Most may not be able to read the whole article unless you subscribe to the star advertiser.

In general, UH Criminology professor Meda Chesney-Lind, UH West-Oahu instructor Aaron Hunger, and a few others question if the recent rash of police involved shootings are justified.  Some notable quoted headlines are...
Shooting of James Pickard Jr - http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/26270682/name-released-of-man-shot-killed-by-police
Shooting of Gregory Gordon - http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/20591137/police-reportedly-shoot-man-who-attempted-to
Shooting of Richard Nelson - http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/26158090/happening-now-portion-of-kuhio-avenue-closed-as-police-investigate-shooting
Shooting of Amery Kahale-Sugimura - http://khon2.com/2014/01/30/man-arrested-for-assaulting-police-officer-robbery-drug-offenses/
Pearl City 7-11 shooting - http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/26264598/hpd-officer-injured-by-suspected-car-thief
Red Hill shooting - http://khon2.com/2014/07/24/police-search-for-suspect-car-involved-in-red-hill-shooting/

Personally... I'm okay with how the police handled all these shootings.  I would do the same and of course if someone is trying to run you over with a car, yelling out instructions to stop wont work.  Tasing the car aint gonna do crap but electrically charge the shell of the vehicle.  Beating the car with my baton will probably just bounce back hitting myself.  Letting them go... well if they doing this with the police, who knows what they'll do to everyone else and knowing police wont engage to lethal force... grand theft auto time!  <-- like the game.

Although we don't have the full story and media tends to favor key specifics only to get you to read their story, what do you think???

Legal and Activism / Re: Failure to ID

HAWAII STATUTES AND CODES

§291C-172  Refusal to provide identification.

     (a)  Except as provided in subsection (b), any person detained for a violation of this chapter shall provide the person's name and address, or any proof thereof, or both, upon the lawful order or direction of any police officer in the course and scope of the officer's duties pursuant to this chapter.

     (b)  A pedestrian who is detained for violating part VII of this chapter shall provide the person's name and address upon the lawful order or direction of a police officer in the course and scope of the officer's duties.  If the officer has reasonable grounds to believe that the person is being deceptive or misleading in providing the person's name and address, the person shall provide such proof thereof, upon the lawful order or direction of the police officer. [L 1978, c 111, pt of §2; am L 1984, c 215, §1; am L 1995, c 169, §1]

You know what's funny about this section?  Its only a fine!  See how dumb lawmakers are in Hawaii?  I consulted with a buddy, who is an Officer here, about this.  He said only if you commit a violation under the City Ordinances, you can be arrested for refusing to provide ID... and almost all City Ordinances mirror the Hawaii Statutes in some way.

Like what someone said, im sure HPD doesnt stop any random person doing "nothing" without reason or getting complaint from someone.  This aint L.A.

Only if a soldier will carry those weapons on the battlefield.

BTW, chemical & biological weapons are illegal, even though Iraq and Syria have/have used them.

Artillery isn't a "carry" item for soldiers.

how about grenades?  ;)

Yea sorry this is my first time really discussing things like this.  I know almost nobody that owns firearms, besides my self, so i never really had discussion.  I just went through the process accepting it.  Tho it would be nice to have no regulations, i figured some are necessary.

I do think criminal background checks are necessary tho.  Tho the system may be flawed, im sure in court you need beyond a reasonable doubt that an actual crime existed.  Stealing, assault, property damage is all crime... whether intent can be proved is the challenge, which is probably more harder for the prosecutor to prove.  Criminals should not be allowed to own a gun.. Should be reserved for the law abiding citizen.  Certain felonies are pretty serious crimes but tax invasion... yea not so serious to take your 2A away from you

