General Discussion / CCW “Renewal”
« on: February 20, 2024, 01:04:30 PM »
Under the new rules permits can be submitted for renewal 90 days before expiration but it also says permits issued in 2023 cannot be renewed and need to be submitted as new applications. Does that mean I can just go in to get a permit before the existing one expires since I don’t see any stipulation about having an overlap with “old” permits and current ones?

General Discussion / Wasted Tax Dollars
« on: January 18, 2024, 06:39:06 PM »
Is the amount of money the state spends on losing cases to HIFICO and attorneys like Alan Beck available to the public? Seems like the anti 2A law makers don’t care about repercussions of submitting laws that they know will get shot down when contested in court. Perhaps they’d be less inclined to submit those laws if they knew that the people they represent were aware how much money they’re throwing into the drain every time they try to infringe on 2A rights. I’m sure they spent a pretty penny getting those mainland attorneys to try back the CCW case that they lost.

General Discussion / Re: Silhouette/Club Side Closed Permanently?
« on: December 18, 2023, 07:23:09 PM »
heard some news over the weekend that they are talking about doing some berm work and some other changes and may have more info in the weeks or months to come
probably will be slow going if anything. but it's encouraging. better some news than no news
I'll try get more info when I can

Thanks! Appreciate the update, I saw some people mentioning the best way to get info was to go in person but it’s quite the drive to that side. Was holding off planning any day trips till they’re fully operational again

General Discussion / Silhouette/Club Side Closed Permanently?

Been a while since I visited the range because they closed the silhouette/club side. Anyone heard any updates? As much as I love indoor ranges I miss plinking.

General Discussion / Current CCW Wait Time
« on: November 10, 2023, 07:28:06 PM »
Anyone know what the current wait is like? I know the majority of us got it earlier this year or when HPD “cleared” out the backlog. Does that mean it’s closer to 2 weeks now similar to PTA or is it still a few months? Considering going back for another permit.

General Discussion / Re: Israeli gun buy surge

Those who participated in the 10/21 Hawaii gun buy back program might regret what they did.

Or maybe not.  Maybe they feel nothing happening in the world will happen here in wonderful Hawaii no ka oi.

Because we special.  And the police will protect us.  And our leaders care for us.  And our safety.

Go practice your sheep call, why don't you.

Only thing they’re gonna regret is that they didn’t have more guns to turn in. Head in the sand.

So I hade my phone on Airplane mode & using Wifi + wifi calling. I didn't get the FEMA message. I usually do this to save on mobile data.

my cousins phone with mobile data off & using wifi + wifi calling did get the FEMA message.

So the ISP for the wifi network is Spectrum. I assume ISP's aren't involved and just Phone Companies.

You were able to have your WiFi on with airplane mode at the same time?

General Discussion / Re: HPD issuing any CCW permits?

Saw someone post on hifico Facebook that they needed to get health clearance for sleep apnea? Is HPD really trying to have another “homesick” situation on their hands already? These mental health requirements seem arbitrary and subjective at best.

I'm afraid to think what his interpretation of "gave him the opportunity" is.

I’d be interested to see one of those “audit the audit” guys come out here and make a video because I’d bet my bottom dollar that the second you do your duty to inform, they’ll draw their service weapon. If they see you recording, they might exercise some restraint before unloading on you but if there’s no camera it’s their word against yours and their body cam footage will conveniently disappear if they didn’t already turn it off for the encounter.

I couldn’t find the exact article/thread but I recall the police chief telling the public to call 911 if they suspect or someone carrying a firearm. I wonder if it’s actually happened yet because there’s no shortage of Karen’s.

There’s also no shortage of criminals who carry illegally as it is so I don’t see how his stance would make any difference other than legal gun owners being harassed and potentially shot during an encounter.

A guy I went to high school with who is now in HPD said that he’d gladly light up a ccw holder if they gave him the opportunity (not knowing that I am a holder myself) I hope that’s not the general sentiment towards permit holders but I wouldn’t doubt if it was.

