Out of curiosity, why?  Might be bringing a Saiga 7.62x39 and have mags... just wondering why you'd recommend leaving them behind.

He just meant leaving them home as in not taking them with you to the station. Magazines aren't required for registration so why lug down more than you have to? :)

Gotcha.  Coming from a California state of mind, I was thinking they'd be confiscated.  Here in California they would!  :grrr:

Strategies and Tactics / Re: CCW PERMIT HOLDERS LIVE IN A DREAM WORLD
« on: December 25, 2010, 01:03:36 PM »
For what it's worth that video was biased.

1) People who never CCW'd before v. an NRA instructor "gunman"
2) The "gunman" KNEW who was carrying.
3) The CCW person ALWAYS sat in the same chair, in the same location: front & center.

In real life, that would never happen.

I understand you hate CCW for anyone but yourself and LEO but you aren't going to change anyone's minds here nor will you find someone to agree with you.  Go somewhere else where people do agree with you.  Go be with your kind.

Merry Christmas!

Eh all BS aside why you all wanna carry for  (other than protection/2nd Amendment)??

I just turned in my CCW permit today....  It is called the City and County of Honolulu Metropolitan Police Application.  At first i was fustrated by the strict gun laws in Hawaii, but hell it is what it is, plus i always wanted to be a police officer.     Good luck to all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hunting / Re: Hunting Pigs

Has anyone hunted the Puna Forest Reserve?  I'm going to be close to it, and that's probably the most likely place I'd go hunting.

EDIT:  The Rules Regulating Mammal Hunting PDF file (the summarized version) says nothing about Puna Forest Reserve/Wao Kele

OK, so I put my lazy ass in gear and ran a google search  :geekdanc:

First link I found: http://knife-expert.com/hi.txt

In short, you're not allowed to carry "dirk, dagger, blackjack, slug shot, billy, metal knuckles, pistol, or other deadly or dangerous weapon(s)". Further definition of a  "'dangerous weapon' means a dirk, dagger, butterfly
knife, blackjack, slug shot, billy, metal knuckles, or other instrument whose sole design and purpose is to inflict bodily injury or death."

You're also not allowed to make/sell/import a switchblade knife or a butterfly knife (balisong).

Carrying deadly weapons... Any person not authorized by law, who carries concealed upon one's person or within any vehicle... or who is found armed with any dirk, dagger... or other deadly or dangerous weapon, shall be fined... or imprisoned...

"'Other deadly or dangerous weapon' is limited to instruments whose sole design and purpose is to inflict bodily injury or death... A 'diver's knife' is neither a 'dangerous weapon' nor a 'dagger'. 'Deadly and dangerous weapon' is one designed primarily as a weapon or diverted  from normal use and prepared for combat... Cane, butterfly, and kitchen knives are not deadly or dangerous weapons... Sheathed sword cane and wooden knuckles with shark's teeth were 'deadly or dangerous weapons..."

So it seems like it would be legal to carry a fixed blade knife, concealed or unconcealed, as long as it doesn't fall in line with the above defined guidelines.  Since I typically use the knife I own as a tool, and not solely as a "weapon designed to inflict bodily injury and/or death" I (and you) should be good to go.

I'd like to add the above post is not legal counsel and should be used at your own risk.  :shaka:

Firearms and Accessories / Re: WASR
« on: December 17, 2010, 06:03:12 PM »
Im looking to move into the realm of the AK. WASR since they're cheap and if I can find a good one.   Ive heard all of the rumors of canted barrels, front sights, mag wobble.   How do you tell if the barrel or sights are canted?  I mean, obviously if the they're out alot youd see it with the naked eye.  what if its a small amount and how do you tell?  look straight down with the barrel pointed at your face? :shake:

Haven't owned a WASR, but I had a kit of mine (Polish) assembled on a NoDakSpud receiver.  Anyway, the guy who put it together was a home gunsmith and assembled it with canted sights (or maybe the sights were already canted, who knows?).  The front post sight is adjusted to maximum right, but it still hits dead center.  Point being a canted barrel/sight isn't a world ender, it can be corrected by sight adjustments (to a degree).

As for telling when your sights are canted, it's usually pretty obvious, especially when you take off the top cover and remove the recoil spring/bolt carrier.    Let me snap a pic real quick and I'll get it on here.  And no, you look from the rear of the receiver towards the front sight.  Not at the front sight towards the rear of the receiver.

If you do get a WASR and it's really afwul, you can re-sell it or send it into a gunsmith (just about any will do the job, but I'm particularly fond of Rifle Dynamics) and they'll make it right for you.

