Hey guys,

I'm moving soon and had a question.  I know I can call HPD, but I'm wondering if anyone has done this before or knows the answer.

I have a valid long gun permit. What if I decide to buy a rifle a day or two before I fly and bring the rifle with me.  In this case, would I not need to register it because I left within the allowed time frame to register?  No, the rifle would not come back to Hawaii as it is a permanent move.

General Discussion / Welding supplies on Oahu
« on: June 20, 2015, 03:08:16 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm gonna start messing around with Tig / stick welding just for fun.  Where is the best / cheapest place on Oahu for welding suplies?  I know I can get most stuff online, but where do you guys go for your argon?

Any issues buying a used tank off CL or private seller?

Can I lease a tank? Is it better to buy my own?

What size for small garage hobby stuff?

I don't have any welding background, so any info is appreciated.  Thanks  :shaka:
Reloading / Young Guns has H4895 and H380
« on: April 28, 2015, 07:14:24 PM »
Just fyi fellas,

Was at YG this afternoon and they just received a couple cases of H4895, H380 and a couple of others.  No Varget or pistol powders that I saw.  Delivery was still in unopened boxes on the floor.

BTW, I picked up a pound of CFE pistol to try out.  Anyone use this stuff yet?
I knew 300 RUM and Barnes bullets were a beast, but DAMN!!  :worship:

100 yards btw.  Obviously not far enough for the plate.  For comparison, the small pits are from 147gr FMJ 308.

Hunting / Lanai Axis / sheep hunting tips?
« on: November 18, 2013, 08:00:42 PM »
Hey guys,

I'm looking into doing a Axis / sheep hunt on Lanai with my dad and a friend or two.  I've never been to Lanai, but most of the pics of downed game appear to be in rather open area.  This leads me to believe that game are roaming open areas and glassing / spot and stalk may be the way to go.  My previous hunting experience is Whitetail and hogs in the South and East US where we used tree stands.

Anyone have any info on the deer / sheep movement throughout the day?  What hunting strategy has given you the most shots?

My current plan is to get on higher ground, glass game movement, and move to intercept as much as wind permits.  How do you guys do it?

Coming from Oahu, my time in the field will be very limited with little to no scouting time.

Thanks
Firearms and Accessories / Hydro dipping in Hawaii?
« on: October 21, 2013, 08:44:59 PM »
Anyone know if there is anyone doing this professionally in Hawaii?  Looking into having a gun stock done...
Hi all,

I just got into using 18mm host flashlight bodies cuz they are cheap and I use 18650 rechargeables for my ecig,  and thought I'd share this.

Just fyi, 123a's will fit in these hosts, but because they are bored to 18mm (to use 18650 batts) there is a little rattle if you shake the light.  It is generally recommended to use primary cells in weapon lights, as they store better than rechargeables.

I wanted to mount lights on some long guns but didn't want to spend a bunch of $$.  I got some solar force host flashlight bodies from and some led modules from who is also known as "nailbender" on forums (he makes thermal epoxy potted led drop in's that are highly regarded but cheaper than malkoff's)

You can add tape switches and all if you want, but I wanted to KISS

I wanted to use primary cells for my weapon mounted lights, but didn't like that they would rattle under recoil.

I googled around and found people using everything from rubber bands to stuffing 18mm tubes with paper.
I'm too anal to stuff it with some random material so I found oveready's tubes, which are 14 bucks each!
I tried orings, but none of the sizes at Home Depot would fit, they were too thick.
I kept looking around at HD and right across the o-rings I found this for $3 bucks and some change........

I wrapped it around two surefire and duracell 123's and slid them in my solar force l2m's. PERFECT!

The fit is just snug enough that they won't fall out on their own weight, but will if you tap or swing the light. Absolutely no rattle.

I also have the delrin sleeve that came with my solarforce P1 and like the spiral wrap fit better.

This set up is brighter than my g2, polytac, or tlr-1.  the xpg g-2 has a nice combo of flood/throw and lumens/battery life.

High power led weapon light cost:

From lighthound:
Solar force L2 host $12.99
Gun mount $4.99 (Note that this clamps on rails and does not have a bolt that goes through rail slots.  I fired it on my AK for about 50rds and it did not slide down the rail.  We'll see how it holds up.....)

XPG G-2 single mode $35

Home Depot:
spiral wrap $3 bucks and change.

Shipping from both lighthound and customlites is cheap also.

Just for is another light I pieced together using two 18650's. Solarforce M3 head (3 mode), L2N host, and one 18650 extension tube. This thing is a beast with killer battery life!

Firearms and Accessories / Gunsmith to stake a 1911 front sight?
« on: May 25, 2013, 03:42:32 PM »
Anyone know a gunsmith that can remove/replace the staked front sight on m RIA GI?

or have a 1911 front sight staking tool I can borrow?

I don't really wanna buy the staking tool for a one time use job.

BTW Mods, how bout a list of local gunsmiths sticky on the forum? If there is one and I missed it, my fault.

Reloading / Let the brass prep begin! updated 12/24/12

I'll post pics through the process.

So as we all know, inspect your brass first and throughout the process.

Already did the tumble.....sorry

bought to get sprayed with sizing lube

I use a mix of lee sizing lube and rubbing alcohol.  After it dries it looks like this. I got a little ambitious with the lube this time....hehe

A trip through the sizing die

After sizing I check my die on a headspace gage before I end up with a bunch of rounds that won't chamber.  The headstamp should sit above the "valley", but not be higher than the "ridge" if that makes any sense to yall.  If you use a small straight edge it is easy to see where it sits. *Note - this gage works for 223 and most 5.56 brass.  However, LC cases have a slightly bigger diameter rim that prevents it from being inserted in the gage fully.  My workaround is that I size a NON-LC case that fits, check it in the gage and if its GTG, I know the LC cases will be too.

After sizing, I threw them all in a bucket with some warm water and a little detergent to get off most of the sizing lube.  I'm thinking of trying the "citric acid" bath with this bunch.  I heard it makes the brass super shiny!

Being that most of these cases have primer crimps, I couldn't decap and prime on the ram in one step.  I use this reamer from Hornady and chuck it in a drill press.  Works pretty well and its about a 10th of the cost of a super swage and comes with large and small reamers.

After reaming, it's time to separate into "naughty" and "nice" piles. I use this from lyman and it makes it much quicker than calipers

NICE  :geekdanc:

more to follow........
just a fyi for yall looking for mags.

General Discussion / koko head on a weekday sux too
« on: May 30, 2012, 10:40:37 AM »
Got here at 10:10 and no benches. Wow....frustrating.  Next time I' not coming early and will just shoot prone.
So I Ultimak'd my AMD 65 and picked up a Primary arms micro dot (fixed base).  Went with the PA because of price and I had one in the past with no probs.
The ultimak was a little more of a PITA to install than expected due to the AMD's handguard not wanting to fit over the clamps, then not wanting to let the retainer on.  After some F bombs and a couple of C clamps, it all worked out.
I mounted the PA micro fixed and it co-witnessed right at the top of the front pin
I like this dot because the "on" dial works in both directions.  You can either turn one click and have lowest setting or the other direction and have the brightest.  IIRC my older version had to be cranked up from dim to bright.
I haven't had a chance to bust a cap with her, but so far I like the setup.