I would have assumed this thread was going to get blown up with people suddenly getting their permits since the chief said he was going to clear the backlog by the end of the month. Although even a 14 day arbitrary wait period is not even necessary, to pump through 1000apps in a month seems pretty unrealistic

General Discussion / Order to Surrender Firearms due to Head Injury?
« on: August 04, 2023, 02:54:41 PM »
I had a friend who recently applied for a CCW permit, they went through his medical records and due to a head injury he had in the past they ordered him to surrender all of his firearms till he got medical clearance. He of course as a law abiding citizen surrendered his firearm to HPD. He then went to see a doctor to get clearance, returned to HPD and they said it wasn’t sufficient. He went back to the doctor again and got a more detailed report which he brought back to HPD, they accepted the second note and told him to pick up his firearm on a set date. He went to pick up the firearm on the instructed date and was told that it wasn’t ready for pickup and that he would have to come back. He had that happen to him 2 more times and he still has not gotten his firearm returned.

Is this setting the precedent that if you get denied a CCW permit they have grounds to confiscate all your firearms?

PS: I advised him to reach out to a lawyer but he’s been busy traveling for work and the potential legal fees and time investment would be a setback.

General Discussion / Re: Medical records
« on: August 04, 2023, 02:46:27 PM »
How does the medical records thing work, I didn’t take meds for my “anxiety” that was diagnosed when I was like 12, and I have ADHD and am taking meds for just ADHD. Does either of these disqualify me from owning  a long gun or pistol

You may initially run into problems but the situation would be similar to the situation where the service member was denied due to seeing a therapist for homesickness. State lost the lawsuit and had to pay out.

Yep. Why certified letters? Why not mail the license to you? Why all the nonsense? Ridiculous and a waste of our time and money. Waste of police resources for nonsense extra “checks”.  If you can own a handgun you can carry it. Plain and simple. Both require the exact same things to be legal.

I really hope someone challenges the requirements for licensing in itself as unconstitutional. We all know it is, according to the 2nd Amendment and the SCOTUS Bruen decision. Show me a analog of a law in the 1700 that required a license to carry a firearm.

Arizona, I filled out the renewal, sent in a money order, they mailed me the license. Fricken simple.

I wonder if they’re worried that someone could intercept the mail from the recipient. The cards are on par with the old library cards or IDs you’d get as a student in school. You figure they’d put a little more effort into them like the holographics the drivers licenses have. I imagine someone could easily forge these low quality permit cards.

Just received a call from one of the officers handling my paperwork, told me that my handgun affidavit was notarized before the date I took the class. So I have to get an updated affidavit and turn it in. This was after waiting 4 months since the last time I was contacted. Hopefully I dont get put back in the bottom of the pile now.

Similar experience, they changed the wording requirement on the affidavits after I had already provided it and told me I needed to get a new one because it didn’t meet the new criteria almost 3 months after I initially submitted my paperwork.

Finally got mine, took about 4 months. It seems like if you’re lucky you’ll get it in 3 months and if you’re unlucky it’ll be 5+ months.

My paperwork did need multiple corrections which were spotted at different times during the review process, not sure why it wasn’t caught all at once but as someone else mentioned on the forum, triple check all your paperwork when dropping it off.

Also remember to bring exact change because they don’t take card, won’t make change, and won’t keep the extra.

General Discussion / Re: No Card Payments at Registration Window?
« on: July 07, 2023, 04:45:15 PM »
It is the make it more difficult policy.

Next year you’ll have to bring the payment in specific denominations. $3 of the payment in coins, minted 1950-1999. $7 of the payment in bills, $1 bills aren’t accepted you can only pay with a $2 bill and a $5 bill. Just like vending machines the corners can’t be creased or wrinkled because they need to fit through the super small hole in their window. $10 is $10 but rules are rules.

Did they explain why?  Like CC machine broken, network down, or new policy?

No explanation offered, I know they’re begrudgingly issuing out the permits as it is so I wasn’t about to ask and prolong the process longer than need be. I already had to wait 4 months. With nobody else in line they still took 45 mins to get my permit card to the window for pickup.

Moral of the story, bring exact amount in cash.

Were you picking up a license to carry or registering out of state firearms?
