General Discussion / Another Gun Shop in HILO!!!!!
« on: November 06, 2012, 10:05:45 PM »
Oh yes....it's true.

NP Firearms on Kalakaua Street; right below Kalakaua Park.

Info from the Tribune Herald:

Husband-wife team Ilan and Michelle Kariv, an Israeli couple, aim to bring a new dimension to gun sales at NP Firearms. They moved to Hawaii Island four years ago after successfully establishing a business on Oahu building and operating electronic security systems for state facilities. Now they see an opportunity to provide more for the gun-buying public, including a wider variety of firearms for buyers to choose from.

“We’ll have a large variety of guns in all price ranges,” said Michelle Kariv, “including handguns and a wide variety and supply of ammunition.” Ammo, she said, is more difficult to get than the guns themselves. “We really want to have a presence downtown where people can actually see, touch and get a hands-on feel for what they want to buy. From a business standpoint, it’s the right thing to do. We’ll have a large, diverse inventory, scopes, bags, red dots (laser aiming devices), vests and safety equipment,” Ilan said.

North Pacific Firearms is located at 104 Kalakaua St. Call 933-GUNS (4867) or visit online at www.npfirearms.com.

Also related: Stueb’s Guns & Ammo, 7 Lukia St., unit 202, can be reached at 854-1981, or online at www.hiloguns.com.

Enjoy and BE SAFE!!

They are a great pair of gentlemen! Please visit and help them expand. Sean and Josh Stueber opened "Stueb’s Guns and Ammo" upstairs at 7 Lukia St. in Hilo. Josh grad from Hilo High with my daughter...good Hawaii Island guys.

Yes, yes they're above the Veterinary Office and....next to After Dark Video. But hey, Guns, Pets n Porn in one stop?   :wtf:  :shaka:  Ok, maybe that's a bit too much....blame the Marine in me.

:stopjack: I put a pistol on consignment and it sold very quickly. Yes, they have a small selection of firearms and ammo; however they just started! With the internet and quick ordering, be an akamai purchaser. I think we should be reasonable in what we expect they'd have on hand...meaning I don't think they ought to carry some huge selection of inventory...what's popular and what moves, a few OMG eye candy and supplies.

Oh, to add to the mix, another shop opened in Hilo: NP Firearms on Kalakaua Street right below Kalakaua Park.

Have fun n BE SAFE!

General Discussion / Re: Police tape closing off Paauilo range?
« on: October 17, 2012, 08:52:48 PM »
Hi 2a Ohana,

The range is at the 37 mile marker in Pauuilo. On the Hamakua Highway, turn left at the Pauuilo Solid Waste Transfer station sign. It's less than 100 yards past the dump.
It is not club run, please malama aina and shoot pono....police your opala, bring an extra garbage bag or two and pick up anything else not attached to the ground or not from nature....
I live in Keaau, and I would not suggest you jump on a moped or scooter...that 37 miles is measured from downtown Hilo, btw.
Suggestions:
-practice extremely polite and respectful range etiquette, especially if you're sharing the area.
-no facilities, so "go" before.
-go early, there is not much room,
-I bring an extra table to stage and set up on...there is only one, (pretty well made) make shift bench.
-bring water, food and mosquito spray, those buggas swarm!
-if more than one or two of you go, a couple of chairs doesn't hurt.

Anyone else?

From the Hyatt Regency in Minnesota. My wife and I were there for our last residency for school....great hotel by the way.

Even though they are a concealed carry state, businesses have the ability to post such announcements just inside the entrance to their establishments.

It still begs the question, if you are "concealed carry," how would they even know? There must be major legal and liability issues for you if a handgun incident occurs?

But.....I just couldn't resist!

Legal and Activism / Re: 2012 legislative session
« on: January 28, 2012, 09:26:26 PM »
Hi all.

