Sorry I know I'm blasting this site with so many questions. Anyways I NEED to pick one up by the end of the month cause I have to go back to register my handguns. I want a cheap shotgun that would be for home defense but also just good enough for play around skeet and target shooting. Something just all around and doesn't have to be the best. Can those mix? I know nothing about shotguns or guns in general but I think I want a 12 gauge. My wife might be shooting this too if she can handle, she's 5' 1". I'm thinking a semi would be better than a pump in my case? Budget is around $500 give or take a couple hundred. It can be used too. Or what about really cheap short ones with the handle for home defense and the regular length ones for skeet/target?

There is a combo-barrel Mossberg 500 that comes with a shorter barrel for HD and a longer one for skeet. Last time I saw one was at OGC last year at about the $400 price range.

Is there still a 5 ammo limit at Kokohead for shotguns? I noticed on Mossberg's site they have 5 and 8 shot styles.
I think I my wife will have to try out the pump style first to see if she can do it. But besides that for home defense would you rather have pump or semi? Do people use pump for skeet shooting?

5 is the limit,1@ trap(unless your in the club shooting doubles),2@ skeet
I like my 870 it's got a 27" barrel,I shoot trap&skeet just change my chokes.I have something else for home defense

I would recommend a saiga, but he specifically stated $500 price range.

Get yourself a nice Remington 870 police magnum or a 500/ 590 mossberg pump. If you want some thing a little more exotic benelli makes a nova tactical

If you do try a pump, by all means make sure your wife can cycle it with shells, not just empty.
There can be a huge difference in effort to rack the slide with live ammo.
A semi-auto is a better bet for the ladies, IMHO, as slide operation in a stress situation may become impossible. Any girl can rack the bolt for the first round.
Cost for a semi is an issue of course.

Cheap means Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500/590.
I'm short so the length of pull on those is a PITA. It's OK if I go with a shorter stock, but if you are using, then I'd suggest a collapsable which means now you want the 870 as there are a million parts for that thing. The problem is there will be more felt recoil with that versus a semi. Trouble is a semi is nowhere near as cheap as a pump.
It's all about give and take.

I have a Mossberg 500 but I'd get a Remington 870.......
The fit and finish has to go to the 870......
870's also have more options when it comes to mag extentions, quad rails and bullpup conversions.....
I got the Mossberg cause it was cheaper...... :thumbsup:

He's right about that. I'm a big round guy I can cycle a 12 gauge no issues. But recoil and pumping may be difficult for smaller women. 20 guage may be eaiser for them. In a home defence situation engaged someone @15 feet wether 12 or 20 is gonna do severe damage.

Those being the key words...I'd have to second Q's suggestion of the Maverick 88. Sports Authority has them for under $200 for either the 18" Security or 28" Field models.

I have a 590a1...was not impressed with a freinds 860 'tactical'....just get a 500 and throw a youth stock on it.

Try and get ahold of a Winchester 1300. Can't go wrong just may not be easy to find on island. I have two one in 12 the other in 20 love them both.

How much do rem 11-87 and mos 930 go for these days?

We went to Sports Authority tonight and had my wife try out a couple pump actions. Strength wise she could do the pump no problem as it was easy to pull back. The problem was that she couldn't reach it properly and her arm was too extended out. I think a semi-auto would be best. I did see a nice Beretta semi but I'm not sure what model it was. I'm going to look at other stores tomorrow.

The 20-gauge shotgun, particularly in the gas-operated semiautomatic version, seems to be one of the best-kept secrets in the firearms world. About the only thing it's not very good for anymore, since heavy lead shot was legally forbidden for waterfowl hunting, is the harvesting of high-flying ducks and geese. In big bear country, I might also prefer the bigger slugs of a 12-gauge.
The 20-gauge will always "kick" less than the 12, and it will handle better and faster on quick-moving upland birds. With a buckshot load, the standard 20-gauge shell will fire 20 pellets of #3 buckshot (approximately .25 caliber), which will penetrate to about the same depth at about the same pattern width as the standard 12-gauge "urban load" of #4 buckshot, which comprises 27 pellets (about .23 caliber). If you are planning on using the gun for skeet/trap, id highly recommend a Remington 870 or the Weatherby with a 28" barrel. These two are available at Sports Authority for around $400. Then, at your discretion, you can pick up the home defense barrel of your choice at a later date. With that being said....
I shoot Trap/Skeet every Sunday. If you are interested in having a feel for a particular shotgun, I have an 870/28" barrel, 590/18" barrel, and a 930JM Pro semi/24" barrel that I could bring out for you and your wife to try. All you'd have to do is provide the #8 ammo. PM me if you are interested and we can set something up.

I had a Knoxx collapsible on my Mossy 500 and the cheekweld was uncomfortable with the bead sight. ( cheek slap ) Had to get a heads up reflex sight.
One consideration about collapsible stocks is the straight line cheek weld vs. the drop down of a standard stock. There are collapsible's with the slanted tube though.
Just a consideration if you're looking into it.
The recoil reducing effect of the knoxx is awesome through.
A beretta semi-auto is what I want. Barrel swaps are harder though. Mossberg/Maverick barrel swaps are super easy.

One way I got around the long length of pull on the 870 was taking off the factory butt pad and slipping on a limb saver that I found at Sports Authority. The permanent solution I had was to replace the stock with the Magpul one.

That Magpul stock is pretty sweet. For those who don't want the straight collapsible buttstock, Mesa Tactical also makes a fixed pistol grip stock with a super short LOP. It's called the Urbino stock, and I'm anxiously awaiting the rollout of Urbino stocks for Mossberg 930s, which is supposed to be sometime next month. :shake:

Picked this up. Kinda way over my budget but it was the most comfortable for my wife. We tried out all kinds but the pistol grip helped her hold and control it much better.

I would change that stock out to a youth stock or one made for armor. I have an 870 with a youth speedfeed stock.