Prohibiting Full auto  - Agree.  Full auto has no real life usage except war.  Only makes accuracy plummet.  Maybe heavily regulate this.
There is no real reason for owning a 600HP automobile except to race either, but they're not illegal. And, FYI, full auto is legal on the Federal level, just not our state. In states that allow full auto ownership, none are used in crimes....
Prohibiting Suppressors/Silencers - Agree.  Although they dont make a firearm completely silent in most cases.
Why? The benefits, even if they don't make the firearm totally silent, it does reduce the decibel levels dramatically which could help with hearing loss. In some European countries, they are required for hunting so as not to disturb the other wildlife.
Assault Weapons Ban - Disagree.  I think most firearm related crimes involve handguns anyway.
Prohibiting Felons, Domestic Violence, Violent Criminals From Owning Firearms - Agree.  Criminals never learn.  Possibly even certain or specific number of drug convictions.
Do you agree with the Lautenberg Amendment that makes those convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence ineligible to own firearms? Should non-violent felons be allowed to own firearms?
Prohibiting Certain Diagnosed Mental Disorders - Agree.
Which ones?
Background Checks - Agree because you need this for criminal and mental disorder checks.
Permit to Purchase - Agree just because of the required checks that would be performed and this would show proof you are fit.  Obtaining a permit should be more streamline and done in a timely manner
What other core Constitutional rights do you advocate a permitting process for?
Prohibiting Explosives. - Agree.  Current law for this is satisfactory.  Again, no real life situation to own explosives besides construction and war
Should that include reactive targets like Tannerite?
Limiting Magazine Capacity - Disagree.  Getting around this is easy by carrying more magazines.
Uhhh, no. You wake up in the middle of the night to noise in your house and grab your self-defense handgun. You are quickly confronted by three home invaders. I don't know about you, but I want maximum capacity in the magazine I have in that gun because the likelihood of me (or you) being able to grab additional magazines is pretty low....
Registration of Firearms - I am mixed.  As an American right, it shouldnt require registration.  I can see registration being used against us in the the future tho.  It should be required to report stolen a firearm tho registering would help enforce that.  Registration should be done in a easier and more timely manner.  I like the idea of holding gun owners liable for their firearms like locking it up when you arent home!
So what are the penalties for not reporting it and what time frame must you report it missing? As for the liability issue, why should the owners be responsible if a criminal breaks into their house and steals their gun and then uses it criminally? Does the car owner who has his car stolen get charged with a crime if he didn't have his vehicle in a secure and locked garage when it was stolen?
Allow Concealed Carry only after meeting certain requirements
A person has taken a CC training class which would include firearm training and legal training - Agree
What would that training consist of? Who gets to decide? Does the legal training have to be by a lawyer? How long does the training have to be?
A person has to obtain a permit to CC a firearm (maybe even to include the specific firearm allowed to carry on it) - Agree just because if training is required, permit shows proof.  It shouldnt matter what firearm you are allowed to carry unless the training class performs an accuracy proficiency on that particular firearm like how LEOs do.
So you should have to show proficiency with any firearm you may want to carry? What if the gun you "tested with" breaks and you want to carry another one but haven't "tested out" on it yet? Can you do an "emergency" qualification so you don't have to be unarmed while you wait to schedule your proficiency test?
A person cannot carry a CC firearm while they are intoxicated - 100% agree.  Maybe similar to a DUI tolerance
So I can have a few beers and still be legal to drive my car, which kills many more people each year than guns, but I cannot carry my firearm?
Allow Open Carry - Disagree.  Open carry just doesnt make sense except for LEOs.  Just causes unwanted public attention.  I would only agree to open carry if you are required to have a permit and identify yourself with a government picture ID.  I watch too much of those Oregon open carry youtube clips and it irritates me.  Just think if a felon open carries and you arent required to identify yourself.
Speaking your mind on your proverbial soapbox on the corner of the street or in a park often draws unwanted public attention, should that be illegal? Loud preaching on a sidewalk is also bound to garner unwanted public attention, should that also be illegal? As for the felon, you're comfortable with him carrying concealed? You may not "like" open carry, or agree with it, but it is, especially where no permit is required, one of the purest means by which to express your Second Amendment rights.
Required to Notify LEO you are Carrying Upon Being Stopped - Agree.  Just because of the nature of their job.
Why? As any LEO will tell you, they automatically assume that anyone they stop is carrying. Try and find that video of the Ohio guy who was berated and threatened to be shot by the cop arresting him because he didn't tell the cop he was carrying "quick" enough. And that is the problem. If there is a mandatory disclosure to law enforcement, there will always be the ability of a "bad apple" making a case out of you not telling him "soon enough." And, is a disclosure mandatory on an non-consensual stop, or is it mandated for a consensual stop, meaning that anytime an LEO said anything to you, including "good morning" as you passed on the street, you'd be mandated to disclose you were carrying a firearm....