I'm a bit worried about the verbage at the end of Senate Bill 2995 that states "provided that, if injured, the offender is ultimately convicted of a crime." What happens if the "injured" isn't convicted? Does the "Castle Doctrine" also have this disclaimer? I don't want to sound paranoid, but I won't be thinking about a conviction if I'm forced to draw down on someone (God forbid...no one wants to go there).

Thoughts?

General Discussion / Pauillo Range No Ka Oi
« on: December 18, 2011, 06:48:38 PM »
The Pauillo Range is No Ka Oi!!

It's been about a year since I was able to shoehorn some time and go shooting. We pulled up to the range and it was beautiful! It's been moved/weedwacked, cleared a little more on the sides, most shotgun casings and brass were policed, there was another long shooting bench installed (about 8 foot long), a 6 foot long table for all your gear and gun cases, and a garbage can. Plus, there were three target stands downrange, just waiting for the next set of shooters to hang their favorite targets and have some safe and responsible shooting!!! I even left my home made target stand set up...big enough for two silhouette targets!

The range sign was updated and said no glass targets, appliances or electronics, so I was glad to see some sort of limit on what can be brought and shot at...

My oldest son is a 1st Lt with the Marines, they just returned from Afghanistan 2 weeks ago (his 2nd tour), and his wife let him come up for a short visit. So he, my youngest son (19) and I loaded up this morning and headed out. We had both my Tactical Innovations 6.8, theTaurus PT-1911AL .45 and about 300 rounds of ammo for each! It was beautiful weather, didn't rain and had those crisp and breezy winds.

The biggest bummer was I forgot the damn mosquito spray! So be warned, those Pauillo ear screamers are spot on and never miss their target! If you get sweet blood and don't have any spray, your one itchy mutha-scratcha!

I took off the expensive Trijicon and dropped on a new (cheap) NC-Star 3-9/40 illuminated scope; and my son got is sighted in after 12 shots downrange. While he consistently made tight 1.5" groupings, my yougnest and I proved that lack of range time is proportionate to 4 inch groups off to the left due to poor breathing and snap trigger pulls! lol....After about another 40 shots each we tightened up the groups but mine were still an inch to the left, but still in the 9/10 ring. Interestingly, my youngest shot better groupings on rapid fire, than on the slow single shot placements....damn kid!!!

We then moved to a walking pistol course we laid out. Three target about 25 feet apart placed in a zig-zag so we could be moving downrange. That is some tough shooting, for sure. It's been a long time since I did tactical walking, it gets right back at your thighs and back after a few minutes!

We left after about 5 hours of shooring and went to Honoka'a for some lunch....a great day for sure.

Firearms and Accessories / Tactical holster Q
« on: August 28, 2011, 03:54:31 PM »
Hi team.

I've checked and checked but can not find a manufacture who has a tactical (RH) thigh holster, with spring-thumb break, for my Taurus PT-1911 WITH light/lazer. She's not fancy; standard styled 1911, 5" barrel with the lower rail.

I've got one that nicely holds my pistol without the light/lazer, so I can strap and move.

I see choke manufacturers with holsters that accomodate rail mounted gear, but not my model.....I stay frustrated! I forget how many I've written and asked if they have or intend to make, all no joy!

I figured with the 100th anniversary they'd all be scrambling to make holsters for pistols with an accessory rail.

Hi team!!!

I joined HDF, and donated....as I'm on Hawaii Island, I wait with baited breath to see the results of the suit.

When (not IF), when HDF is successful, it stands to reason the other islands should also be "next in line" for HDF legal action. Does anyone know (or have an opinion) if HDF is concurrently moving forward on the outer islands? or going to wait until the Honolulu suit is settled?

My manao is to file at all counties within a short timeframe as each Chief of Police has the decision making power. Who knows, Maui and Hawaii Island might be "easier" given the number of hunters we have with permits, etc. Firearms are seen differently in rural areas compared to urban.

Where do we get statisitics (HPD, FBI, etc) covering violent crimes against persons, property, etc. that is broken down by respective counties?

