Man, what a legend. I remember growing up listening to my old man read some of these books to me. It's honestly what gave me some of my first thoughts of joining the military. Rest in peace, brother!

What an absolute dumbass. I feel for him, I do, he'll have to live with that for the rest of his life and I'm sure that ain't easy, but damn dude. I am like a sloth with guns around the family. The wife knows how to use them, but hugging while strapped? How about you take 3 steps back and say, hang on, lemme put my LOADED HANDGUN away before we continue. These things are not belt buckles. SMH. What a tragedy.

Anyone know what HPD's Active Shooter response is?

Wait outside until the shooter runs out of rounds and then send in the SWAT team since no one was able to stop it since nobody can (legally) carry in this state. Everyone would do well to checkout GunsSaveLives.net. Almost 1000 documented stories of how violent crimes have been prevented or stopped because of a citizen carrying a handgun or being armed in the own home. Liberals can't fathom a gun being used for good. They cannot wrap their minds around it. I love reading those stories because they are documented reasons the throw at the face of a liberal when they tell you that more guns = more crime.

Then I tell them about the Harvard Law School study (yes, Harvard, that hallowed liberal stomping ground) that was published last month that showed a reverse correlation of what they expected when examining gun laws vs. crime, meaning the locations with more gun laws had more violent crime and the locations with less gun laws had less crime. Initiate head explosion sequence in 3...2...1....it's hysterical. "Does. Not. Compute. Guns. Are. Bad. Follow. The. Other. Sheep." They're like damn robots man. My favorite question to ask a liberal is this:

Me: "Your entire family is locked in a room with a convicted violent murderer and he is not restrained. He will kill them. You are allowed to give them one weapon to defend themselves with. You can choose a hammer, a baseball bat or a gun. What is your choice and why?"
Them: "Well, your example...I mean it's entirely unrealistic."
Me: "Yeah cause violent criminals never walk into people's homes while their families are sleeping. Keep living in a dream world, pal."

You see where it goes, the head explosion thing, the robot voice deal, etc.

HPD is a fine organization and I'm sure have solid plans for something as terrible as a mass shooting in this state.

What a bunch of double standard loving money grubbing hippies. The left pledges allegiance to Almighty Mother Earth and all the while they've discovered that global warming is actually...global cooling! Idiots. Want to see a liberal's head explode? Start talking facts and not emotions or feelings. They won't know what to do. They can't possibly comprehend something being factual. This state pledges to go green in the name of saving the planet and then we have officials that destroy wetland habitats and give waivers for the birds that are being killed as a result of windmill usage. Man those windmills look so beautiful against the Ko'olaus (see: sarcasm).

I'm so sick of this state and the single party corrupt Democrat system. Hey, Detroit, how's that 40+ years of Democratic rule going for you? I hear those Unions worked out really well! Hey, Chicago, how's that gun control working out for you? Luckily the strict gun laws prevent murders by criminals who obey the laws! Hey DC, how are your gun laws working out for you? Oh that's right, Anacostia in SE DC is one of the most dangerous places in the world (second to the US House).

I don't like pulling the, "where I'm from" card very often, but gimme a break! Tennessee (and others like it, see: Texas) values small business, capitalism, growth, jobs, innovation, and personal freedoms. This state is so backwards, so one sided, so screwed up that it's difficult to even ride a bicycle around here. A permit for riding a bike? I thought the lady at the Satellite City Hall was yanking my chain. What a joke our state leaders are, I mean really. This place (Hawaii) could do so much better! I'm not a resident, so I don't truly have a dog in the fight, but I'd be fighting tooth and nail to get these clowns replaced. The folks here seem just like the people I grew up around in the Southern US; hardworking, honest, good down to earth folks. And they've all been tricked into the left's trap of broken promises and nice sounding rhetoric. The leaders of this state and its communities are such a joke. It is a tragedy that the residents have to endure the asinine rules and regulations imposed on them by the People's Republic of Hawaii.

My orders can't get here fast enough, good luck with the marsh, the gun laws, having to register for damn near everything, needing the state's permission to do anything of merit or value, making three trips to the police headquarters to buy a long gun, not being allowed to shoot fireworks, and the list goes on and on. I've met so many folks visiting Hawaii that were born here but decided to leave this place, as beautiful and special as it is, because they just couldn't take it anymore and found a state where they could flourish. I see so many people in small business and around town and think, "man this guy or girl is really sharp! They'd do so well in Dallas, Nashville, etc."

Hawaii to me will always be one of the most beautiful places in the world that's been tainted by the rule of amateurs who impose their agendas on everyone from the bike rider to the gun owner.

Something else I do is hit the Print screen key and then go into paint and then click paste. Easiest way to take a screen shot of whatever you're looking. You can then save it as a jpeg or whatever after you've cropped out the edges.

