Title: Which is/are your favorite LGS and why?
Post by: passivekinetic on July 13, 2013, 05:59:58 PM
So instead of saying bad things about any LGS here (I am sure we have all had various experiences) perhaps it is better if I just ask which LGS have you had good experience with?

There's a poll somewhere.  Overall I like OGC for the prices.

WGS in Hawaii Kai for their down to earth service, reloading inventory and their proximity to the range
OGC Tactical for their service, prices and inventory
Young Guns for service, reloading supplies and other misc. stuff
SEC for reloading inventory

OGC for prices especially on guns.
Young Guns for Powder and primer inventory
Security Equipment corp for powders and customer service. I don't like how they only sell >10rd mags only to police though. But that their prerogative though.             ...Why would cops need 25 rd 10/22 mags?
Windward Gun Shop for when I am desperate for powder and will pay really high prices.

X-Ring is good but doesn't usually have anything I want. The $659 lower receivers turned me off.

KGS is not on my list. That guy is not getting any of my money. I went there twice and didn't feel welcome.

X-ring is my favorite. Amazing customer service, extremely helpful (even if you don't wind up buying something) and will always answer your questions. I am confused about price, because I made a purchase from OGC and if I would of shopped around, I could have saved about 150 if I went to X-ring. That is just my opinion.

To be fair, I haven't been to KGS and I have purchased stuff from Young Guns and Honolulu...

OGC, X-Ring, SEC, Honolulu Firearms, Young guns, WGS. Don't care for KGS and Gunsource.
My rating isn't price driven, customer service and inventory is my determining factors.

I'm glad I asked. There were a few other LGS that I did not even know about!

I will shop around.

Related question:

How much percentage should we expect for prices here versus the mainland, to pay that "paradise tax"?

I don't mind supporting local (and in fact I always try to) unless the prices are just too ridiculous, and I factor in the transportation and convenience of getting stuff here (not just firearms, anything else).

I've been to NC 3 times in the past 6 months.  Each time, I've gone to different ranges, gun shops, and sporting good retailers.  Here are my observations...

We on Oahu are getting more ammo delivered than NC gun shops.  I think it has to do with Hawaii LGS always needing to order way in advance to keep inventory flowing due to the distance and cost of shipping.  So HI retailers' orders were placed ahead of the mainland stores when the craziness started.  The mainland stores were used to getting deliveries in a few days, so they didn't have to routinely order large quantities.

We are getting better prices here for both guns and ammo than the mainland stores I visited.  Again, with low inventory and peak demand, the stores all raised their prices.  HI stores are getting their inventory now, but the mainland stores are still waiting their turn, particularly for .45ACP, 9MM, and .22LR.

Many of the shops also have public shooting ranges.  They are having to hold back ammo for range members & other customers or risk having a bunch of empty range lanes.

I recently bought a Sig P226 MK25 9MM at OGC for $949.  Bass Pro Shop in Concord, NC, and Shooter's Express in Gastonia, NC, both had the same model for over $1,100.  I know they have the standard 15 round mags, and mine has the 10 rounders, but both capacity mags come from the factory that way..  That should not increase the cost for lower cap mags.

I've taken my own ammo to NC just to make sure I have some.  Really, it's hit or miss there (no pun intended).  Inventory is coming back, but ammo, IMHO, seems to be relatively more plentiful and cheaper in Hawaii than the places I was visiting in NC and SC.

This is purely anecdotal.  Hope that helps.

Honolulu Firearms (New Owners), OGC, Security Equipment, X-Ring, WGS, Young Guns, EXCELLENT customer service & I keep going back to these stores to spread my money around to support everyone. 2 stores I been to & will never go back to ever. Made me feel like i wasnt welcomed & didn't want want my business, gave me attitude & i hardly asked any questions. I don't wanna mention their names but I think some of you already know based on their reviews which is true like everyone says.

Just to add,
WGS has high prices on powder right now, but...
I really like their customer service and like those guys. A wealth of knowledge there and they freely share. The older guy there, I don't know his name, installed, aligned, and boresighted my friend's scope free of charge.

WGS. Henry always has stuff i dont. Always makes me laugh.
HGC. Good deals lately. My old friends work thier now. I will be stopping by more to harass them.
DCT. Nice people. Always getting free snacks.

Daniel @ KGS was cool to me when he did my FFL.  He's intense but overall he's alright.  The only BAD experience I've ever had was Magnum but since he's in the Clink I'd go back and give them another chance.

