so if an invading country were storm our beaches, you would stay home and gun fight out your living room window, or pack up some tactical equipment/ supply and find a strategic location to fend off the tyrants who would kill, rape, and take away your freedom.

Where we going? If an invading force stormed our islands they are going to sink boats trying to leave or shoot down planes trying to fly out.
In the event of a hurricane..........where we going?
Tidal wave..........sucks to be in the zone, but I'm about 1,100 ft up.
Mass chaos, roads are clogged, I'm not driving.
The only time I'd really consider it is if my house is on fire.

Bug out bag contains a jacket, change of clothes, toiletries, small first aid kit, light snacks and water, some cash and passport.

People think that after watching Red Dawn and movies like it that guerrilla warfare is all about running into the forest, living off the land and surprise attacking the enemy; its not. An invading Army may rape and pillage, but it probably wouldn't, because symmetrical warfare recommends winning the hearts and minds of the populace. If they started pillaging right off the back, they would create an entire population of pissed off people who would fight, rather than just a small resistance.
That being said, the deadliest guerrilla forces in the middle east are not the ones hiding in the mountains/deserts; they are the ones hiding right in plain view, blending in with the local population. This is why our forces have been gaining, essentially, no ground overseas: because we can't really ever know who the enemy is, or what they are going to do. If a small group of insurgents were to hide in the mountains of Hawaii, they can easily be located and destroyed, given the small land area of each island and the advances of technology in today's day and age.
So to answer your question: Yes, I would stay home, mind my own business and keep my head down; maybe even kiss their ass and pretend to help them. This would allow me to observe troop movement and tactics to develop a strategy, in which we could hit where it hurts when the opportunity arises, then retreat back to my home and wait for the next opportunity to strike.

My BOB contains basic survival gear: rope, fire, ammo, food, water, first aid, maps, gloves, light and some other stuff I can't think of right off the back. This isn't for an invading army, but more so in the event of a natural disaster, and I need to run for the high grounds behind my house to take shelter.
Basicly the same as you, act all calm and cool during an "invasion" and try to start some form of resistance if possible. As for natural disaster, grab a couple back packs and stuff them full of clothes and food. I have some other supplies for fire shelter that I would also pack, but nothing fancy as I would go to my friends house that is more sheltered than mine.

The only reason people hate us is because those with political power in our country have been interfering with everyone else's business since WWII.
If we have an administration that would simply focus on our own problems, while letting the rest of the world handle their own affairs, no one would even care about us. There is a difference between intervention on behalf of the innocent, and intervention on behalf of economic/political interests. For the past 65+ years, we have been intervening specifically for political and economic reasons. Prior to that, we didn't bother anyone, and no one bothered us. If we can get back to the original thinking of the founding fathers, which was a focus on internal problems while developing a commercial relationship with the rest of the world, I think that everyone would just leave us the hell alone.

Great response. My grab bag is designed more to get me back home rather than out to some place else. Living on Oahu means I am always about 30 miles maximum from home. In the event of a tsunami or earthquake, the roads will most likely be unpassable. At that point it's time to walk home. My bag contains enough food water and gear for a three day trip. Will it take that long? Probably not. But the weight/ability ratio allows me to carry that much. Since I surf north shore a lot my bag includes a new pair of my favorite hiking shoes and socks (slippas just won't do it across the koolaus).

I have an Eberlestock backpack, but it's not loaded. I only have a common 1st aid kit attached, other than that I need to pack it.

What are your thoughts on those less prepared with you? Many of my friends are tropical city folk who don't know how to wipe their asses in the woods let alone hike cross island. My kit includes a lot of high energy foods- bars and jerky. Of course if they were family they would have their own. The reason I ask ths is because someone seeing you prepared and realizing they're not will be the point of friction leading to violence.

I make sure that I that my family is prepared, I got little stash grab bags all over the my properties, I also travel with a compact bag containing small rations food, first aid kit, and hygiene! my wife thought i was paranoid until i showed her some footage and pictures of the 3rd world countries I've been in, and told her what they would do for food. Man i still have flash back on surviving of 1 MRE for days on end and literally kill our own food!!! DAMN i miss the good ol'days...

Ok, I'm going to get a roll of toilet paper for mine. guess should get a mini folding shovel for the toilet. Already got couple of takedowns, ammo and mags in them. They are the extendable ones that will fit the m4's too.
Cash, compass, knife, machete, multi tool, wind up radio, guess should put an old jacket or sweater in too.
Other stuff in there, mini can opener, mri's, rope, mess kit, water filtration bottle, lighters, first aid kit, if the time came, would pack flash light.
Good idea about having one on you in the car. Thinking about taking up hiking to get a feel for the loads.
Would probably hunker down in the house where all the food, guns, ammo, and comfort is, unless the situation demanded high tailing it.
Ok, and I'll pack adobo sauce too.

Great advice. Some of my fondest days of boy scouts was skipping the "award winning" dining hall "food" and catching my own. My question though is slightly different than keeping ourselves or immediate family prepared. In the early days of a major problem (earthquake, tsunami, etc) what do you do to prepare for encountering someone outside family who is not prepared as you head home? The real question is how to diffuse conflict over food/equipment you or your family may have in the eyes of the desperate?
For instance, I carry enough energy bars to give away to hungry kids. Second, I have 3 methods of water storage/purification in case of extended journeys or helping others. My goal is to prevent any conflict from going up the force continuum into the physical self defense level. What else do you (all) think might help in this respect (specifically with kit - strategic methods like avoiding meetings are outside my interest).

Great list! Any favorite maps you'd pack? I have a hikers guide to Oahu that is pretty thorough but would fail miserably if I went off the marked trails and needed to do real orienteering.

thats a pretty great idea!! It's always good to defuse conflict. It's always good to help others, who knows they might help you out when you need the help etc.
Well for me, I would avoid the conflict unless they are in need of my assistants, with a violent situation in my path I would try to avoid it. You have more to loose then the individual(s) that is reeking havoc. That's just me.

Thanks, but I can't claim it as my own. I was reading about the topic and one of the great points made was that just because you recognize that social order may be breaking down doesn't mean that law enforcement will realize it. And since walking around with a firearm openly is generally illegal in this state, anyone carrying one may be seen as an aggressor and dealt with harshly. I agree avoiding the confrontation is best but learning to handle it with expertise will be required in any effort to move across the island(s) on foot.

Ideas I have been toying with include storing a folding bike at a friends place that is more than 15 miles away and making arrangements with a friend to spend time at their home should my family become stuck away from home when an event occurs.
What kind of maps do you pack in your kit?
DRT, I don't carry maps, I just know how to navigate throughout theses mountains, I've been in these mountains ever since I was 5yrs old, the first thing I did when I got back was call up my old neighborhood buddies, went on a hike, got high, and just keep walking....
