I'll be the first to admit that I'm a long time shooter, but fairly new hunter. I only have been out a few times with a friend who showed me the ropes, tagging along with him, while he took the shot and then I'd help him clean out the pig and hump it out of there.
He has since moved off island, and I would like to start going out again and gaining experience myself. The problem is I don't have an adequate vehicle for hunting, I drive a mazda3... I do have access to a large pick up, but it is only a 2wd, and from what people have been telling me, a 4wd is needed or heavily recommended.
And yes, before anyone asks, I have my hunters ed certificate, and current tag.
Are there any hunting trails or spots on Oahu that is suitable for a 2wd truck? This would be for hunting with a rifle, without dogs.
-
Kuaokala game management area is accessible by truck without 4wd, sometimes with 2wd, but if it rains your shit out of luck. It's a dirt road, so once it rains it gets slick. I've took my truck up though. Expect a lot of walking though.
Makua/keaau hunting area is another area you can check out.
Poamoho needs 4wd.
Not sure what hunting areas you would need 4wd to access here.
What areas they been telling you about?
-
I know the feeling. You will need to get a 2nd vehicle.
Just get a reliable used one since it going get beaten up.
Already had a fight with a friend when he put a dead boar
In the back of my 2wd. Blood leaking everywhere because
He wasn't prepared. Then having to smell like sh*t for a few weeks
-
Solution:
Rent a cheap jeep for a day.
Buy a roll of plastic sheet, line cargo area so the rental folks dont think you are a hitman when you return it.
Kill something
Profit!!!
Thats what I do when I like go hunt... my volkwagen golf isnt the most practical offroad vehicle...

Remember when we went sliding backwards in the mud in the 2wd truck?
-
Ah, the old 2leg drive is still the most reliable way to travel up and down the mountain!
-
Can we organize a 2aHawaii field trip out to Kuaokala I like to see where / how etc. have 4WD and permit just no knowledge of the area. That's by the golf ball eh?
-
Yup that's by the golf ball. I'm down. Let me know when.
-
PM sent. sworbeyegib my understanding is there are 2WD accessible parts of Kuaokala. At least there will be 2 vehicles if we go same time. And as long as you have Hunting permit good to go, no need hiking permit for access.
and of course now that I look at my hunting permit it freaking expired June 30 so have to renew. doing it next!
so when we going!
-
Count me in !
If you guys got room. :D
-
I'm down!
-
License renewed! You guys got week day availability? At least for initial recon trip looksee? aieahound we got plenty space! (I no more a/c though haha)(freaking jeep)
-
Unfortunately I work a mon-fri 8-5 job now, so its weekends or bust for me nowadays.
-
License renewed !
-
I gotta get a replacement hunters ed card Friday, then a new permit thing same day then I should be good to go.
Couple notes.
My truck not 4wd. I've been up there before though and kinda know my way around.
When we checking in, no one is allowed to ride in back of vehicles up to top.
One license can get multiple vehicles in. It used to be 5 vehicles per pass. Not sure if that changed. Could double check.
Finally, not sure if they let people up during the weekdays, because its not a hunting day. Hunting only happens on weekends.
Just a few things to think about.
-
Oh one more thing. You don't need 4wd. You can make it to the campsite with 2wd. However there are many side trails that you can take that need 4wd. If you stay on the main trail 2wd is fine.
-
Right on :) 4 weekends to choose from so far then. Let's all exchange phone numbers at this point and take it from there. So we can park at the campsite then hoof it a bit. aieahound I seen some 4wd nissans, if you trade for same color da kine will not even notice! ;)
-
Take pics gentlemen!

I have a 2WD Nissan X-Terra... "Old School Style" - Couple layers of old towels, canvas and throw-um on da hood!
-
Midori,
Just get your butt off the couch and come with us ! :shaka:
-
Ha! We ain't gonna' get squat the first time out, probably making too much noise cracking jokes stopping for water break every couple mins then settling for target practice or something ;)
Eh 'hound we go this weekend just to look around at least find out how to get in / out of there! Should be a good field trip for the keiki, take pics and stuff. Could hang out at Yokes after to go in the water? Backtrack to Makaha? More of a road trip thing.