Aloha, and Semper Fi,

Frank/ SgtCUSMC

General Discussion / Re: Big Island shooting range?
« on: August 15, 2011, 05:38:28 PM »
Howzit Ah Sook.

Yes, the Pauuilo "range" is still there and available; I've been there several times; last time was about 5 months ago. It is right off the highway, next to the Pauuilo Transfer station, and right off the Old Mamalahoa highway; so expect traffic in your background and right side periphery. It is small, with one mounted bench in between two trees; there isn't alot of room for multiple shooters though I always bring an extra shooting bench and table, just in case.  I've lucked out and we were able to shoot without trying to shoehorn in with anyone else.

I'm guessing the length as I didn't measure it all the way...but I think it's only about 200-250 feet (65-85 yards at it's deepest point). We set up a bunch of pistol targets and a silhouette at 150 feet and had some fun. There are no burms, it looks mostly like a small landslide spot in a semicircular shapoe with the fairly high (20-25 feet?) back wall collecting all the bullets.

I'd say it is a gentlemans range; meaning bring alot of humility, a friendly smile and attitude, a sharp mind and good spirit. Oh, a couple trash bags and creature comforts...like losquito repellant. I don't police all the brass, just mine as I reload. I have picked up the plastic shotgun casings though, they really make the aina look messy. There isn't a lua so plan around that. First come first fire so I'd suggest going early; If someone is there ask how long they think they'll be, you never know.

I've shot at Manukaa (about the 83 mm out of Hilo. It's a haul...) you can go to either side. I don't shoot there anymore; as said, it is federal property, there are trails and ohana riding all kinds of off road vehicles. There are makeshift areas, again basically shooting intot he side of a rockslide spot so you and whomever your with should practice  high situation awareness. It's much messier than Pauuilo, there is usually choke trash and we easily fill 3-4 55 gal bags. It gets hot, again bring your creature comforts. I've never been stopped and questioned, but that's a risk you need to assess.

I'd say that if that helps bring a measure of comfort for pops, geeve em!

Im not sure about which branch your son's with, but anykind of training is good training. Great job for being there for him; I also have 2 hanai/step sons, one is an Army/Afghan vet, getting ready to go again in 4 mos.

My son left with the rest of his 1/3 Lava Dogs last month; his 2nd tour to Helmand Provence. My dad is a Marine vet, I'm a Marine vet, and now my oldest son is out there for God, Corps and Country. We've all been through this. Since I live in Hilo, I flew over to spend the last few days with him, his wife and my moo'puna...anyway, he and I spent some good times wala'au, shared thoughts and exchanged gifts.

The Corps is very tight about bringing personal gear so we honored that. He soooo wanted to take my Taurus PT 1911 with him.

Anyway, best of luck to your son; I'll keep him in my Prayers.

Strategies and Tactics / Tactical Pistol training in San Antonio Texas
« on: February 02, 2011, 10:58:17 AM »
Howzit team.

I will be in San Antonio Texas this coming September, and want to take a tactical pistol training class(s) from an established business with certified instructors. I'm doing the requisite internet searches and have found a couple that look really promising; however I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has FIRST HAND knowledge/PERSONAL recommendations?

Sorry, but I'm not looking for the "I know so and so who said this and that is really good" information.

Mahalo,

Sgt. C

Any kokua is appreciated.

General Discussion / Re: Range on the Big I ...
« on: December 09, 2010, 01:57:56 PM »
Howzit Moku.

Can you give me directions to the Pauuilo range? Is there anything else we should know about access, etc.?

I'd be amiss if I didn't suggest great caution shooting anywhere on the mountains especially within any of the Volcano federal property, even during a hunting season/session. I've not gone for a couple years, but back in 05-06, friends and I went up Mauna Kea via Kaumana about 4 -5 times. I don't remember where, just a few of those trail/roads about 15-20 miles or so up the road (still in the winding/twisting area), and another time up the access roads a little below the 9000 foot welcome center. Nearly every time we were approached and I think we were left alone because someone in our group had a good, solid relationship with the officer.