Visited Young Guns, OGC, X-Ring, and Honolulu Firearms & Range when I was deciding to purchase an AR.  I decided on X-Ring to build me one in 7.62 and 'til this day I am still  "stoked".

Going to X-Ring is very convenient for me. Great Customer Service.  Including the AR, I also purchased a bolt-action rifle and a 9mm pistol all within one-year from them.

I still visit YG & OGC when I'm in the area. They are some great bunch of guys there too, but I'm never going back to HF&R.

#1 - X-Ring
#2 - YG & OGC (Tie)

I shop at almost every gun shop on the island.

I buy most of my ammo from SEC and OGC.

I buy/ have bought guns from every single gun shop on island.

I enjoy hanging out and talking with the staff at  X-Ring, SEC, OGC, & Gunsource.

I buy most of my parts at X-Ring.

Most of the gun shops have a great staff and pretty good prices.

There is intense as in taking your job seriously; then there is intense as in being an intense D-bag know it all, condescending potential customers.

Like I said, understandable that it takes a certain mindset to be a LGS owner, and that you have to deal with occasional tards, sometimes more often than not; but treating almost EVERYONE like they have no idea what they are talking about, or that they are stupid for inquiring on certain subjects, will definitely send customers elsewhere.

I guess its a good thing, as I made an effort to go somewhere else, which is how I found out about OGC and decided to make the commute there to get my ammo, and continue to do so to this day.  :shaka:

+1. I totally agree with you. Had a bad experience myself @ KGS. I was asking questions about piston ARs and he went off on why I wanted one. Saying that people like me does not know enough about guns to make a good decision, not knowing that I own couple of each type, configured in all sort of setups. Then he had the nerve to try to sale me one of his piston ARs. When I told him why would I buy a piston AR now, after his lecture. He got all bent out of shape.

These are my picks
OGC for prices and inventory
Young Guns for prices (when they decided to put guns on sale)
SEC for consignment firearms
Gunsource for discounts (if you talk to Tony long enough, Lol)

I've never been in X-ring but I be going there soon.  :shaka:

:-)  Apparently that's his pet peeve.  While I was there he went off on some guy who asked the difference between GI and Piston and which is better.

I've never been to KGS, but I really appreciate that he posts his inventory online. It's great to be able to know what's in stock before having to drive out there.
I think that for prices, I've yet to see someone come close to Danger Close Tactical. Unfortunately, he doesn't have a huge inventory. But I would definitely suggest taking a look, and like KGS, he has his inventory posted online.
I have no complaints about customer service from OGC, SEC, WGS, X-Ring, Young Guns, Honolulu Firearms... all have been very helpful, welcoming, and knowledgeable. There has only been one store that I've visited and I didn't like the CS, so I haven't returned.
Same with inventory: OGC, SEC, X-Ring, YG & Honolulu Firearms all have a large number of different firearms and supplies. I buy my ammo almost exclusively from OGC and SEC (and Sports Authoritah, when in stock) but mainly because I live and work in town.

OP, as to your follow-up question, I think it's hit or miss. Moosed got a great deal on his Sig, but I could save $300/each by buying my HK P30 & HK45 online (and that's after shipping + FFL fee). It's a matter of shopping around. Even if I might not buy the actual firearm locally, the money I save on the hardware goes to an LGS when I need an extra mag, or get an accessory, or for more ammo. That way I don't feel as if I'm screwing the LGS out of sales, but am also not screwing myself over by paying a 35% markup just to buy the firearm locally.

There are not many LGS on the Big Island. But if you're ever in Hilo or Kona check out

Steubs Guns and Ammo: Good selection at great prices. Bought my Glock 19 gen 4 at $599 and my Beretta 92fs inox at $679 their website: http://www.hiloguns.com (http://www.hiloguns.com)

North Pacific Firearms: Are a Sig Sauer dealer and mostly have those in stock their prices are fair as well i.e Glock gen 3's at 550

Ive have only been to two Kona gun stores

Kona Guns and Ammo: Have a massive selection with fair prices bought my px4 storm .40 S&W at $556 their website: http://www.konaguns.com/index.html (http://www.konaguns.com/index.html)

Blue Water Hunter: Nice selection but this is by far the most over priced handguns I've seen on the big island i.e Glock 22 Gen 3 at $650

Have a great week fellow 2aHawaii

ogc doesn't always have the best prices, especially for HK stuff.  Not nearly anywhere near as bad as xring though which has got to have the most $$$ for guns I've ever seen!  they have selection in stock though so if you gotta have something and got the cash, why not go ahead and splurge on it.

