General Discussion / Re: TSA /HA new regulation

I would still take the time to file a clarification with Hawaiian regarding the actions of the Hawaiian Agent.
Hawaiian Airlines Consumer Affairs Office

Unfortunately each station seems to make up their own interpretation of the rules, regulations, and policies. I've never had any issues checking in a firearm in HNL and amazingly didn't when I was transiting through JFK coming home. But i've had lots of issues at the neighbor island stations with different agents each time.

General Discussion / Re: Airline Firearm Travel

I’ve had ammo in the locked case as well as in my regular checked bag. Main thing is that they don’t want loose rounds so cannot be in a bag or dumped in a box. Depending on the airline I usually transport my ammo in mags which is within TSA regulations.

Preparedness and Survival / Re: Tactical Pen - Do You Carry One?

I carry one as part of my travel EDC for the plane ride and in places I’m not allowed to ccw. I’ve never had any issues with TSA in the US or Internationally.

I travel at least twice a week on Hawaiian with a firearm checked. Ammo can be placed in your luggage as long as it’s packed in original packaging (not loose packed). Starting this week, ammo must be declared at checkin due to a new system for Hawaiians new A321 NEO aircraft. Reason is that ammo has to be placed into a specific cargo compartment because the heat in other compartments may cause the ammo to exploded. This is the explanation given to me from a Chief customer service agent at HNL.

Had a similar experience when I was traveling THROUGH NYC (JFK) connecting to Arlington, VA. I was changing planes and carriers so I had to retrieve my bags/firearm and re-check them in with Delta in another terminal. The Delta agent was inexperienced and had a hard time understanding why I had a firearm. New York Port Authority was called and I was questioned for about 45 min. I asked them if they were familiar with FOPA and they had me prove that I was only transiting through the state and not staying. I had to show documentation from my Hawaiian flight to JFK, my Delta Confirmation/ticket, all of my CCW cards, and explain to them that we aren't required to carry our firearm registration in Hawaii. Once they were satisfied, they cleared my bags and firearm through TSA and I was allowed to proceed to security. They were upset that I had possession of my firearm from baggage claim in one terminal to the Delta check-in counter but couldn't really do much about it. I asked them if they would have escorted me and my bags from point A to B and they said 'No'.  ??? ???

I would never go through JFK again with a firearm unless I really had no other option due to travel arrangements. But it does pay to know the local laws as well as federal.

notice how the media didn't refer to the rifle as an 'assault rifle' but AR-15 Semi-automatic?

General Discussion / Re: TSA Approved Pistol Case
« on: April 22, 2017, 09:23:25 AM »
I work in the airline industry and travel several times a week with my firearms so I'll help to clarify as best as I can.

The case that contains the firearm MUST be a LOCKED, HARDSIDED container. That can be a pelican, combo safe, etc. If you're putting it inside your luggage, it doesn't matter what kind of bag it is. It could be a duffle bag (although I wouldn't recommend it). Zippers are absolutely ok. When I travel, I have a small rollerboard that I put my pelican inside and personally, I like to cable tie my pelican to the frame of my rollerboard.

If you're thinking of just using your luggage as the "case" then you're going to run into trouble with the airline agents and TSA.

Hope this helps!!

Shooter has criminal background, including weapon charges.

The children who were shot were apparently standing behind their teacher when she was shot.

Wow, they didn't even pay the extra $ to have the ads and logos removed from their Wix website. Looks like someone through that together in like 5 min.

Heard on the radio today that the bill was submitted as a 'courtesy'...sounds like total BS. How about some pro-2a courtesy bills!

General Discussion / Re: Ammo and airlines

OAI is a charter airline and has limited business in Hawaii compared to the other commercial carriers like Hawaiian, etc. They're not likely to lose too much business by 'banning' ammo in checked baggage. I work in the industry and there hasn't been any notification or talk of restricting the transportation of ammo in checked baggage.
