General Discussion / Re: Some reccomendations

I've shot a 9mm 1911 and loved it.  Seems like a good compromise of having the 1911 feel and cheap 9mm ammo.

I was just looking into IIIA backpack inserts, and saw they have a buy one get one (BOGO) sale.  Rifle plates are also 30% off.    :wtf:

Just wanted to share the Aloha. Shootz

General Discussion / Re: Handgun Red Dot Study - Sage Dynamics

The price of the Trijicon RMR Adjustible LED model has come down a lot in the last year.  Burris makes a great mini red dot as well.  I ran one on my 12ga shotgun and a friend has one on his MOS Glock.  Mine worked great even after firing boxes of 3in slugs and a bruised up shoulder!

Did Trijicon say what happened to the sight?  I don't own any Trijicon optics, but I always thought they were pretty good quality.  Seems like the MRO has gotten good reviews.

No idea.  The solar panel seems like a gimmick and makes the electronics overly complicated.  I loved the huge field of view but wished it was lighter and ran off strictly a battery.....probably why the MRO was created.

My Trijicon SRS crapped out twice and got fixed twice for just the cost of shipping it to Trijicon.  Relatively low 5.56 round count each time it shut down.  I treated it just like how I treat all my other firearms and optics...   I sold it after it got fixed the second time.

Also had a Primary Arms T-1 clone shut off when it was being used on a 9mm AR.  Amazon got me a replacement which now sits on an airsoft gun.

A Trijicon 1-4x Accupoint plus an Aero Precision ultralight scope mount comes out 6 oz lighter than an Eotech + magnifier set up.   ;D

The Aimpoint Pro has a pretty chunky tube that blocks a lot of your peripheral view.  I had one and sold it pretty quickly.  I think there are better choices out there, unless you need something that can take a really good bashing.  I'm a Trijicon fanboy.  I own an ACOG 4x, Accupoint 1-4x, RMR, and have owned a SRS.  Unfortunately the MRO is the only one I've never handled yet.   I've used Burris and Primary Arms optics before and they're great too.  Out of your three choices I would go MRO.

I would be more skeptical of someone who admits they never get depressed.  What dreamland are they living in and how did they get there??

I picked up a Surefire Sidekick keychain light.  I keep it with my car keys and use it daily.  Lasts a long time on one charge, and I just charge it once in a while on the drive home.  3 brightness levels which are perfect.  Surprisingly powerful light.  You can program the light to start off at the dimmest setting (default) or brightest setting.  Price is pretty up there, but for how often I use it and how convenient it is - totally worth it.

General Discussion / Re: TiN Coating Locally?
« on: May 08, 2017, 10:58:20 AM »
A number of years ago on a different forum, some guys were asking who can do chrome plating locally (motorcycle wheels).  The answer was nobody because of the hazardous chemicals required for the process.  Since there haven't been any answers to your questions yet, I'm going to assume its the same way for TiN coatings.

Firearms and Accessories / Seek Thermal Reveal Pro
« on: April 27, 2017, 03:08:20 PM »
Ordered from DVOR.com.  I was super excited for this hand held imager after doing a lot of research on it vs. the Leupold LTO and the FLIR Scout TK.  This unit as the best refresh rate out of the three, as well as great resolution for the money.

Unit came in and was defective - Completely unusable.  It's as if the thermal camera could not focus.  Requested for a RMA # from the manufacture thru their website.  Received an auto-response that my request would be handled within 3-5 days.  While waiting, I found a number of negative reviews about Seek Thermal's customer service.  I was pretty nervous.

After waiting 3 days, I contacted DVOR.com and they instantly provided me with a pre-paid FedEx shipping label.  They also said there is no restocking fee on defective items.  The only negative thing is they can only do store credit, no refunds or exchanges.   Not a big deal for me at all since I buy stuff from them regularly.