Anything in Hawaii cost more when you have shipping involved.

SOME retailers and wholesalers will only ship handguns by red label ups or fedex next day.  And its their policy. Sucks

OGC-Go there 99 percent of the time. Happy with the prices, granted I don't have money for anything. Happy with the CS, though the first time I was down there with a friend the guy asked if I needed help like 6 times while I was waiting on said friend. Another time, first time buying a gun guy kept telling me to buy cases of ammo because they were cheeper..well he told me to do that about four times until I had to be somewhat more assertive and tell him I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR A CASE RIGHT NOW! Not really things to complain about, but felt like typing something.

KGS-Have gone only once, seemed like a fine person to me.

The shop near KHSC..it's open on sundays.

Sorry for the mis information but yeah they are by the Tesoro gas station on a steep hill. I'm from hilo and don't really know my way around Kona very well. I didn't even know they had a website and looks like they've adjusted their prices. Still more expensive than Steubs in Hilo i.e a Beretta 92fs for $619 vs. the $675 @ Blue water hunter outdoors

OGC for inventory and knowledge.  They stock things that no one else seems to and know their stuff. Prices are fair.

WGS for reloading supplies, ammo and cleaning supplies.   Both Joe and Henry are great guys and very helpful and patient.

Security for unusual ammo and a cool gun here and there.  Found some very cool consignments there.

Young Guns for cleaning supplies

Honolulu Firearms for the range

I had a bad experience with him the first time I went into his shop.  Similar to what others have had.  When I wanted a savage .22lr boltgun he was the only place on the island that had them in stock.  I really didnt want to go back because of the first impression that I had, but I was like,  what the hell, ill give it one more try.

Took the drive out there from leeward, went up the stairs, and what do you know, he was very nice to deal with.  Asked a few questions about the rifle, he handed it over for me to inspect without any pestering or condescending comments, then he gave me a good deal..... he even threw in 3 or 4 boxes of match ammo for me to try out.

I must have gone there on a good day or something.

When he's on his meds, he's tolerable.

WGS, KGS, Magnum, OGC, SEC. YG.. I've been to these gun shops more then a few time and got excellent services. The more newer ones I haven't visited yet except xrings, I've only been to xrings twice but they are pretty friendly!...

X-Ring is good but doesn't usually have anything I want. The $659 lower receivers turned me off.

What lower was that?

I know during the craziness someone had to buy some lowers off GB
And paid dearly.

I've acquired firearms from OGC, YG, TGS, WGS, X-Ring, and KGS.  Every shop has good guys there.  KGS has gotten a little intense but he's never offended me.  But I don't get easily offended.  I think I've gotten deals on all my purchases. Service is best at X-Ring in my opinion.  But I like them all.

X-ring due to customer service. Dex and Brian are helpful, don't come across as know it alls, if there's something they're not sure of, they don't hesitate to tell you they're not sure and will find out for you..  Fair prices and  also eye candy haha!

Young Guns and Security equipment (from whom I dealt with) also has a friendly staff and fair prices..
Honolulu Firearms? ( old Magnum) i had a pleasant experience there as well..

If it came down to it I'd much rather pay a little more at one of these shops vs even a cheaper price somewhere that comes off as know it alls and treat you in a condescending manner... granted, its sad that a shop could give that image from possibly just one or a couple of bad apples if that's the case...

Blue water hunter up by costco in kona sells guns? Wow gotta check that out next time I'm in Kona. I've only stopped there a few times to get spearfishing gear while diving in Kona, but never really looked around.

[edit]

Haha just checked online, blue water hunter and blue water hunter outdoors are two different stores

Blue water hunter and blue water outdoors is the same store they just have different websites.

