Reloading / Re: The Gold Dot Project-Part 1
« on: January 23, 2015, 04:13:43 PM »
I put together some Speer Gold Dot 115 gr. with once fired Federal 9mm,  5.5 gr. Unique and WW pistol primers. Shot well in my Springfield XDm 3.8. Whole box of 50 held black at 25 yards at Kokohead. No jams. Hope never to have to use this except on paper.

Legal and Activism / Re: Baker win at the 9th CCA - What now?
« on: November 14, 2014, 09:37:38 AM »
The Baker case was remanded back to the Hawaii Federal District Court many months ago. Hasn't the time period  to request the panel decision be heard en blanc before the entire 9th ended? If so it's a done deal and we only need Judge Kay to hear the case on remand.

General Discussion / Re: Bullet found at Queen's Gate subdivision
« on: November 01, 2013, 09:43:40 PM »
On Sunday morning Oct. 27 at approximately 9:30 am a bullet was reported to have gone through the kitchen window of a residence in Queen’s Gate. The incident was discussed at the Tuesday night Oct 29 Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board meeting.  The home owner presented the details in a very polite and open-minded manner.  He did not make any accusation that the bullet had come from the Koko Head Range, but expressed a definite concern as to safety  if the bullet had come from the range. Board member Greg Knudsen went on a tangent about how nothing is done to make the range safer. Board member Paige Altonn cautioned not to blame the range without proof. She was rudely interrupted by Knudsen.

Via a photo,  the bullet appeared to be a .308 FMJBT but can't say for sure. A report to the police was made. Word is police did come by the range late  Sunday afternoon to investigate. Details maybe forth coming.

The Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board postponed any more discussion on the matter until their next monthly meeting when more information becomes available.  Overall, it was thought that the Board handled the matter quite well at this point without any prejudice.  There were no anti-gun comments made.

Glad to hear the shooting sport community is rallying around the Radford Rifle team. And happy to see the Hawaii Historic Arms Assn. jumping in. Heard they are sending a  fat donation check. Keeping young people involved in our sport is beyond critical. All those supporting Radford deserve a high five.

General Discussion / Re: Registration and BP Revolver
« on: August 04, 2013, 09:59:54 AM »
You are correct, black powder revolvers and cartridge conversion cylinders do not need to be registered in Hawaii. But once you place the cartridge cylinder into the revolver it becomes an unlawful unregistered hand gun.

While you do not need to register black power revolvers it can get weird. I know of someone who had a temporary restraining order (TRO) slapped on him by his ex.. He had to turn in all his firearms and ammo to HPD. He also turned in a black powder revolver. Took a few years but he was able to get all his stuff back. But when HPD returned the guns  they issued permits. So now his black power revolver is registered.  I suspect getting this off registration will be difficult and unsure what is the procedure if the pistol is sold. I think HPD messed up and should have just return the revolver and issue permits for the other stuff as need and required by law.

Legal and Activism / Re: Legality of AR mags
« on: July 05, 2013, 05:34:14 PM »
A good number of Hawaii shooters refused to believe Chapter 134 HRS prohibits more than 10 round AR-15 magazines and will continue to used them and even bring them to the range. Good new is HPD does not seem to be actively  enforcing the ban. Bad news is they could at anytime.

What would happen? Get busted, taken into custody at the range and you get a free ride to HPD. I would guess with a clean record bail could be $1000 or less. Bail bonds may  get you out for 10% but better to get a friend or family member to post the $1000. ( you get it back normally after the trial) . You'll be arraigned in district court, plea not guilty and demand a jury trial. Maybe get the public defender to represent you (yes they are good).  If  not expect to pay $5000 for a decent private criminal defense attorney.  What's your down side? One year in jail and $2000 fine and that's for each count. So if you got 5 such mags you could be exposed to 5 years in jail and a $10,000 fine. You win the case and get a not guilty verdict you walk.  All you need to do is pay your lawyer the fee. And a big hassle trying to get back your magazines out of HPD evidence.

So is you strongly believe AR-15 more than 10 round magazines are lawful (they are not) please be prepared for the worst.

Crazy Cat is correct. The cut off date is 1898. But that's the date of manufacture. Not just the model number. But moving even post 1898 firearms intra state i.e. island to island, does not require police registration in the new county.

General Discussion / Re: "TOO OLD FOR FFL"
« on: August 19, 2012, 10:34:10 AM »
If it was actually made before 1898 (not just the model number) you don't need an FFL to bring it in and no need for HPD registration. No need to deal with it as a C&R

The criminal penalty for possession of a magazine that holds more than ten rounds that will fit a pistol is one year in jail and a $1000 fine ( see sec. 134-8(d) HRS) . This applies to each magazine. So if you have ten 15 or 30 round M-1 carbine mags the prosecutor could ask the judge to stack the jail time to ten years and a $10,000 fine . Unlikely,  but that's the potential. It  doesn't matter that the pistol for the magazine isn't legal in Hawaii (assault pistol) or that you don't own any pistols. It's the very magazine itself that's prohibited.

If the more than ten round magazine is inserted in a pistol the crime is a C felony, 5 years jail and NO probation. OK you got a Glock with five hi-cap mags. One in the handgun and the other 4 in the case. You are looking at 5+1+1+1+1 or six years in jail. Even if the magazines are empty.

If inserted in a rifle it still only a one year in jail misdemeanor

It isn't confusing. But it does suck and we are stuck with it.

BTW there is no "grandfather clause" on the magazine ban. Go check Chapter 134 HRS and yes AR and AK more than 10 round mags are unlawful in Hawaii. Sadly plain and simple. But fortunately the police and prosecutors have not gone out of their way to bust people. But the prosecutor will add a mag ban charge if you are  facing other crimes like attempted murder, terroristic threatening abuse of a family member  etc.

Good news?  you have the right to a jury trial.(6th amendment Bill of Rights)

General Discussion / Re: Firearms and apartment rentals
« on: March 16, 2012, 09:31:27 PM »
I am a landlord and the only thing I want is a tenant that will: 1) pay the rent and utility bills on time and in full. 2) not bother or hurt anyone 3) take care of the place and let me know right away if anything needs 'fixin". Don't care about national origin, sexual orientation, age, religion,  handicap etc.   Actually owning a firearm might even be a plus. A gun safe is also a plus. But assuming a tenant isn't  one of those dangerous and irresponsible "Youtube" gun idiots.

Legal and Activism / Re: How Hawaii firearms registration came to be
« on: February 25, 2012, 01:04:33 PM »
Handguns had to be registered in Hawaii going way back, at least just after WW2 and maybe before. But long guns didn't.  The FFL dealer had to register  the long gun but the buyer didn't need to do so. The dealer was suppose to keep a record.

If memory serves me it was the 1994 State legislature that passed amendments to  sec. 134-2 and 3 HRS; essentially requiring buyers to get a one year long gun permit and to register all long guns acquired . This was effective July 1994.

BTW all those thousands of un-registered long guns held pre-July 1994 are not "grandfathered" in when transferred. . Once they are sold or transferred the new owner has to have the permit and must register the long gun. It is a myth that these guns are outside of the system and need not be registered. See sec. 134-2 (a) HRS

My National Match load for the M-1 Garand:   30-06 LC match cases full length resized, Rem. 9.5 large rifle primers, 46.5 gr. IMR 4895 and a 168gr, HPBT match bullet either Sierra or Hornady. Very accurate and performed will at the 600 yard line at Puuloa. But I stopped High Power comp shooting decades ago. But I think this load is still a classic.
