So my hunters ed being 20+ years old is still good for long arms

Yes. HRS 134-2(m)(1), which became effective on May 13, 2024, says that if you have a Hunter's Ed certificate which is valid for life, which Hawaii's certificates are, then that satisfies the long gun/shotgun permitting requirement.

Where do people in Maui go to get live fire certification?

Maui Ammo & Gun Supply (MAGS) has an indoor range at their store.  Not sure if others are offering it at the Ukumehame range.

General Discussion / Re: Had it with Brownells

Ordered a Brownells AR receiver lapping tool on 5/31.  Standard shipping to Hawaii $8.  OK, like i have a choice.

Shipped 6/1.   Start tracking it.  2# package.

Iowa - Missouri - Texas - New Mexico - Arizona - Calif, where it has ricocheted around for over three weeks now.

FedEx claims a delivery of 7/13.  WTF, a month and a half to get a 2# package to me?   For $8??

Yes, multiple long wait phone calls that yielded nothing, other than one lady talking about the package being in Anchorage, Alaska at the time.

Unless Brownells comes up with a USPS choice for low cost shipping, I am done with them.

Ordered a Wheeler tool from Amazon 6/30, will be here 7/5.

Rant off.  having to get everything shipped here is one of the great negatives of living Hawaii.

I'm in the same boat with Brownells and their FedEx Smartpost.  Two outstanding orders -- one 3 lbs package shipped on 6/6, and it has been sitting after traveling to Chino, CA, with a scheduled delivery of 7/13.  The other is a 1 lbs package shipped on 6/20, and has been sitting in Chino since 7/1, with a scheduled delivery of 7/29.  The 40 day +/- estimate seems to be pretty accurate.

My Aero Precision lowers have a nylon tipped tensioning screw.  Just be sure to set the tension before you install your grip, since the screw is located underneath it.

...that pivot pin spring and detent was a SOB to get in there without it flying across the room.

I keep a gallon size ziploc in my toolbox for this very reason.  Even while using a dedicated tool to install the spring, detent, and pin, I still do the entire process inside of the ziploc, which has saved me at least once from launching the spring and detent into oblivion.  I also picked up a spare parts kit off amazon, just in case, and it came with the tool that I use.  http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B019YPZPQK/?tag=2ahawaii-20.  Great job with the assembly and nice rifle!

Savage Mark II FV-SR .22LR with MaddMac's Precision Tactical compensator, cheapo bipod, and tactical ironing board.  Hope to have a decent optic mounted soon along with a Boyd's Pro Varmint stock.

General Discussion / Re: Magazine Storage?

Additional safe with basic wooden homemade shelves (shaped like this: π).  Relatively easy to reconfigure or modify to hold various sizes of loose mags, ammo cans, or bags by changing the length of the sides or adding dividers on certain shelves.  I run a dehumidifying rod to mitigate the risk of rust on my metal mags.

I also keep a couple of cloth sacks in the safe that Amazon sent me as "gift wrap" for some odd shaped orders.  If I have to, I can shovel the loose mags into the sacks and bail rather quickly, looking more like Santa Claus to my neighbors than Rambo.

Thanks for the input, drck1000. If I decide to buy a basic first gun, would a Colt 6940 fit the bill, at least until I figure out what I really want?

PWS makes very nice rifles and while I have no regrets regarding my PWS purchase, they are expensive.  And so are optics for it (which isn't unique to PWS, but slapping a cheap optic on an expensive rifle just feels like a disservice, at least to me).  There are deals to be had online for the MK114/MK116, but at least with regards to the MK116 Mod 1, PWS appears to have had an earlier release with a shorter rail, then later updated them with a longer rail, so be sure to confirm that you are not being sent old stock.

That said, I agree with drck1000 that a basic AR would be a great starter rifle, so if you can afford it, buy both!  If you're set on purchasing a Colt, then I would personally choose a 6920 (assembled or in OEM configuration, depending on your needs) over a 6940.  Either of them would suit you fine, however, if it's within your budget and will leave you with enough leftover for mags and ammo.   :shaka:

Firearms and Accessories / Re: $57 glock night sights
« on: January 20, 2016, 02:27:13 PM »
I've read on other forums of many members sending a fully stripped slide to Glock and having it returned assembled with new internals and RSA.

I picked up a worn police trade-in Gen 3 G21 with dead night sights a couple of months ago and sent the entire pistol into Glock for service and replacement of the sights.  Glock charged my card $59 and some change and returned it with brand new night sights and internals, including the trigger assembly, takedown lever, slide stop lever, and RSA.  Shipping the entire pistol can be costly, since it must be done via UPS/Fedex overnight, unless shipped from an FFL, who can send it via USPS.  I elected to send it through my FFL and managed to fit it in a small USPS flat rate box, and Glock returned it in a recycled (but great condition) factory case.  The only hiccup in the process was that they initially got the return shipping address wrong and listed my street address with my FFL's city and zip code, which are not the same.  It took a few calls back and forth with Glock to correct the mistake, but they were able to get it fixed before it got picked up by their carrier, and all was well.  Glock took about a week to service the pistol following receipt, and the overall timeline was about 2.5 weeks from the date my FFL shipped it to when he received it back.  It's an excellent service that I would use again in the future if needed.