I am honestly not a fan of any of the local gun shops on the big island... Every time I walk into one I feel like I am getting screwed, probably why I never buy anything except ammo and the only reason I do that is sports authority which sadly has the best ammo prices, hasn't had anything new for damn near 9 months and I have no other choice! I suspect the weasely guy that works there just buys it all for himself because I go in there and check weekly and its like they just have a picture tacked up where the ammo is because it never changes.  The prices are usually just outrageous at the LGS. Once in a while there are decent prices on some items. I did buy some Gen 3 Pmags at blue water hunter for 15 bucks each which, while not a steal I thought it was at least competitive and reasonable, and they are friendly though overpriced. The other local shop which says on their website "we have the best prices on magazines near wholesale we will not be beat!!" was $20 each for the same thing on the same day. I asked if that was the best price he would do (afterall he does claim he won't be beat) the answer was a definitive no. And the place doesn't seem that friendly to me.   Then there's some items you look at the price tag and its like...  :o This is at all of them. Even sports authority selling an AR for $1600 I can get online for less than a grand.  ::)

It really does suck to not have a store I enjoy visiting. I'd be happy to support my LGS but not when it means paying 2,3,4,500 dollars more for a gun than what I could get it for online. Or accessories at or above MSRP. Now if I could just find an FFL that would have my gun ready in less than a week's time. Jury's still out on that one.

I just bought two 50rd boxes of FMJ 9mm Spear Lawman at Steubs for 40 bucks plus change. They actually have competitive prices compared to Sports Authority. I like Steubs they're friendly and helpful. Prices on their are reasonable as well however, if you can get it cheaper online plus shipping and FFL transfer fees then I say go for it. But I like to support the local gun stores here and there depending on their customer service. I haven't had any bad customer experiences from an LGS on the Big Island, just saw some ridiculous prices on certain things but i guess its the price we pay for paradise.

Everything in the islands is more expensive ugh. I just wish there was a public range in Hilo.

I’ve been to some big island gun stores.
Competitive prices.
I’ve seen Tokunaga store with Fed value bricks selling for sub $20 within the past 1 yr, Ruger 10/22 for 229.
I’ve seen Zane Sports selling a gun that nobody has anywhere on the web and at a competitive price.
I’ve seen JHara selling Savage MKII for 139, Hi Point 40cal Carbine for 289. No FFL fee and no shipping to add on.
Stuebs selling Kel-Tec pistols for sub 300.
They all sell good stuff.  You gotta be there at the right time.
I know a guy less than a yr ago who bought a shotgun (20G) for 80, he was at the “right place at the right time.”

I remember another time, while staying at the hotels nearby, just a 100 yds from King Kam is a little store called Elite Hunters, PMC .223 w/c was selling for $8.

I am not saying that all of the prices are good.  You got to be selective and patient, and if you don’t see what you want, ask anyway, might be in storage or be in a shipment coming over.

Another opportunity for a song.

It must just depend on what you are looking for because i have had very mixed experiences.

Jhara in hilo has far and away the best selection of ammo. They had OK prices on some .223 I bought but I looked at 45acp and 300WM they had in stock and I had to do a double take. Don't quote me but I think they had 50rd boxes of american eagle plain jane 230gr ball for I could swear it was between 40-50 dollars a box.

I just went to Kona Guns & Ammo web site.

It says that they have in stock Kel-Tec sub 2000, and Kel-Tec SU16.
2 very hard to get rifles even on Oahu.

Stopped by JHara today.  They had PMC .223 for 16.99 and Federal 5.56 for 17.99.  Had zero target 9mm, .40, or 45 (just JHP or Defense kine for super $$$).  FYI Winchester 9mm JHP was about $40.00 per box.  They do have some 30-30, 30 carbine, .270, and some bulk boxes of .380.

Haven't been to Stueb's in a while but their text said they just got some ammo in.

Solesource-- what did Zane have lost time you were there?  Anything interesting?  I used to go there quite a bit but he never had anything new.  But, the consignment guns were always interesting.

I stopped by Honolulu Firearms yesterday to check out their prices and to shoot something I haven't shot in a long time at their range.  I have to admit that place is like night and day difference between Art and the current owners and employees.  I can't say that it's my favorite place but it's definitely up there now (at least for me).  I can also see myself picking up some items there since the prices on some of the items were very comparable, if not cheaper, than a few of the other stores.

 to them for great service and good prices.

it's interesting, i spoke to a number of the younger guys, and they are very aware of the online reputation the shop has due to art
i tried to tell them that people are starting to realize the change and that they should increase their online presence
it seems like they are being held back by the older owners/operators

i kinda got the sense that the church does not want to own a gun store and that they would sell it if they could

all that aside, shannon and the guys are always friendly and helpful
even though i mostly try to pick up deals at their sales
BTW, they are going to have a labor day sale starting on friday
