Newbie here so sorry if this is a silly question, but can I shoot pigs on my land (ola'a - big island) wo/a hunting license? I'm signed up for the hunter ed class in September but I was wondering about before then. If I can, do all the rules n restrictions apply as when hunting on state land? Like handgun vs rifle; seasonal restrictions on animal types; etc?

No questions are newbie questions! Should've posted this in the "hunting" section....probably would have gotten a faster response. But Yes! You need a hunters license whether you are on public or private land

I read the help section on how to delete posts so I reposted this in the right section and then tried to delete his but it won't allow me. I can only see "modify". It was ambiguous about whether or not I need special rights from admin to do that, but whatever - I cant delete it. I guess admin will.

Its a sad day when you need to obtain a license from the government to hunt on your own land ain't it. Especially something like feral pigs. I'd tell em to go sh*t in their hat.

Don't have much land, but its locked in by reserve so makes for cozy hunting

Yeah, I have to schedule it so i can get off work. Can't take off for uncertain standby. But I've been tryin to get in since last year but the dates fill up the moment they open the dates. Even if I'm practically the first one to call. I'd swear people get connections and get VIP action going on. So least i got sept.

My hunters ed class on Oahu took every stand-by that was there. They definitely violated the fire code for that room.

FWIW, licensed hunters are the biggest contributors to wildlife preservation than any other group, via the licensing fees. Basically, our choice is to either fund an effective wildlife management program in our state, or deal with decimated wildlife populations and/or diseased and starving animals. It's worth a dedicated hunter's time and ten bucks to get involved in our respective state's WMP's, because otherwise, it can easily get corrupted by whimsical ignorant local politicians, pressure from high-profile goofball groups like PETA, Federal overreach and/or dominated by local rich landowners. Generally speaking, what's good for the landowners that lease to licensed hunters is good for everyone involved, but that is unfortunately not true for every statute. For instance, some laws can be clearly identified as an attempt to make hunting an exclusive, discriminatory "rich man's sport"; most common in many states are minimum acreage requirements to qualify for certain types of exclusive permits. This is the sort of thing that more hunter scrutiny can mitigate.

I think a landowner or agent out here can shoot any wild critter that is destroying his crop or harassing his livestock, in or out of season, with or without a hunting license.
Possibly similar in HI?

yeah.....probably not that easy here in the 'people's republic of Hawaii'
:0. But funny, yesterday my neighbor about 1000' away was blasting away rapid fire with what sounded like a handgun, on and off for about an hour. No LE ever came up the easement. And the neighbor past him another 1000' is an HPD officer, so I'm not too worried about gunfire attracting attention. More about what if a DOFAW drone see me bag'n dress a pig or axis dear or something on my land :)

DOFAW don't got money for that and probably not interested anyways.
DOCARE are the ones that do enforcement and who cite people. Try calling them on the weekend though to report something. Good luck.

WTF man!?!? So do I get this right: the DLNR administers the hunter Ed program and license; the DOFAW dictates and administers the hunting regulations; and DOCARE enforces said regulations? F'ing bloated bureaucracies this state creates! How many we need? Makes me sick. You imaging the monstrous salaries and retirement funds and medical bennies we fund for those triply redundant bureaucracies?

Then you have your separate divisions; Division of Forestry and Wildlife(DOFAW), Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement(DOCARE), Division of Aquatic Resources(DOAR or something like that), Na Ala Hele(trails), Oahu Invasive Species Committee (OISC), Native Area Restorations(NARS), etc, etc, etc. As far as salaries, some employees are actual state employees, very few though, others are "contracted" you could say by an outside company so not technically state workers, just working along side them. They also run temporary positions, interns, volunteers, etc, etc.

Arbitrary and capricious at best. They don't legislate anything, they govern by " Administartive rules" These have the same force as law, but are promulgated at meetings of the Board.
Six guys, I think, get to vote on them,all appointed, not a one elected. Not accountable in any way to the people.
I am not a hunter, so I don't have first hand info on what has been laid on them, but in the boating, fishing area, they have decided that anyone that operates a boat, any boat, must have proof of an approved boating course before 11/14 and those of you that used to spear fish with SCUBA on the west side of the Big Island, it is no longer permitted in the fishery management zones, which covers most of the Kona Coast. Possession of a three prong is de-facto evidence of Spearing fish. Never mind the potential shark defensive possibility.
" Administrative Rules" Have all the force of law. Citations, court, potential for Jail time and the like.
And this stuff made the news where?

eloquent my friend. Couldn't have said it better! And the only local coverage about the spear fishing regs was by KITV which covered the meeting in kona. Got pretty heated and one of the guys defending the new rules got a sour ass attitude towards a spear fisher. He really was a condescending class A ballsack. And most of the people complaining about any and all of the madness we see in legislation over the last decade are lifetime dems who keep voting to put these statists in office. There's a total disconnect between the people they vote for and the insane laws they complain about. They'll never see a connection.