We should also mention the unofficial, very unofficial spot down in Manuka, about the 87 mile marker. I think it's federal property, but I forget who can/might show up as law enforcement. It's right off the highway, and I've shot on both the makai and mauka areas. It's off road, about a couple hundred yards; a 4x4 is best due to the unimproved access roads. A car will make it, just be smart. There is nothing there, so bring everything you'll need. As it's NOT supervised, take great caution as motorcycles, off roaders and ATV are out n about. Please bring extra trash bags and malama aina, there are irresponsible a$$hole$ and sometimes it's a mess. The good part, safety wise, if there are several areas with huge natural berms as backdrops. I've shot there about 4 - 5 times per year and have never seem any patrol of any sort. Maybe I was lucky...

Moki...bust out the directions, brudda!

General Discussion / Re: Isle gun death rates lowest in U.S.
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:13:34 PM »
I called the NRA last week, and gave them the article info, staff writer name, etc.

This article is very misleading, as it tries to tie in strict gun restrictions result in "low death rates," which it conveniently doesn't define but leaves that to the readers imagination.

Is it saying strict gun laws results in "low death rates" is in low murder/death rates? Well, criminals, not law abiding citizens, are murdering. They then go on to compare our low ownership to death rate, to states with high ownership to high death rate, gleefully claiming high ownership equates to high death rates..."more guns equals more deaths." Well, maybe, maybe not...but we're talking about legally owned guns versus the availabiliy of illegal guns favored by criminals. NO WHERE would their conclusion of "more guns equals more deaths" hold up. They'd have to account for every other variable out there. Sorry, smoke n mirrors and just not true.

What I think we should keep in mind is NOT the low number of deaths, but the number of murders and other violent crimes that DON'T occur in Hawaii. I encourage everyone to read Lott's book "More Guns Less Crime." It's pretty dry, filled with statistics and charts. But if you can skip over these and read the way he ties in gun ownership, it's an easy read. Where there is high gun ownershp, especially where CCP is legal, there are low violent crime numbers. There is an increase in property crimes, though...attributed to a shift in illegal activities, criminals aren't that stupd and know if there's a chance you're carrying, they'd rather target your car in the mall parking lot or shoplift.

My 2 cents? A combination of reasonable gun laws (not including our CCP situation) and the lack of a more organized criminal element...we're just too far away to be caught up in interstate trafficing problems.

I was in the market for a 6.8 and was futtin around with a couple ordering options when my FFL called me. A 6.8 deal he was doing fell through and he offered it to me...so I jumped on it. She wasn't everything I wanted, but it was complete and on island....everything else was bolt ons so I didn't sweat it, though I paid more in the end.

I had my FFL complete assembling the upper and lower last year, and quickly put 20 rounds through her. She kicks just a hair more than the .223...that's it. A pleasure to drive! Honestly, I lucked out, right place at the right time. I've since added a 3-9x40 illuminated tactical short scope, quad rail and grip-pod, vortex flash hider. I've got the Crimson Trace lazer/light combo on the way, then I'm pau.

Ammo is a bitch, locally it's running $45-60 for a box of 20! I've mostly purchased ammo when I or ohana is on the mainland. Each adult can bring 11# in checked baggage, I came back last week and spend $20 per box...such a great deal for 200 rnds. I've got "XXXX" rounds locked up, and hate to think how much I spent; however I now have a reload set and will doing my own once I get out and hit the range.

Howzit.

New member here, I found the thread on Hawaii Free Press. I live on Hawaii Island, Hilo side; former Marine, father, hunter, shooter, 2A and CCP advocate. Not a firearm freak per se, I don't want or have a stockpile of firearms, just what I cut my teeth on and feel are good to go for home and personal defense.

I started a thread for fellow 6.8 SPC owners; and gave a shout out to chrome...in Kona, re: his Bushmaster. I'm looking for an "inexpensive" M4 version for the wife. Yes, she can shoot well, as can my keiki.

Nuff 4 now,