I just think current laws on full auto and suppressors are fine.  Using full auto in a self defense situation could harm innocent bystanders very easily
Domestic violence just bc the prior nature of people living in such close quarters together can get ugly fast.  Violent crimes just because of their way of thinking.  Maybe 3 convictions or more then???
Mental disorders just because their thought process.  Guess it really depends on the mental disorder like depression.
Maybe no permit to purchase necessary if it all can be done at a gun shop.
I also think current explosive laws are satisfactory.  What exactly are you gonna use them for anyway?
Limiting Magazine capacity i dont support.  Like i said... you could easily get around this by carrying more magazines so it negates this law.  Maybe i worded it wrong but i support hi-cap mags
I suppose there is really no sense in registration but requiring to report stolen firearms i support.  Keeping them out of reach of children is a must.  Sorry i dont talk about firearm politics much.
Before you conceal carry, i think you should be trained in the use of force and other similar responsibility.  Having a permit just bc it shows you took that training class.  Being intoxicated and driving is dangerous so why should i allowed to be intoxicated and carry?  People in general do a lot of dumb things when they are intoxicated.
Open carry... still against just because it causes alarm to the general public.  Sorry
Stopped by LEOs... anytime you are being lawfully detained.  Casual encounters no need.

I dunno do i sound anti-gun?  sorry.  i might be in limbo but more pro-gun... i just think there should be at least some limitations

Bottom line... I think capable and model citizens have the right to own firearms and protect themselves. which is why i support background checks.   But those capable/model citizens should also be trained to some extent to help prevent certain incidents, as some people are naturally clumsy and irresponsible.  Too bad they dont make it this hard to drive/own a car...

General Discussion / Re: $5000
« on: November 07, 2013, 03:48:16 AM »
I would buy firearms that are everywhere in the world.  I like to get anything the military, police, or what most civilians have.  Also whatever caliber is the most popular.  The firearms that are popular are already proven and will be your friend when the SHTF due to the ease of finding spare parts, finding spare magazines, and finding ammo.  Also any NATO firearms or calibers can probably be found easily in non-NATO regions.

1. Glock 19 - Most popular among police forces and civilian alike.  9mm is everywhere.
2. AR15 - Military issues them, police forces use them, almost every gun owner has one.
3. Remington 870 - Most popular shotgun.  Mossberg 590 probably the 2nd most popular.
4. AK47 - This gun is literally everywhere... EVERYWHERE!
5. 1911 - It's been around for 100 years and probably only getting more popular.
6. Remington 700 - Popular among military and police.  .308 is probably the 3rd easiest rifle caliber to find... Behind .556 and 7.62x39.
7. M1A - If you suck at sniping like me and require many follow up shots... This is a semi auto .308 that is still used by the military... or at least used too.  Still popular among civilians.
8. Ruger .22 pistol or rifle. - Ruger .22s are proven and .22 ammo is extremely cheap and plentiful.  Perfect for hunting small game and can still be deadly to humans if it comes to it.
9. Smith and Wesson revolver - I'm not knowledgable on revolvers but Smith and Wesson revolvers have been used by almost all LE agencies back in the day.  Revolvers are very good pistols as they have very little moving parts, unlike like semi autos.  It's like comparing a carburated vehicle to fuel injected... for you car peeps.  Some just dislike revolvers but they have their advantages.  I would get a .357 revolver just because to can shoot both .357 and .38 calibers.  .38s are still pretty plentiful out there.

