General Discussion / Re: "I am going to the range today"
« on: March 02, 2025, 12:07:10 PM »
I miss going during the weekdays. :(  My wife and I watch our grandson (9months) and our great-grandson (17months) during the weekdays now.  Full time babysitters.  I love it but still miss going to the range.

I know from feedback that on weekends the rifle and pistol sides are not as busy after 2pm.  Is this still the case?

Haven't gone for so long I'm kinda shame I won't even hit the target frame let alone the target itself.

Went at 9ish today and had maybe 3-4 open seats.  At least one open all the way to 1130.  No shame, no one cares. Send it  :shaka:

Do you need to make a reservation for weekend rifle side? Plan on going but didn’t make one. Hoping there’s a waitlist or something…

Firearms and Accessories / Slide milling for RDS and serrations
« on: October 02, 2023, 03:45:29 PM »
Aloha,

Is there any local shops/businesses recommended for milling services?

If not local any personal experiences using mainland shops?

End goal is to revive a M&P 1.0 by adding a RDS(need that milled out), ports, and serrations.

Mahaloz for any leads!   :shaka:

General Discussion / Re: Kokohead shooting complex

Haven’t been to kokohead since it’s reopened. Is the rifle side target frames way longer in size now?
“** Effective Saturday, June 3, 2023: For rifle range targets, center of lowest target must be at least 5 feet from the ground.”
That’s taller than my previous entire target stand.

I guess I’m just venting…or hoping the measurements provided are incorrect.

https://www.honolulu.gov/rep/site/dpr/pmrs_docs/Rifle_Range_target_frame_April_2023_Koko_Head_Shooting_Complex.pdf

Assuming this design would be sufficient.  Seen a target frame someone was selling that was over 7’.

Too bad it is difficult to find Wolf or other Russian LR primers now days. These primers net very good ES/SD numbers. And, as a plus, they were very cheap.

The theory was, they were ‘softer’, as in the fire or spark was soft. That was said to give more consistent powder ignition.

When those primers got hard to find, I switched to CCI exclusively. They didn’t net as good ES/SD, however, I found them to be consistent and reliable.

Federal match primers are said to have a similar ‘soft’ ignition (good ES/SD), problem is that the primer cup is also soft material. That limits your max pressure that the primer itself can contain.

Sucks is that I don’t see any signs of over pressure and my loads are not near max recommendations (previously I was, but ladder tested to a lower node) and the fact that I’ve stocked up on both Fed and Win.  I’ll probably validate with a chrono and check velocity.  I can say I was previously happy with my ES/SD numbers…

Sharing my reloading experience.  Something I came across when I was reloading last night was the difference in diameter of Federal GM210 and Winchester WLR primers. Something I will now consider when using cases that have been used (I was using 6th shot Lapua brass) as I have signs of gas’s escaping (between primer and brass primer pockets) with Winchester primers even though the primer pockets are within go/no-go criteria.

Hope this helps someone  :shaka:

Surfed threes yesterday and noticed in the FDR parking lot a constant stream of guys in a variety of different styles of fatigues with duffel bags who look like they just got off a plane heading for the tourist hotels.

At least HNN finally picked up the story

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2022/07/31/pelosi-confirms-trip-asia-no-mention-taiwan/

Must have been a sick surf session!  Got wet at White Plains and was about as good as it gets for that break.  :shaka:
My bet is that Pelosi skips Taiwan and the battle group goes through the Taiwan Straight.

Crazy “game” of chicken, especially with a full battle group in the area.

Thx for the replies 🤙🏼
I was one of those that had my CO sign the affidavit.  Guess that’s a no go nowadays.

Kind of off topic, but does anyone know if the hunters online course certification be sufficient for use vice a permit to acquire?

Don’t mind me as i go ahead and bring this thread back… Does anyone know if military affidavit works anymore or has a template to use?  I did this process in 15’ (i think) without issue but I can find any HPD templates.

So question for you centerfire reloaders.  Do you ALWAYS stick with charge weights less than the manual?  No matter the velocity you're seeing?  Or do you usually push a little beyond the max charge weight and watch for signs of overpressure?  I spoke to a few shooting buddies and the responses ran the range.  I hope to get to doing the powder charge tests soon and my initial thought was to go beyond the max charge by maybe 2-3 steps (0.2 gr increments).  It would be 2x per charge weight, so not a whole lot of effort.
[/quote]

I’d say as long as you’ve worked up to the max charge.  For example min: 37.5gr   max: 41.6gr      If my current load development took me to 39gr, I wouldn’t jump to the max but work it up to there watching for over pressures (I ended up at 42.9gr).  I would also say it depends on the goals of your loads.  I went over to get better velocities when I was able to shoot up to 600yrds.  If you’re doing the same, it makes sense to me to go over max.  I’m actually re-doing my development process to find nodes below max charge (no need high velocity at 100yrds).  I don’t anneal, and going over max charge worked the brass (had to toss brass at 5-6 reloads, loose primer pockets).

Some things to take into consideration for pressure differences (from books or online data like https://www.hodgdonreloading.com/reloading-data-center) COAL if you are limited in length for a magazine, different primers/powders, and case volume.  Good luck! :shaka:

Nice necropost! LOL.

JK. Good to see you posting again. I remember you said you were getting a GAP-10 a while back.

  I’ll figure it out eventually.  I had a gap 10... regret selling her.  I just really enjoy my bolt now.

Who is shooting this Memorial Day weekend?

I'm planning on helping out a friend test out loads for their rifle.  I don't plan on shooting much myself this weekend.  Mostly just looking forward to a weekend away from things.  I was able to shoot a bunch last weekend, so good to get back into the swing of things.

Planning on testing a few different loads myself.  Haven’t shot since before COVID  :geekdanc:
