Not sure how far without repeaters, never had a partner to test with.  As far as what I did, I used repeaters almost exclusively since it was kind of a gathering place for people.  I just load up the whole repeater book on the radio and scan all known repeaters.

Also, there used to be the WH6FM repeater connected to the win system.  I think that was on some sort of SSFM(?) building or something near Honolulu.  I was able to get the signal real well across salt lake, pearl city.  Although, I had problems putting a good signal into the repeater from salt lake, even with a higher gain car-mount antenna.

as far as communicating, i think ive had a good experience with the Baofeng UV-5R, and Its good enough that i wouldnt change it.

However, my dream radio for emergencies is the Yaesu FT1DR.  its got a lot of features that are helpful for emergencies, e.g. gps, multi channel spectrum monitoring.  costs a lot though.

But, no handheld will beat the the range of a car/mobile station.  i think the best setup is to have a handheld that can be set up with a car radio as a cross-link repeater to launch your signal a lot farther than the handheld can do on its own.

wooo, he charged 300/wk:

$300.00 in 1970 had the same buying power as $1,854.50 in 2014.
Annual inflation over this period was 4.23%.

I'm only addressing the part of your comment quoted above

Thanks punaperson, that's good to know that the HRA does try to update their position on their testimony when they have a better understanding.  It would definitely make sense if they tried to update it on this one.  I'll have to pay more attention to the next legislative session so I can add in my own testimony to bills that need it.

ahh, there they are, thanks!  yea, just some late night reading, haha.  I guess I'm just starting to get familiar with how laws are written and considered.  Thankfully a lot of folks spoke up and shot this thing down.  Looks like it got deferred, but not killed.  Guess we might have to deal with a comeback.

Not sure if this has been discussed, but I couldn't find a thread on this proposed senate bill:

Tracking: http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=SB&billnumber=2257&year=2014
Text: http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2014/bills/SB2257_.pdf

At the very least, it makes provisions for properly licensed gunsmiths.  But, from what I comprehended, it goes as far as criminalizing having/selling/building something like a 3D printed gun looking object, or a gun part looking thing.

I can just imagine someone hitting print on a gun §134(a)(1) or ammo §134(a)(2) looking thing on their 3D printer, and getting hit with a class C felony.  This is a steep jump from something like Honolulu ordinance 03-24 regarding displaying of firearm replicas in public, which results in a $1000 fine.

You could probably stretch this law to cover a effective ban on gun looking toys and airsoft guns as well §134(b)(1), §134(b)(2) .  They sure as heck look like guns, and they're all manufactured with a process which definitely involved a computer for design/simulation/injection mold design and digitally assisted injection molding technique with plastic!  not to mention any molds for die cast parts, or for high end airsoft guns: CNC'ing of metal.  Hell, even generic screws used for firearms were digitally designed and used some sort of digitally controlled machine to facilitate or run the mass production 'recipe'.

I am a bit confused as to why the HRA endorsed the bill.  Perhaps HRA overlooked the prohibition on gun part or ammo shaped things?  HRA's name does carry the weight of all its members, but I'm glad to see an overwhelming majority of opposers in the testimony who were concerned well before I learned about this.

welcome to the forums!  I'm not an expert, but are you looking to buy a handgun, or just interested in particular information?

I just got my first handgun at the beginning of the year, and have been shooting almost every other week since.  Before that, I've shot a wide variety of different handguns, rifles, and even full auto guns (AK's, Thompson, M16, M249).

yeah, i can see that happening.  poor driving performance however, isnt directly proportional to a person deciding to defend themselves or others.  although i see your point that alcohol has an effect, even with just a drink or two.  based on my 9 years of alcohol experience, i'm not convinced yet that all reasoning goes out the window with light (and responsibly managed) social drinking.  rate of consumption is what seems to have the most effect to degrade decision making, versus a non-zero quantity.

nice, i have my technician license.   for a while, WH6FM from the big island had an awesome WIN System repeater set up on Oahu at 444.725MHz.  dunno where it went recently , but it was cool to talk with him and folks from all over the world on my cheapo Baofeng UV-5R.  i'm thinking of setting up my own WIN repeater

Hmm, disarming LEO's while just because they've consumed any amount of alcohol seems a bit too broad.  I'd think they'd need to be able to protect themselves at all times, even off duty and having a few drinks.

There's gotta be a way to state it more like, LEO's shall not be intoxicated while carrying a firearm, defined by BAC above x percent.

This would still allow LEO's to be off duty, be armed, and responsibly consume alcohol.  At the same time, it would make them think twice about getting intoxicated while carrying around a firearm.  When they're intoxicated, they better not be caught with a firearm, because it might not just be a fellow officer taking their gun.  Heck, armed and belligerent/intoxicated LEO's put their non-LEO friends in danger of a felony if they disarm the belligerent off-duty LEO.

Also, if we ever get CCW for civs, I'm thinking the above statement is a reasonable to apply to CCW holders too.  This would make civs think twice about getting intoxicated and get sloppy with protecting their carry gun.  But at the same time, still allows law abiding civs to enjoy responsible drinking while carrying.
