.

How does thetargetman_llc's gongs hold up against 7.62x54r?

The ones I set up at 100 yards are all 3/8" and the 54r barely leaves any dent in the steel, there is a slight ring where the rounds impact. Once i'm finished painting the gongs after each range trip I can't feel the dents any more. The only rounds that do any irreparable damage are those that strike the very edge and glance off, taking some metal with them. If you want to be absolutely sure your plates will live forever I'd go for the 1/2" plate, though I don't have any in that thickness to comment on.

I just made a 5 foot tall frame according to the standard khsc website specs. If you don't miss too much wood frames last a while, especially if your shooting .223/5.56 or smaller. With .30 cal rounds the shrapnel usually eats the wood away after 4 or 5 trips, duct tape can extend the life quite a bit though.

Is there a new regulation relative of usage of metal gong at kokohead?

as long as gongs are free swinging, you can use them
.22lr only at 50 yds
any caliber at 100 yds

Great. Anyone got a pic of their setup. Can your gong be attached with chain on the metal side pole or only wood pole. Any recommended gong size. Is the swing flag type prohibited. I never saw anyone use the swinging except the .22 side.  Just want to make sure. I was looking at target man site. Anyone sell locally? Thanks

forgot to add
on the weekends, you can shoot the 25 yard targets on the far right with metal swingers if you are using black powder

Locally I saw some at Security Equipment. I ordered mine prior to Security Equipment carrying it from shootsteel.com and had 6 plates ranging from 3/8 -1/2 inch thick and 3" to a 6x8 and they sent it in a flat rate USPS box.

I've seen people with metal leg stands, chain, and gong at 100 yards. No problems for them.

This is my setup for 100 yards. AR500 1/2" steel with partial steel legs. Gong from targetmanllc on Ebay.

This is what it looks like when you don't protect the legs. This is after 2 or 3 days.

Will this fly at koko head? I like that L bracket idea to protect the wood surrounding the targets. I'll have to take that idea.

The only requirement is "free swinging"

Shoot my wire may be a little too rigid to be considered free swinging. I just wrapped them because I had some extra number 6 laying around

Well the loops at the bottom look like they allow the gongs to swing

I just went outside and checked it out. The 4" and 5" gongs swing freely but the 3" gong, the holes that it swings on are too small for the 6awg wire.