I wouldn't buy anything in a fancy caliber that you'll have a hard time finding or a firearm that isn't used by the military or police.  To me... If the military or police use it... you know it has been tested beyond its limits and is proven.  Or you could just buy a Les Baer and wait several paychecks to own your next gun.  ;)

All that should be under $5k... I think

General Discussion / Re: Mossberg 590 A1 or Remington 870 Tactical?
« on: December 30, 2012, 05:21:03 PM »
i just go with what our military uses.  i think they use both but more of the 870s.  could be wrong.  plus there are more 870s out there floating around so means they are probably more preferred and probably more stuff out there for it.

someone told me that magnum is owned by New Hope now?   or maybe someone that goes to New Hope.  not sure which it was.

Colt808 is right.  i know a few cops and their job may be easy at times but hard just as equally.  my college teacher was an ex cop an he would share some of his encounters.  it may have been fluffed, i dont kno, but it sounds like they go thru a lot.  if you think its easy, join HPD so see how its like encountering these criminals and crazy ppl everyday.  i think its the ppl who hate cops are the ones who get ticketed or arrested by them a lot.  the law is the law and you break it, you risk it.  by speaking with my police friends, as long as you are cooperative, calm, and respectful, you are most likely going to get the best experience out of them.  when you start talking back is when you get bad experiences.  dont try to out smart them either.  they do this on a daily basis for a living.  most of the time they are right but occasionally make mistakes.  when i get pulled over for stupid traffic violations, i risk eating it.  i dont drop names or anything.  plus all my police friends tell me that they aint gonna tell another policeman what to do bc they aint there and dont know how it went down.  i know what i did wrong so i man up.  try watch the show 'Cops' once in a while.  they tell me this is what they do what the public eye dont see, including in this state.  that is true reality TV.  dont get me wrong... i dont like police either, bc they can ruin my day, but i have a little more respect for them after being friends with some.

General Discussion / Re: 3 Dead in Oregon Mall Shooting
« on: December 12, 2012, 05:02:07 PM »
If we did have CCW and something like this happened, would it be legal to shoot the guy? What would be the appropriate way to do so or what would YOU do?
I believe it would be legal.  You are preventing an aggressor from doing further harm.  Just make sure youre positive the gunman is the aggressor and not a CCW protecting him/herself.  Just try get the story straight in that short amount of time and react accordingly.

General Discussion / Re: 3 Dead in Oregon Mall Shooting
« on: December 12, 2012, 03:01:18 AM »
The worst part oregon is a open carry state. Dont know if the mall was a gun free zone.
I'm sorry but I dont understand open carry. Yea I get it but you also could just get attacked from behind where the aggressor could just neutralize you or your gun first and then do greater harm later.  He/she could take or maybe use your own gun against you. Basically put unwanted attention on yourself. CCW is way more practical IMO.  I spoke with a retired officer once and he said that every hot call they go to is potentially a gun call... they bringing it to one (since it's obviously on their hip). At least with CCW, the potential attacker doesnt know it... until youre pointing it at him/her.

Legal and Activism / Re: Federal judge dismisses suit over isle gun laws
« on: December 12, 2012, 01:49:52 AM »
Well, I'm not sure Mr. Young's lawsuit did any good at all for anyone.  We are already in the court of appeals above him (and further along) with my case challenging CCW.

As far as the money goes, cities do have insurance policies for some of this (as far as I understand), so some judgments may come out of that policy.
I just think if he didn't ask for $2M, there would have been a better chance of winning. Although the court could have just awarded him a CCW permit and no money if they wanted to.  Ah well. I do think if you have a real legitimate reason, l like a crazy violent ex stalking you and threatening you, one should be granted a CCW permit. At least for a certain amount of time like a drivers license and just gotta renew with your grounds. At least that would be the best for both liberals and conservatives.   And im sure most cities are self insured to a certain extent.
