Hello All,

Please allow my to chime in.  "Riiiinnnnggg"  I saw the post in "Reviews" and strongly fell that it should be posted here.  Some of you know that I review firearms so I hope that you guys will trust my information on this one.

I took the NRA Instructors Class from Darin and thought I had a pretty good friendship with him.  He was a great mentor.  Anytime I had a question on training or needed a form to fill out he was there to help.  I ended up helping him with a class of about 20 students for a Basic Pistol Class.

Somewhere time before or after that he said he was going to put a powder order in and I gave him cash.  I have attached a picture of the receipt.  For almost a year I waited  for this order.  It never came.  I posted here on 2a if anyone had any dealings with that order.  Some people say they got their money back some said they are still waiting.

After multiple attempts through facebook and texting i finally let him know that if I didnt get my money back or the powder I would take him to small claims court.  A week later I got a money order from him.  I have attached that picture below as well.  The date I have him the money was on 03/10/2015.  The money order date you ask?  I just got it in the mail in April.  4/12/2016 to be exact.

I have other dealings with him that involve investing money into his store but as it can be considered as hearsay I will not mention them here.  Please all be careful when dealing with him.

That's not the entire story Russell.  Please remove this post.

4.You may check in up to 11 lbs of ammunition per passenger, packed separately from your unloaded firearms in the manufacturer's original package or securely packed in fiber, wood or metal boxes. Loose or bulk packaging in bags or boxes will not be accepted.

1) 11 pounds per traveler unless Alaska Airlines then they allow 50 pounds
2) no declaration required as a courtesy you can tell them you have ammo in your checked luggage
3) they reserve the right to weigh the ammo separately

My theory is 11.25 is not 12 pounds so you are still in the 11 pound range and good to go. It is doubtful that your ammo will be weighed at the counter, I have only been asked the weight and occasionally they will take a glance to ensure its in the correct packaging. Most counter people will not know their airlines policies regarding ammo so it would help to have a copy of it with you. Happy Travels

I believe you do need to declare ammo.

https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transporting-firearms-and-ammunition

You may transport unloaded firearms in a locked hard-sided container as checked baggage only. Declare the firearm and/or ammunition to the airline when checking your bag at the ticket counter. The container must completely secure the firearm from being accessed.

Not to mention the challenge of finding a range facility to conduct the live fire portion of Phase II at the known distances required by the Phase II curriculum.  Koko Head pistol range doesn't cut it.  Gotta be in the action bays.  :-(

Seems skewed to be "anti" gun so far.  :-(

I firmly believe that getting struck by an axe could result in death or serious bodily injury, therefore justifying "lethal force" (cop's gun).  Then again, I'm not an attorney, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

So all the class needs to teach is 1 hour of A & B above and they're good to go. 4 & 2 achieved. ( provided they have the old affidavit.)

Sounds good on the surface, however I wouldn't be signing anything unless I KNOW what was previously taught.  Unless I was at the other course or was familiar with the instructor(s) teaching the course, there's no way I could attest to what was taught.  I'd sooner offer the individual a seat in one of my upcoming courses (at a very deeply discounted rate) so I know what was taught, how it was taught and if I'm ever called into court to testify as to the training and methods used, I'm able to do so with confidence.

Gave me a great idea.  NRA pistol instructors can create a special cheaper class for the hunter's ed/military group to cover just the live fire portion that is missed.  It would be an optional supplemental class to teach gun handling and range procedures.

There are some instructor groups that already offer "hands on" training at discounted rates for those who desire the training.  Problem is that so many people think that they can adequately train their spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc. with the minimal training that they've had.  This is not only unsafe, but often results in passing "bad" or "unsafe" habits on to the "new" shooters.

I'm all for making handgun permitting the same as for long guns.  Reality is that a long gun can do a lot more damage than a handgun, yet there are far more restrictions on handguns.  Oh, and does anyone happen to know how many criminals who commit violent felonies with a firearm (long gun or handgun) have a permit for said firearm?  Heck, I'd go a step further and ask how man of them have had a formal training course on the use off the firearm.

Reality is that the current law is not working as intended.  The "bad guys" are still getting firearms and using them to commit crimes.  We as a firearms community need to educate the general public on how firearms laws are working and do what we can to illicit change in the law so that everyday law abiding citizens aren't "unintentionally" violating the law.

BIng Bing Bing, Give this man a prize........

TBH i have no problem with requiring a safety class, Having taken both a pistol course and the Hunters education class, The Hunters Education firearms part is a joke, The only reason i can see they even include it is so the state can say they provide a "Free" way for people to get qualified to own a handgun and as such the training requirements dont violate peoples rights.

Having spent many hours on the range, I've seen folks with varying levels of training.  The Hunter Education Course should be used for the sole purpose of obtaining a hunting license.  There is no "hands on" training with regard to firearms.  The entire section that relates to firearms combined with the law section (regarding firearms) can be covered in 2 hours tops.  Having seen at least half of the people in the recent course I've attended raising their hand when asked if they were there to get a permit to acquire a handgun, I find this to be a bit concerning.  Many have had no previous experience with firearms of any kind.  With this being a "minimum" training, and having minimal impact on safety, why not revisit HRS 134 and remove the training requirement and make ALL firearms permit applications the same (as in make long gun and handgun permit applications the same process).  This would clear up some of the confusion as well as congestion at HPD.

Revamp the law and hold citizens capable of following the law  Require training only when a violation occurs (like with a DUI).  There are ample sources of training available for those who need it.

I guess they follow the letter of the law.

I've been teaching pistol classes for a few years myself.  I went in to do my pistol permit a couple years ago and they said my affidavit, from my LIFE course I took 15 years ago, was no good.  It did not state how many hours of classtime/live fire I performed.  I said I teach the class now. No good.

We've helped several people who have affidavits that don't specify the "4 hours of classroom training and 2 hours of live fire".  Not sure when the switch happened, but there are a lot of folks out there who have older affidavits that get unpleasantly surprised when they get to HPD.

Rumor has it that the Mayor is pro-gun, a hunter and a shooter.  Maybe we need to find a way to circumvent the "gate keeper" and get straight to the source.

Be sure that hanging targets are anchored at two points.  Had a guy getting his @$$ chewed by a RO today.  Dude compounded the problem by saying "The guys at [insert the names of two gun shops here] said it would be ok.".  Ultimately it will be up to the RO on duty to decide.  The RO told the dude "Mike Muramoto is the range master and he makes the rules.  His rules say it needs to be anchored at two points, so that's the way it has to be."

Can we push for legislators to pass a law that says LEO must have the same magazine capacity as civilians?

Don't think that would get very far.  My approach would be to focus on the use of the magazine.  Amend the law to make the possession/use of commonly available rifle magazines that fit in a pistol as well as a rifle restricted to rifle use.  So if you have a bunch of 10+ Glock magazines and use them with your Kel-Tec SUB-2000 rifle, then you're good to go.  However, if you use the same magazines with a pistol, then it's a crime.  Further define "use" by being inserted into the firearm.  Not an ideal situation, but a step towards un-f-n the magazine law.  Most don't realize that standard AK-47 and Ruger 10/22 magazines that hold 10+ rounds could be illegal under current law.  Eventually it would be nice to see the laws fixed so all law abiding citizens would be able to enjoy the various firearms and accessories when used legally as well as ethically.