See that time to time people coming down from da' heiau (although not a hunting area) although way less now a days.
-
I no mo hunters Ed
-
can still go though!
-
Sorry guys don't think I'm available this weekend but a road trip sounds fun. You also don't have to go to the end to hunt. You can pull over along the way and hunt. There are also numerous hiking trails so just need to be aware of that. Not hard to get lost, just gotta pay attention cause there are signs on the main road to follow.
Not this weekend, but if there is another weekend we go, someone can jump in with me. Sorry only got space for 1 additional person.
-
Get one campsite? Can go camping too?

Well, we're down to the next 3 weekends to make July happen! I like go look see now but the wife watching the dang tennis. Oh well, printing off topo maps.
-
Maybe should make a new thread, but we should plan a date. How about next weekend? I'm available. All in favor?!?!
Someone can also jump in with me.
Also when I went to hunters ed office, they had a handout for kuaokala. According to that paper its suppose to be open daily. I asked the lady, because you only suppose to hunt on weekends and state holidays and she had to verify with someone else. Only thing they told me was to call and verify, cause they wasn't sure when was the last time it got updated. I grabbed a few extra, but there's no official state markings or anything on it so not sure if it can be used as any leverage.

bass monkey - next weekend, IN!
Drove up to the trailhead today but it was raining and super muddy once there. The wife unit vetoed going in any further and good thing too as I was spinning tires just trying to get out of the drainage channel (was going to park off to the side and hike a bit but thought if another vehicle needed to turn around I'd be in the way). So much for the all terrains they just loaded up immediately and turned into slicks. Plus no idea what the trail was like so I agreed turn around and go beach instead lol :) Kuaokala Access Road was blocked off entirely.
-
Where's the access road? When you get to the top, you turn right. Then there's a second gate, sometimes open sometimes closed. Follow that a make a right. Did you go down that big blind turn? Parked by the metal pipes. Or did you stay on the top by that turn around area by the metal containers?
-
Went as far in as possible - the big parking lot with the container up top. The Access road was to the left and chained off. The trail down to the right was open so drove down there until it turned to dirt/mud then turned around. I wanted to hike in to see more but da kine is just not into this kinda' stuff so that was the end. She had more fun taking pics on the way down and of course at the beach.
-
From the parking lot:
To left to Access Road, chained off.
Drop down to right, the trail
-
A CJ with mudders came zooming down and turned down the road to the trail and was gone. Yeah I was jealous! :D
-
That access road to the left is never open to us regulars. Gotta drop down to the right, exactly where you was. Welcome to your taste of kuaokala.
-
sworbeyegib you in for this Sat? Check the Events board! You can hitch ride with me (+ aieahound & keiki if they going too).
please let it be dry this weekend!
-
Damn, I'll have to check. Usually I'm off on the weekends, but the construction crew working in our building right now may be working thru the weekend, and I may have to stick around if they don't get around to pouring their cement tomorrow.
I'm the building manager, so I kinda gotta be here for this. I'll let yall know if I can make it, I really hope I can.

That's the one, down and to the right that leads to the trails and camp grounds.the main trail road is not to bad,but when it's raining the main road does get a little slippery even for 4 wheel drive. I wouldn't mind going up there to cruz and meet some of you fine forum members but I don't think I can make it this weekend. If its raining just remember when in doubt throttle out

I was afraid you'd say that (re: rain / mud). Man, this is either a great idea or disaster in the making! That tire pic is after driving up the road and into the loose gravel lot up top so most of the mud came off. It was like sliding through hot fudge down there = zero response to inputs. But without da kine with me I can step on it (and probably get into even more trouble haha). Wouldn't want to try it w/o another way out though. Like a tow vehicle! haha
Update: Ok! Now that we got the recon out of the way is actual hunting next? :D
