Interesting read. It brings up a thought-provoking question.
US Government employees were asked/told to go man a post in a foreign country. I would expect the government to take responsibility for getting these employees and families home safely.
The other side of the coin is anyone that elects to go to somewhere with civil unrest. Are they cognizant of the unrest and taking a calculated risk? When I visit Japan, I know the country is politically safe. However, I also know there is a risk of seismic activity. It's a small, calculated risk compared to going to the middle east.
This includes some companies that go to foreign countries for business deals. If a crisis starts, is the US supposed to put troops in harm's way? How about the cost of the resources?
Will the companies that were trying to make multimillion dollar deals going to say, "my bad" and reimburse the US for the cost of extraction? Maybe some insurance company can make a policy based on risk assessment. The policy would be based on the likelihood of something collapsing while the company is trying to make big bucks. At the same time probably taking away jobs from US citizens.
It's a larger version of tourists going past the barrier at (Halona) Blow Hole to look inside or get pictures to post on an internet platform. Are we, the taxpayers, responsible for rescue costs and/or body recovery costs? Same thing goes for the Stairway to Heaven, Hawaii Volcanos National Park, Yellowstone National Park and other places where people are vying for a Darwin Award.

Sshhhh...it's a secret.
But coincidentally I just saw a recent pic of her on Facebook yesterday.  She still looks good. It's the Chinese blood.
Is it politically correct to ask if it is "RED" Chinese blood.

Off Topic / Re: What happened to the Vegas I used to know.....smh

I stayed at Mainstreet March 23 -28, this year, after a long hiatus due to Covid. What shocked me was the $15 minimums on the tables and the atmosphere on Fremont Street. It looked cheap and dirty. Boyd Rewards seem to "forget" the Hawaii tourists. (I still have my Hawaii Only B Connected card(?) Hawaii players club card.) Now Boyd Points expire after 6 months of inactivity. For me, doing a Vegas trip every 6 months to keep my status is out of the question. I'm not a big gambler. It took me the entire trip to move up to Sapphire.

I stayed again at the Mainstreet October 19 - 25. I was aware the F1 was scheduled in 2 weeks but didn't expect the poor planning. The fountains at the Mirage were blocked off on the street side, traffic was horrible, and the locals were over it. I rented a car one day and with all the detours, it took me 15 minutes to get out of Vegas.

Showing my age, I miss the old psychology of the casinos. Was it that long ago that there were junkets for $200 including airfare, hotels and meals? They were catering to players. The Cal had $2 craps and 21 tables. Walking into a casino, you could hear the clanking of $1 coins dropping into the metal bowl of a slot machine, the waitresses pushing cocktails and tobacco, and the players waving down a change girl.

I guess I turned into an old fut. The old casino psychology of the player losing a few bucks and having a good time has been replaced by extracting as much money as possible ASAP. Unfortunately, that seems to be same perception tourists have when they visit our islands.

Las Vegas isn't the only thing that has changed. My priorities have also. Prior to my last 2 trips to Vegas, in 30 years I saw only 2 shows and went on one tour, On the last 2 trips I've seem Donny Osman, Terry Fator, Barry Manlow, Shin Lim, and Jeff Dunham. Las Vegas has had to reinvent itself to remain competitive in the tourist market. What can I say? We can complain about the changes we don't like, but its business. If we don't like something, we have to vote with our dollars.

I just registered on this site. I was born and raised on Oahu and moved to Kona in 1981. I was shooting competitive 3 position rifle in the ILH and competed in the Kamehameha Invitational and Maui Invitational for many years. I used to go to Koko Head Range almost every Sunday in the early 1970s shooting .22 target rifles and a variety of handguns. My coach and I were intermittently called upon to run the rifle range which at that time was with a bullhorn.
On Hawaii Island, I was a "regular" at Shooters Choice (until it closed) and would help the Japanese tourists from time to time. I've been active with the Boy Scout Program for about 15-20 years and was an RSO (rifle, handgun, shotgun) for many years.
I am not a hunter. I prefer punching paper and clays.
