General Discussion / Reciprocity
« on: July 01, 2022, 10:33:33 PM »
not to ask a stupid question, but where do we stand with reciprocity and the supreme court ruling?  Obtain CCW in Nevada for example.  carry in hawaii and get arrested because license not valid in hawaii.  Another supreme court case?  or slam dunk with 9th circus?

General Discussion / Let no tragedy go to waste - ban on lending firearms
« on: January 22, 2020, 04:17:35 AM »
Quote

State lawmakers said Tuesday that they were considering changes to Hawaii gun laws this session even before Sunday’s shooting deaths of two Honolulu police officers at a Diamond Head home presumably at the hands of a man who had no permit to own any guns.

Among the measures being considered in both the House and Senate are ones aimed at what lawmakers in both houses consider a loophole in gun regulations that involves the lending of firearms to another person.

“One of the loopholes that we’re finding is you may not necessarily be able to own one (a gun), but you can borrow one legally without having permitting in some cases,” said Rep. Chris Lee, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. “So that’s one of the bills this year that we’re looking at to try and sort out who is responsible and what checks are in place in situations like that.”

House Bill 1600 says the current law allows certain firearms to be lent to adults for use within the state for up to 15 days without a permit and for use outside the state for up to 75 days, “thereby allowing the lending of firearms to persons who are not subject to a background check and other firearm permit requirements.”

Senate Judiciary Chairman Karl Rhoads said he is introducing a similar measure in the Senate but that his version would include an exception allowing a hunter to lend firearms to another person with a firearm license for up to 12 hours.

Our friend chodes hard at work  ::)

SO if you want to legally let your friend shoot your rifle at the range or where ever, you need to go to HPD and get a temporary permit?

Quote
"At the core of the Second Amendment is a citizen’s right to have in his and her home for self-defense common firearms," wrote Judge Benitez. "As evidenced by California’s own crime statistics, the need to protect one’s self and family from criminals in one’s home has not abated no matter how hard they try. Law enforcement cannot protect everyone."

"[A] magazine is an essential mechanical part of a firearm," said the judge.  "The size limit directly impairs one’s ability to defend one’s self. Neither magazines, nor rounds of ammunition, nor triggers, nor barrels are specifically mentioned in the Second Amendment. Neither are they mentioned in Heller. But without a right to keep and bear triggers, or barrels, or ammunition and the magazines that hold ammunition, the Second Amendment right would be meaningless."

Any impacts for hawaii in the short or long term?  CA is part of the 9th circus, correct?

In a split two-to-three decision on Tuesday, the panel found Hawaii infringed on the rights of plaintiff George Young when it twice denied him a permit to carry a gun outside.

Hunting / boar hunting Oahu with rifle - anyone do it?
« on: April 12, 2018, 09:53:02 AM »

Any of you guys hunt boar on oahu with rifle?  If so, what general areas are good?  Ideally central to east oahu.  Public hunting land.

Thinking about constructing a frame for metal target for the rifle range side.  Is the best design a welded metal sawhorse style?  Or is it better to simply buy one off cabelas or something?  Or can I just go cheepy and use plastic PVC pipes and joints from home depot?

Went hunting on lanai the other week, and it made me realize the importance of being able to make accurate standing shots quickly.  Unless you're primarily setting up an ambush, there likely wont be enough time to utilize a bipod or even a shooting stick.  With steel targets, I'd be getting immediate "hit or no hit" confirmation.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-says-deputy-waited-outside-160046902.html

President Donald Trump slammed a deputy police officer who failed to enter Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School while gunman Nikolas Cruz was at large, calling him a "coward" who lacked the "courage" to fulfill the duties of his job.

“He’s trained his whole life… but when it came time to get in there and do something, he didn’t have the courage or something happened," Trump told reporters on Friday. "But he certainly did a poor job, there's no question about that."

Broward County Deputy Officer Scot Peterson resigned from his post on Thursday after word got out that the 54-year-old had been the only armed deputy on the scene and had done nothing to apprehend Cruz as he killed 17 people. Instead, Peterson waited outside for "upwards of four minutes," according to Sheriff Scott Israel and video footage capturing the incident.

"I am devastated," Israel said at a press conference. "Sick to my stomach. He never went in."

Just curious what you guys think about this.

The plan to overhaul SNAP would save a projected $214 billion over a decade, according to the administration. It would give all households receiving more than $90 a month in cash a food-aid package that would include items such as shelf-stable milk, peanut butter, cereal and meat.

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/dollar-stores-hammered-trump-proposal-200545163.html

The foods in the deliveries would include shelf-stable milk, juice, grains, cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans, and canned meat, fruits and vegetables, according to USDA. The department estimates that it could supply these goods at roughly half the cost of retail, slashing the cost of SNAP while still feeding the hungry.

Hmmm, like trump or not, this proposal actually makes a lot of sense.  This is guaranteed to piss off the big businesses like walmart making a ton of money off of food stamps.

The food aid package could be weighted heavier towards staples and nutritious food such as rice, beans, or other starches, which is ideal for a family that's actually "hungry", and prevents people from using it on random garbage foods or premium items.  I always thought that food stamps should be used for staples only.  Instead 9/10 times at the supermarket, I see people buying premium steak, sodas, and other garbage food.

