Firearms and Accessories / Re: Gunsmith for Colt 1911

Thanks, ren. I just learned that Ed Masaki passed away late last year. I actually had him working on my 1911 but he unfortunately never finished and I’m looking for someone to pick up where he left off.

Aloha, does anyone know of a reputable gunsmith in Honolulu that has experience with an original Colt 1911 A1, 45 ACP? If not in Honolulu, any reputable shops on the mainland? Thanks in advance..

Thanks for the info guys! Unfortunately, my Dad didn't tell me much about it other than he had it accurized years ago. I don't know if he had other custom work done to it; it looks pretty standard from my untrained eye. The serial numbers on the slide and behind the firing pin stop plate match so I'm thinking it's all original parts for the most part. I checked the serial number (in the 700k range) and it was manufactured in 1942. I'll take your advice and definitely NOT mess with  it myself. A trip to Koko head may be in order to have the seasoned guys take a look. Mahalo for the support!!

General Discussion / Job for a Gunsmith?
« on: March 11, 2016, 01:42:48 PM »
I have a Colt 1911A1 handed down to me from my dad. The barrel bushing is extremely tight fitting and nearly impossible to remove for a proper cleaning. After using the barrel bushing wrench to release the spring tension, the only thing that worked is using a screwdriver (very carefully) to pry the dang thing out. Thankfully, I managed to get it out without scratching or pitting the muzzle area. Any suggestions on remedying this situation? I was thinking of wet sanding the bushing to make it a better fit, but I'm so worried that I'll screw it up somehow. After all, it was one of my dad's prized guns. Is this a job for a gunsmith…if so, are there any on Oahu that can help?

First,Hawaii County Police Department has a PDF on their website that can be used to notify them of the transfer of a long gun  .....

Document:  http://www.hawaiipolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/gun_transfer.pdf

HOWEVER .....  For a handgun .....

The new owner (you) will receive one copy of the permit back, just like in a gun shop purchase where they keep their copies and you get one to use for registration.

The reason handguns and long guns are different:  you won't ever have a specific permit for a long gun, so the PDF is used for sending to the police department.

Scroll to Transfer, Possession of Firearms

Sorry, just to make sure I understand, I should get my permits to acquire (one for each handgun), make xerox copies, mail them to my brother and have him sign one set to send back to me, then he needs to submit the second set within 48 hours to Hawaii county PD?

My brother who lives in Hilo will be transferring ownership of two handguns to me. Once I send him my permits to acquire and he sends it backed to me signed, I will go and register them here in Honolulu under my name. Question is, does my brother have to do anything else on his side in Hawaii County?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

No FFL is required for same State transfers.
He can ship it directly to to you via all carriers EXCEPT USPS.

1. Apply for permit from HPD
2. pick up permit and send permit to Hilo , (seller) sign the back.
3. Send back paperwork with the pistol to you directly but not via USPS.
4. register pistol with HPD

Humilio start a new subject for that topic, keep this topic for the Lines at HPD.

Thanks for the info. Sorry for straying off topic. Got carried away...

GlockNewb, Dogman: thanks for responding. I have yet another question, my brother who lives in Hilo wants to transfer ownership of two of his handguns to me. What do I do after I obtain my permits to acquire? Do I mail them to him to sign and then he mails it back to me within the 10 days? Then I go to HPD with the signed permits and the two handguns to get them registered under my name within 2 days of receiving the handguns? Also, do you know what or if he needs to do anything at the Hilo PD to "release" the ownership to me?

Report for Tuesday, 19 January 2016

Day:  T     <== M | T | W | TH | F
Time in:  Arrived at noon
Time out:  1312
People in line upon Arrival;: 17 in front, unknown in the room
People in line upon Departure:  12+
Permit Applications Submitted:  0
Permits Picked Up: 0
Local Firearms Registered: 1
Out of State Firearms Registered: 0

About as good a job as could be done with that many people. Officers came out periodically to address permit pick-ups. Signed on the new E-signature system, seems to speed up the process a bit.

Ive never registered a handgun in Honolulu before, always in Hilo where its very easy. When going to get my permit to acquire, is it helpful if I fill out the forms (found on HPDs website) beforehand instead of at the station? Ive heard that HPD wants you to complete the forms at the station so theres no mistakes. Also, when bringing the firearm back to get it registered, can I use my soft-sided case or do they require a hard case?

Thanks for the updates! Your posts are very helpful to me as I am trying to figure out the best times to go. Like most of us, I dont have all day to stand in line. Keep it up.