I suspect the Reveal Pro would've worked great for me if it worked properly.  The software and menu system worked great and was easy to use.  The frame rate was indeed fast.  When going from an A/c office to the blazing hot outdoors, the heat range auto-corrected quite fast.  However, it's been 5 days now, still no response.  I suppose I could've called Seek Thermal directly, but how long would I have to wait for the unit to come back??  Now I have to decide between the FLIR or the Leupold.  Any suggestions?

1. Inside my office.   2. Outside  3 & 4. My truck

The M&P 15 has very favorable reviews on youtube.  You should also check out Aero Precision's complete rifles.  Their AC-15 is $560 on Brownells right now....

General Discussion / Re: Laser sights for Handguns
« on: April 18, 2017, 08:17:46 AM »
A lot of those cheap pistol lasers you get off Amazon don't even hold up for airsoft use.  They don't hold zero, the red lasers are very weak, and the batteries die pretty quick.  I've also seen the same cheap pistol lasers sold for over $100...I think the sells are trying to fool people into thinking the high price means high quality...

Even my laserlyte laser training cartridge couldn't hold zero just from dry firing it, and it wasn't cheap.  The only one I would trust would be the Surefire X400 light/laser combo.  No experience with Crimson Trace, but I don't really see many people with them.

I heard you can rapid fire and shoot from a holster at Honolulu Firearms' range.  You do have to buy their ammo so I can see it getting pretty expensive.  How is it at X-Ring's new range?

Compared to my Benelli, the O/U shotguns are slimmer, longer, and weighted in such a way that they swing side to side really smoothly.  The weight also absorbs the recoil so follow up shots are really quick.  I don't know for sure, but I also suspect everyone feels more relaxed and comfortable hanging around a group of break-action shotguns that are clearly made safe.  Even tho my benelli action is locked open, I still make sure I don't muzzle sweep anyone just out of habit.

General Discussion / Re: Glock 43 or M&P Shield for CCW
« on: March 16, 2017, 08:07:18 AM »
Thanks for the info about ammo.  Never thought about that.  I carry Hornady CD 124 gr in my Glock 19.  In NV I carry 15+1 in tbe gun and a spare 15 rd mag.  It is ok for normal use, but at the ConExpo we walked 26.7 miles in 3 days according to the pedometer.  It started to get uncomfortable after a few hours whereas I never noticed it before while wearing my CC holster for 8 or 9 hours and not doing a lot of walking and standing.  My daughter and I both liked the Shield a little more and it is a very reliable gun also.  I need to get a lighter and smaller gun for extended CC.

I walked about 21 miles in the 3 days I was at the ConExpo....I can't imagine CC anything during that show.

I'm just getting into skeet with a few friends.  Its a nice change from just shooting static targets all day.  Everyone that I've met is super nice and helpful.

I saw someone shooing an AR15 pistol the other week.  It looked super cool until I saw how he had to reload it.   I felt sorry for the people shooting in the stalls beside him....7" barrel with a stupid loud muzzle brake.   :shaka:

There's a lot of rules that don't make practical sense (ok to shoot rifle caliber pistols but not pistol caliber rifles...) but they are made that way to keep it fair across the board.  I don't think the range officers want to get into an argument or approve every firearm that comes into question.

The Sig P320 was high on my "to buy" list before last November's election.  Ended up going with different guns, but I have heard a lot of good things about the P320.  I know a few people who own them and they've offered to let me try them out, but just never got around to trying the gun myself.  I also wouldn't mind trying the VP9 along side with the P320 and the PPQ and Glocks that I currently own.  I have an M&P 45, but the rest are 9s.

Will be interesting to see how things shake out once this gets rolling, as in guns actually being put into use.  Wonder if there will be Beretta/M9 diehards.   :P

I've shot the H&K VP9, P320, and 92A1 side by side.  I own a M&P 9.  To me, the VP9 was clearly the most comfortable in my hands, had the best feeling trigger and I shot the tightest groups with.  My first thought was that it puts my M&P 9 to shame.  The one problem I had was riding it's slide catch.  The SIG had a weird feeling trigger, can't really explain it.  The 92A1 would be pretty good if it didn't have the slide mounted safety.
