Since there has been interest in going up to Kuaokala game management area and checking out the hunting and camping area, I figure make a thread so we can all choose an appropriate date and get the ball rolling.
I would recommend a truck or suv, 2wd or 4wd with ground clearance. It's like driving a rocky dirt road. And when it gets wet it gets slick.
What is needed: Since we have to access through the military base we will need the following:
A full tank of gas, especially if we are up there all day. There are so many trails you could literally drive till you run out of gas.
Valid and current hunting, camping or hiking permit.
Current vehicle registration
Possibly insurance card. They ask every so often.
Government issued identification
Also, no one can ride in back of truck on the way to the top, they don't allow it. Once we get into the GMA I assume its ok, but I personally am not comfortable with that so no one in back of my truck. You can all make your own choices.
Anywho I figure we can go up, check it out, make a family day, hopefully make it to the campsite and bar b q, lots of nice scenic points to take pictures, see what its like, great areas to hunt in the future. Etc, etc.
Just kinda throwing it out there as a brainstorming idea. Let me know who's interested. I know aiea78 is down and possibly team midori, but its open to anyone.

So I would need to get some kind of permit? I guess a hiking or camping one? I hope I get my car back by then...
-
If you have your hunting license that works too.
-
I no more. Where do u get a "hiking" permit from?

I would love to go and *MIGHT* be able to go this Saturday if I can get out of my personal obligations. Is this a whole day thing?
l have a 2WD mini SUV - is this a suitable vehicle?
Or can I catch a ride with someone?
-
Thanks! It says 10 working days for processing. Anyone have experience with how long it takes?
-
Count me in for sat 7/13, looks like you need only one person to apply, you just need to let them know number of people and up to 5 vehicles. I have a 4x4, 3 people (Me, my son, and brother) Lmk I'lll pm you my info :shaka:
-
/shrugs
Seems like only one person has to have a hunting or hiking permit and the rest in the vehicle are guests.
Ren, if it rains like today then I don't think a 2WD is going to make it. Just too much mud.
-
I would like to go if I can ride up there with someone too.
Maybe we can get a headcount and just submit one hiking permit request once we know how many people (without hunting licenses) and trucks will be going up there?
-
Just talk to DLNR take two day to process if your email them, then they will mail you the pass other 2 days or less if mail service is on time. Im putting in application for July 17 that a Wednesday. Me and my son just going to hike see it first, than on July 27,28 camping. PM me for DLNR email adress or who want to join me on July 17 :shaka:

Ok then, are we doing this tomorrow or Sunday?
Original plan is Sat. and is a go far as I know.
Drizzling mauka all day today, more than likely super wet up there so I expect a muddy mess. Good for piggies but prediction: more vehicle recovery than hiking around.
-
Hi guys, sorry I cannot make it tomorrow. Have to take care of the little guy. Have a great time!

So are you guys hunting or just checking it out? Are you guys going Saturday or Sunday? Can I catch a ride with someone? Lmk

Can a dual sport motorcycle make it up there? lol.

Great question! And I don't see why not but with same caveat against 2WD if rainy. But not sure about base rules so best to call ahead or if riding out there just go to the guard station and have them check their rule book (which they whipped out on us too, initially to deny entry).

what they try to deny you for?
-
Not having "two permits" - hiking + hunting. SSGT called down, both flipping through rule book, still denied, more phone calls made, I started to mention to look in log book and they'd see my entrance just last week with only the hunting license but finally SSGT gave go ahead, "I'll just do what everyone else had been doing".
Not mean to give them a hard time at all, I know the staff changes all the time and they have a sh#t ton of rules to keep track of and deference to no access is safest course until straightened out.
For all I know they needed time to run our plates, get clear video, do speech and facial recognition, who knows what ;)
That afternoon we would pass a lot of different 4WD coming in on our way out so we weren't the only visitors / hunters.