States can utilize economies of scale for contracts to purchase the items.... right now the government is paying full retail on whatever the recipients purchase.

Legal and Activism / Request: include due date in title requiring action

Sorry to nitpick, but can you guys include a date in the title where action is needed?

DUE 2/08/18   - OPPOSE: HB2228 (Firearms Voluntary Surrender)

It's pretty difficult to tell which bills are still "live" as far as ones requiring action.       :shaka:

General Discussion / kokohead bucket range brass
« on: December 27, 2017, 10:32:23 AM »
quick question - what is done with the range brass left in the bucket at kokohead?  is it something the city workers takes to recycle, is it a "free for all" scrounge, does the RSOs take it home to sort, etc?

Just curious....  I think typically the stuff left in there isn't great anyways, 9mm, 22lr, and maybe 40s&w on the pistol side, and typically 223 and 22lr on the rifle side.

The news reported that they sold something like 25% more permits this year than last.  I somehow doubt the stores are bringing in 25% more than they did previously.

For Don Quiote, anyone have experience on what time they open on 12/26, and what the situation with the lines and stuff is?  Like is it better to go a few hours after opening to wait for the line to die down?

TIA  :shaka:

Interesting.... Just think how badly this could have gone for him and his wife, had he not had access to a firearm.

Three unidentified men, believed to have been armed, broke into Childress’ North Carolina home Sunday around 10:30 p.m. ET, but fled after Childress fired shots at them, WCNC-TV reported.

Quote
According to the WXII report, Childress — who was elected First Vice President of the National Rifle Association in May — reportedly told deputies the only reason he and his wife “were here today was because of God and the Second Amendment (the right to bear arms).”

I really hate to bring up a particular case or two we've had here in Hawaii that might have made a huge difference if they were not only armed but had concealed carry as well.   The fact that the victim was visiting a rental property would not have impaired access to a firearm if Hawaii allowed CCW.

Hunting / Good walkie talkie for lanai
« on: December 07, 2017, 09:37:42 PM »
Was wondering if anyone can recommend a set of good walkie talkies for Lanai hunting.  The ones we currently have suck (to put it lightly).  Probably will end up needing 4 of them.  Cost isn't nearly a big a factor as function, reliability, range, other features, etc.  I'm thinking up to $200.  Nowadays a normal set of 2 walkies is maybe $30, so a budget of 6-7x that should be able to pay for something good?

TIA  :D

Happened to see this news article. Super random, but thought I'd share

Teen dubbed 'Corpse Bride' reportedly had 50 surgeries to look like Angelina Jolie

An Iranian teenager has reportedly undergone 50 surgical procedures in order to look like her muse, Angelina Jolie.

According to Belgian media and reported by The Daily Mail, 19-year-old Sahar Tabar has amassed more than 324,000 followers on Instagram due to her shocking transformation. The teenager has supposedly maintained a strict diet and lost nearly 90 pounds as well as having undergone multiple surgical procedures.

While the drastic and unhealthy weight loss is apparent, many aren’t convinced she’s gone under the knife, with some assuming that she’s wearing prosthetics on her cheeks, nose, and lips, and using makeup and contouring to enhance other features.

Tabar’s been heavily criticized online for her transformation since her story has gone viral, with social media users taking to Instagram to dub her the “Corpse Bride.”.

How did the police find out who are and aren't legal marijuana users?  Unless they sent out a request for info to the medical providers for registered users, they woudn't know who are current gunowners with marijuana cards unless they tried to register and got denied.

How is the surrender of firearms "voluntary"? Whether or not you bring them down to the station yourself or the cops kick your door in with a warrant, it's a mandatory confiscation.  Just another example of how law abiding citizens trying to do things the right and legal way get shafted.  Great start by our new chief!  /sarcasm

-------------------------------------
The Honolulu Police Department has told legal marijuana users who own guns that they must turn in their weapons within 30 days.

In a letter to about 30 medical marijuana card holders on Oahu, the police said “you have 30 days upon receipt of this letter to voluntarily surrender your firearms.”

General Discussion / Looks like CMP 1911s finally happening
« on: November 22, 2017, 11:16:26 AM »
Save your pennies!  I'd hazard a guess to start sometime late next year, assuming the president signs off, which im pretty sure he will.

On the handguns headed to the CMP, the bill instructs the Secretary of the Army to conduct a two-year pilot program that will transfer “not less than 8,000 surplus caliber .45 M1911/M1911A1 pistols” in 2018 with a cap of no more than 10,000 transferred per fiscal year. The program would then be reviewed to ensure the guns were sold by CMP in accordance with applicable federal laws and evaluate its cost to the Army.
......
Fast forward to today and, while Depot officials earlier this year showed Guns.com crated 1911s ready to transfer, and CMP is eager to receive them to begin the lengthy process to inspect, grade, and sell these pistols to the public, the guns are still in a holding pattern with the military spending an estimated $2 per gun, per year, to store the surplus weapons.