USAA is really good about personal property insurance. They don't need to appraise them. You can manage it all online. They do need the make model and SN but the deductible for my policy is $100. I have other things like my wife's wedding ring, camera, etc. Their regular renter's insurance only covers up to $2000 in guns. So if you have more than $2k (like say 30 guns would be) it'd be wise to add them to a personal policy. Huge bummer for whoever had this happen to them. Also for about $200 you can get a four camera IR system that records to a 500gb DVR. Multiple layers of protection/deterrence is the safest bet IMO.

Sure there are good deal fares here and there but by and large you're paying some good coin to go anywhere on any airline in Hawaii. Not that I can blame them for high prices. The profit margins for airlines is razor thin.

My point exactly. Monopolies kill growth and jobs. Period. I'm thinking it's time for a change.

This is the perfect example of why competition is good and monopolies are not. Competition almost always benefits the consumer. It leads to higher quality and lower prices. It's a damn shame that the state let this go the way it did. It's such a no brainier. Group of islands. Boat goes between them and carries people. People buy tickets and boat owner makes money. Owner hires more people as business grows. Pretty basic really.

Wow. I see why Lingle pushed for this thing to go through. The SF created jobs and opportunities and the liberal govt screwed up the whole thing. It's pretty clear the EIS was the (very heavy) straw that broke the camel's back. It is such a shame. Other countries and states don't require the huge amounts of red tape. The use of logic here would have gone a long way.

For the guys that were here when it was operational: what was their fare structure like? How much did it cost to take a vehicle?

This was my thought exactly.  It's a boat.  It floats on the water.  There are literally thousands of them in and around the Hawaiian Islands already; what was the big environmental impact concern with this?

100% concur with this. I get the chance to fly around the islands on a weekly basis and you are correct...there are thousands of boats out there every single day. Everything from the Matson cargo ships, to oil tankers, to barges. So you're telling me two more ferries are going to break the Hawaiian environment so much that they should be shut down? It's good to learn from your mistakes, but it's better to learn from others'. I am convinced that this could be successfully reattempted.

So....for about $1mm someone could buy a decently used, 150 person/50 car capacity catamaran ferry. Basically a smaller version of the super. For guys that have lived here awhile, with lessons learned from the super, how realistic would it be to attempt it again? I'm thinking much smaller scale (small ships = less environmental impact and considerably lower overhead). The smaller boat means less risk. I think the super was on the order of $200mm just for the ship. The wheels (or props) are beginning to turn in my entrepreneurial brain...

^The airlines and the federal govt do the same thing. I just don't see why Hawaii is any different than any other group of islands in the world. And yes, BHO is proud I'm sure, to see its demise. I'll never understand it myself, and I'm sure HAL and others paid big bucks to put up some major opposition.

I understand (for the most part) why these guys went out of business. Hawaii seems like an extremely tough place to start and run a business. The political and regulatory environment must be the two big killers. But I still do not understand why no one has tried to revive the Hawaii Superferry. I've been blessed to travel all over the world and EVERY island nation or archipelago I have been to has established, cheap, reliable ferry service. Why is Hawaii any different? I know the EIS wasn't done properly (or at all) and the whale lovers were pretty upset about it, but what gives? Are there not whales in every other part of the world that are threatened by ships? Could a new EIS not be completed IOT get this thing going again? It's just disappointing to see the rest of the world doing it right when it comes to inter island transportation and Hawaii is "missing the boat." Pun intended. You're welcome.

The Obama administration is waging a (successful) war on gun owners. Like any war, the tactics change and evolve. When he couldn't accomplish his primary tasking which was to get enough congressional support for a renewed AWB or universal background check system, he had successfully accomplished his secondary tasking. He is helped in accomplishing this tasking by the media who is at his beck and call. They worship him and he can do no wrong. So he says, "guns are bad," and they immediately run countless stories on how evil guns are and even worse: gun owners.

Wherever you work, it is probably considered unacceptable to smoke in your office. If you work from home, good for you. Yes, smoking is actually bad for your health, so please don't compare the health aspects of cigarette smoking to gun ownership. Anyways, over the years we were bombarded with anti-smoking campaigns. You used to be able to smoke on board commercial aircraft and it was considered normal and completely acceptable. Now, if you smoke within 50 feet of any building, you are considered a "jerk", and in some places a criminal. Laws can be passed or not, but the stigma we all carry is only getting worse. Obama's war on the gun owner (and Christian, and business owners) is going ok for him, unfortunately for us. In the minds of many we are members of society that are on the fringe. Gun ownership is starting to be considered somewhat faux pas, much like driving a diesel truck, smoking in public, or not recycling. I don't really care about all that crap, but what I do care about are the liberal judges being appointed by BO that rule based on emotion and how they perceive the case, not based on law. Once they set legal precedents, those cases are on the books and they essentially become law.

What an asinine issue they've created for themselves. Not taking their own forms is just dumb. I got all the respect in the world for the HPD and the job they do, but come on guys. Not taking the forms from your own website? Gimme a break.

Perhaps I am missing something, but wouldn't bringing two printed copies solve the issue?
