GET BOTH
Indeed. Get a whole fruit basket.

Get both. Even better, get a couple of each.
Seriously though, if you had to choose one, I'd get an AR and a basic pump shotgun, like a Rem 870. All of the Saiga 12s I've shot have their quirks. Starting from mods needed from the get go, to how you reload, mag seating, etc. I've seen a bunch of them fail parts and malfunction repeatedly. Yeah, it's fun to shoot a Saiga 12, but I'd rather have a Benelli semi-auto.

buy my Saiga 12.....its still for sale in the classified section. ;)

What do you intend to with it. The ar is more flexable for more situations

If not both, I'd vote quality AR. If it has to be a semi-auto shotgun, I too would vote Benelli, especially with an extended mag tube.

I would consider a vepr12 instead of the saiga12
-
i would go ar if you dont have one yet
i rarely bring out the s12 anymore

+1 for the vepr12

Have any of you fired the VEPR12 yet?
-
Saiga12 and an AR lower......
You can always build the AR slowly......but at least you kinda got both

Get one of these
...for the win!

Looks just like the Saiga...does it have the same issues?
-
Saiga 12 or 5.56 ?
Now there's 2 ends of the spectrum.

saiga 12 w/ 20rd drums (no drums available for the vepr just yet) AND an AR lower

I was thinking more of the 8-10 round mags.
The 20 round drums are not worth the weight, and there is no realistic way I could carry them in a rig.
Two 20rd drums fit a "Harris radio pouch" perfectly. (http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa368/m249s/DSC_1986.jpg)
Not many shotguns can take advantage of a 20rd drum; the amount of firepower in a drum is well worth the weight tradeoff in my opinion. In addition, I feel most of the 8-10rd mags are not as durable as an MD arms drum. AGP mags are held together with small screws and feel flimsy to me, but the 20rd drum has a video of it being ran over by a truck and still performs. DRUMS>Stick mags. The only downfall of the drum is that it won't load some shells with a longer overall length.

I have become sold on a vepr over a saiga, but now the biggest issue is starting to be price. 1500 each = WOWZERS, and that's if you can find one.
Looks like the AR and possibly AK are still in the game, as I could easily purchase one of each for the price of 1 VEPR.
Don't even think about it then.
Get an AR and an AK.
Two of the most iconic rifles in history.
