Are these good products?
« on: August 27, 2013, 09:24:44 AM »
Anyone know if these are good products? For 1 and 2, are there better ones or ones that are just as good but cheaper? #3 is it the right size or is this overkill to shoot at Schofield up to 1500yrds? #4 does it work good? Was thinking about hiding some around the house. #5 unnessary?

4. Gunvault SpeedVault Safe

I have one.  Attached to the rear of my night stand with the buttons/door facing the bed.  I selected a combination that is easy to punch in without the need to look at the keypad.  I turned the key-press "beep" off.

Door drops open immediately, but with a "clunk" sound.  The door is counter-weighted and makes a somewhat loud noise.  If I don't have time to grab the gun after that noise alerts an intruder, then he's probably too close for me to safely try for it anyway.  It only takes 2 seconds to be armed and on target, so I'm not worried about the noise..

Once open, there is a small LED light inside the safe to help you find the gun.  The muzzle slips into a foam cushion to keep it solidly seated for easy gripping.  I keep a Glock 30 .45ACP with a Veridian C5L green laser/tactical light inside.  Fits perfectly in the foam cutout.

PROS:  Super quick and easy access to a handgun.  LED assist is useful.  Presents the butt end for fast retrieval for proper grip.  Small enough to conceal from view.  Very sturdy and secure.  Will keep kids, visitors, and undetermined thieves away from the handgun.

CONS:  Not sturdy enough to stop determined thief.  You should store that handgun in real gun safe if leaving the house for hours, then replace in the SpeedVault upon return.  Clunk sound when opening is loud enough to alert intruder in the room.

This video has a lot of detail.  As I said, I opted for installation  BEHIND the nightstand.  This video shows installation on the side of a nightstand.  I prefer (1) having the safe hidden from view, and (2) having the buttons & door/gun grip facing me in bed.

1) I make my own using used corn cob media.  A yard of jeans material is around $10.00 & can make at least a dozen bags.

2) I use a yoga mat - $8.00.

1. Larue Shooting Bag

Got mine out of a thrift store- former life was many-pocketed travel bag with handles, shoulder strap.  Something like $5.  Suits me perfectly.

Indispensible for target shooting.  Not so much for prowling around and shooting prairie dogs from prone... too much to carry.  I lie on a planet called Earth.

Son has one, of less capability, loves it.  He can now brag about shooting a prairie dog at a real, live, honest-to-G-d 162 yards with a .17 HRM without someone claiming he must've paced it off with little teeny tiny itty-bitty baby steps.

I own 2 of the midway mats . Super comfortable to shoot from .   I would recommend you reinforce the stitching on the bipod straps . Mats are cheap but shipping sucks lol . Also I got around 6 of those accuracy first sand bags . Their awesome to use if you don't have a monopod .
Fast is fine , accuracy is final

Had a Bushnell Elite 1500, the one issued to the Army. It was ok when conditions were perfect but once it got bright and sunny or mirage was prevalent the unit would not range out past 450 yards. Ended up selling it and getting a Leica RF 1600b, a little on the expensive side but no regrets. Buy once cry once - I always seem to learn the hard way  :shaka:

I was curious about that rangefinder myself. I have one in my amazon wish list but for now what I have been doing is using my phone with an app that uses the GPS to log distance, so I walk out to where my targets are placed. Start logging and it shows me in realtime how far I am from that starting point as I walk back to where I plan to shoot. Of course, not real handy for hunting but for just shooting at a range with no known distance it seems pretty handy :)

I use moving blankets I bought at costco for 25 bucks for a shooting mat. Speaking of bipod straps though I should try and sew some of those on there. Always have a hard time loading the bipod when it just slides forward.

I looked at shooting bags and ended up just making my own out of some heavy duty material and filled it with copperhead BB's, airsoft bb's and... fake rubber grapes. lol I figured the bb's would dampen the impact and the grapes would help absorb it. The damn thing probably cost me 80 bucks said and done with those bb's in there and it weighs 25-30 lbs  ::)
