Political Discussion / Re: Is America Becoming a Communist Country?
« on: March 08, 2019, 11:18:58 AM »
You won't understand what communism really is and how it began unless you listen to what I posted.

People are willing to pick up guns and risk lives to defend the Constitution but few will do the REALLY hard thing, pick up earphones and sit still and spend some time to learn about the Big Picture. Most people's unwillingness to do exactly this is exactly why things are how they are today.

"...have seized upon that word, Liberal, as a cover-up for their activities. It sounds so innocent, and so humanitarian..."

Please don't criticize unless you've listened to it.
Preparedness and Survival / Re: Satellite internet for SHTF?

It used to be called Exede.  Now it’s called ViaSat.

Speeds were around 670ms latency, 14Mbps down, 3Mbps up.

What was the service fee like? Monthly?
Did the equipment (satellite transceiver) require a lot of power?

Remain skeptical, but also hopeful.

In the context of the SHUTDOWN here is what (allegedly) is the REAL PLAN (not really the wall).

To show the American people that the bloated government can actually operate without the bloat.

If true, it means the shutdown is permanent. Which is why Trump alluded to possible YEARS of shutdown.

I admit I am slow to the party.

I have only recently really looked into what is going on.

I took a kind of hiatus because of information overload.

Anyway, maybe we need a thread on this.

LOL and I thought this was some kind of brainstorming session in case of policy changes.

Used satellite Internet in Molokai.   Lots of latency (> 500ms).

Not looking for super fast experience, just enough to send and receive emails.

What system did you try out?

Exede internet is slow and can be spotty.  I had it for 3 years until HawTelCom started putting in fiber optic in my area.

Thanks. I am probably going to go with Inmarsat anyway. Expensive but I need a backup solution.
Preparedness and Survival / Re: Storing Rice and Oxy Absorbers
« on: January 11, 2019, 10:16:52 AM »
Went to Taiwan and at 1 grocery store, every brand of rice was vacuum sealed.  From the 1 pounder to the 50lbs.

Bugs are sealed along with those bags from the factory.

You won't know until half a year to a year later.

Most people finish those bags of rice quickly as they are not storing it, and are eating it soon after buying back.

Do everything you can to protect and preserve your rice.

I tried storing WITHOUT oxygen absorbers and after a few months / a year, I found a trillion bugs eating the rice. They live at the bottom of the rice. Maybe came with the store bought rice already.

So, you need to KILL those buggers when you've packed the rice.

So-called vacuum sealing ain't. You're not going to get 100% of the air out. And the mylar even lets air seep in over time.

Even with oxygen absorbing and the mylar packed real tight when you first pack it, after one year the bag is already a little bit less taut.

I've done tons of these bags over the years and this is my experience.

You also need to check that the oxygen absorbers you bought are actually working. Sometimes you get duds even from different vendors.

Aloha, does anyone here have any info or experience with satellite internet service?

Specifically, for island-wide power outage lasting 1 or more days.

I need it for my work (need to check emails, etc.).

It seems like there's the Inmarsat service (Iridium seems not to have good coverage for our specific location on the planet, the latitude) and then there's "exede" (?) service which maybe people use for their regular internet instead of cable/DSL?

Just vote for Tupola already.

Plenty of people will be voting for HanabUSA, you see her ads all the time on the Internet and on the roads.

Let's see how this plays out.

Sam King is the only one with a good answer:

4. What are your views regarding Hawaiian independence?

If this refers to independence from the United States, I do not think that is a good idea. The U.S. is the greatest country in human history, and Hawaii has outsized influence over U.S. policy. We have two senators in Congress for our small population, giving each Hawaiian voter a larger impact. Currently we get billions of dollars from the federal government, and I’ve yet to see an independence plan that would be more beneficial to the Hawaiian people.

Additionally, what would we do with independence? Who would lead us? Would we restrict our leadership pool based on race? Would those race-based leaders subject themselves to the kinds of audits that exposed the waste and abuse at OHA this year? There are too many unknowns to make this a viable plan.

I have no info on the At-Large candidates and will abstain from voting for them, unless someone else has info and can post guidance here.
Political Discussion / 2018 VOTING - City and County

See other thread on Governor (Tupola) and Lieuytenant Governor (Low) - these choices are simple. A ratings from NRA.

City and County, none of the candidates look good.

However, the LEAST BAD seems to be HUSSEY.

I read these:

Links are on that webpage to the other candidates.

All of them are bad.

I had wanted to see if any candidate supported vacation rentals (e.g., AirBNB) because this is fundamental to property rights (you own property, you do what you want with it).

But they all reject it and want legislation to restrict usage by property owner.

On Sit/Lie, I wanted to see if anyone rejected it, and they all seem to do so but only Hussey specifically called it out as "cruel" and he also would "draft and support legislation requiring that all government documents be published automatically to the web, with “publicly viewable” as the default setting."

That is simple, direct, no-BS runaround talk.

He also seems skeptical about Rail but doesn't outright say it: "Rail, if designed and executed correctly to meet commuter needs, will help to lessen traffic."

STODDARD seemed "nice" with many great ideas, but he also seemed to be a bit naive and I am not sure if he is aggressive enough to get things done.

Only thing I am not sure about for HUSSEY is that he is Chair of this thing called Men's March Against Violence, which sounds a bit liberal ditzy. Could be wrong. I tried briefly to read about it but couldn't understand what it was really for.

Tupola gets an A rating

Ige gets a D
Political Discussion / Re: Reposting NRA candidate ratings link

It's easy.

Only vote for A or B.

Regarding "?"

"?" essentially means F:

Refused to answer the NRA-PVF candidate questionnaire or a candidate who has made contradictory statements or taken positions that are inconsistent with the candidate's answers to the NRA-PVF candidate questionnaire or previous record. A rating of "?" often indicates indifference, if not outright hostility, to gun owners' and sportsmen's rights.