Hunting / Hunting Pigs
« on: December 13, 2010, 11:36:58 AM »
Hey all -

I'm interested in hunting pigs, but have never hunted before.  I've read up on the rules for hunting http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dofaw/hunting/MammalHuntingRegs_Chap123.pdf and have a good idea of what's needed in order to legally hunt.

I'll be on the big island, in Puna.  I'd be using a rifle (caliber 7.62x39) without dogs.

What techniques do you use? Sit and wait or go on the stalk?
If a pig comes onto the property I'm renting, am I allowed to "hunt" it (assuming I have permission from my landlord).
What does the average pig weigh after being gutted?
How do you butcher a pig?

Vladimir,

Just to confirm... A gun store converts Saigas to accept standard AK47 mags.

So even though AK mags could be used in an illegal "assault pistol", it's good to go because it's for use in a rifle?

Alright...

So if I bring an Saiga, converted to use high capacity mags Ak47 magazines, that's a no go despite the fact it's not a pistol or a defined "assault weapon"?  Even in California, this is OK.

Thank you!  Hopefully others will chime in with answers to the questions you didn't know.

Another question I had was about ammo.  I seem to recall reading somewhere that it must be registered so you cannot mail-order from the mainland?  Is this right?

My comments in bold:

10 rnd pistol or any magazine that can fit a pistol.  ie AR, AK, Mini 14 mags.   Hawaii considers anything with a barrel less than 16" a pistol.  no grandfathering of standard cap mags.  you still see standard cap AR mags at the range ::) What's Hawaii's definition of "standard capacity" (round count wise)?

no, other than the 10 round deal and no sbr or awb's.  no mag release tools or funky grips. No sbr or awb's?  What's that?

Legal and Activism / Some Questions...
« on: December 11, 2010, 08:23:06 AM »
Hey all -

Been reading up on Hawaii's gun laws, but still have unanswered questions.  I understand any responses given is not legal counsel and should be double checked with a lawyer adept in Hawaii's firearm laws.

That said...

1- Is CCW on your own property OK?  In California, as long as you are on your property (inside the house) and your front/back yard is closed off from the public, you are legal to carry concealed without a permit.

2- The castle doctrine thing is a little confusing and I'm getting conflicting information.  Can someone clarify that Hawaii, does in fact, have a castle doctrine law in effect?

3- What are the rules on high capacity mags?  It seems that pistol mags are not allowed to exceed 10 rounds, however there's no regulations for rifle mags.  Is this correct?

4- Does Hawaii still have the "assault weapons" ban in effect?  Here in California we get around it by requiring a tool to detach a magazine and affixing a magazine less than 10 rounds capacity.  Or we run a featureless set-up

5- I understand the process of buying a firearm in Hawaii (hunter safety course, apply for permit with fingerprinting, buy firearm and register at police department within 5 days).  My question is, theoretically, could I start this process the first day I get there?  Or do I need to become a resident for "x" amount of days before starting the process?

6- When registering firearms, can I register it to my girlfriend and myself?  We will be living at the same address.

7- If firearms are sent to the mainland for gunsmithing/repair/et al can the FFL that receives my firearm send it back directly to me? Or must I go through the registration process again?

8- What are the rules on folding stocks?  In California you're allowed to have folding stocks on non-assault weapons, as long as the overall length with the stock closed is 30".  The rest of the nation seems to say 30" OAL with stock open.

9- What are the rules on ammo?  Is mail order OK?  I seem to remember reading somewhere that ammo must be registered so mail order is a no-go?   ???

It's a lot of questions, and I thank you for taking the time to answer them!

I am curious... can one use fear of theft as "good cause"? Someone I am talking with for house sitting/renovation work says that theft is a big problem in Puna.

So would fear of my firearm ending up stolen and in the hands of criminals be something that may let the police grant you a CCW?

General Discussion / Re: New Member? Introduce yourself here!

Well, started with my girlfriend working at a Yoga retreat on the big island.  I wanted to join her, but not at the yoga retreat.

So as I was searching around for housing, I found someone who is willing to let me stay for $200 a month as long as I do some work around the house and babysit from Feb to June.

Girlfriend likes the idea of staying as long as possible, so we went with it.  There's a slight possibility (slight!) that we will stay in Hawaii for a longer time.

Hello,

My name is Jason from California.  I will be visiting Hawaii for about 5 months and plan to be bringing a firearm or two.  Here to learn about HI’s laws, shooting locations, and hopefully make a few friends.

I will be going to the big island,  south of Hilo.  Hope to see some of you around at the shooting range and gunshops!
