Firearm suggestions for concealed carry.
« on: December 02, 2013, 09:57:20 PM »
I currently only have a glock 30 and it's a bit bulky for concealed carry. I've been looking, but sticking with glock and .45 cal, I've noticed what appears to be a new addition, the 30SF and wanted to know if anyone has had an opportunity to handle one of these and if there was a difference in size. I have also had my sights on the .357 glock 32 gen4. I am sure there are many opinions what's better and am open to any suggestions. I'm hoping for a single stack, easy to conceal. Help..
Thanks

I got a p238. It's kind of a peashooter, but all I need. 6+1

I know you are looking for .45 caliber:

(1)  I'd recommend the Sig P227.  Ten round double stack mag standard.

If you really want to stay with Glock:

(2)  If you consider a 9MM, the G26 is a hugely popular CCW arm.  Some LEOs use it as backup in an ankle holster, too.  Also has a ten round double stack mag standard.  I like the size and 9MM is no slouch.  I added a Crimson Trace red laser grip which doesn't interfere with any of my holsters.  It's actually small enough to carry in a pocket, too, Pants, kinda tough if not baggy.  Jacket or coat pocket ... no problem.  BTW, this is what State Dept Agent Deedy carried that night in the Waikiki McD's.

(3)  G27 .40S&W is also very popular.  Nine rounds single stack mag.  Many comment how concealable it is, yet has the .40 round power they like.

(4)  You mentioned the 30SF.  The 30SF is a Gen3 model.   Wasn't sure if you knew all of this, or if you mistyped 30S as 30SF, so I'll try to not mess this up....
I have the G30 Gen4, not the new G30S.
The G30S has a narrower slide that reduces width and weight of the slide.
The G30 Gen 4 has the same grip size as the G30 Gen3 SF, and it comes with back straps to increase front-to-back grip size if desired.
The G30S being a Gen3 frame has a bigger grip than my Gen4.  You are basically trading a wider, heavier slide that comes on the G30 Gen4 for a larger grip Gen3 frame on the G30S.
The G30 Gen4 fits the same holsters I bought for the G26 Gen4.  The grip sits outside the holster, and the frame isn't THAT much wider.

General stuff:
Size and weight are two of the most important factors for CCW.  If you aren't comfortable wearing it, then you will start finding excuses to not carry, and that is the worst thing to do.  9MM rounds at 115g are 1/2 the weight  of 230g .45ACP rounds.  Add to that the extra weight of most .45's, and you are committing to a couple of extra pounds where a pound and a half might fit you better.

With regard to weight, my P227 is not only the same size as my P226 MK25, it's also is 2 ounces lighter  That offsets some of the extra ammo weight.  The plus is, I can share holsters and other accessories.

If you intend to carry extra mag/s, the weight is again going to play a part.

Mostly my opinion.  Nothing scientific.  Hope it helps.

With the amount of fat/morbidly obese people in Hawaii, more then likely you can CCW anything you want and you won't print.  Just don't ankle carry while you are wearing slippers and shorts and you'll be fine...

BTW: I'm surprised nobody has even mentioned the M&P shield.

I'd stick with the Glock G26 myself as it is easy to modify, reliable, accurate, and cheap (relatively).

The Shield is one of the least comfortable subcompacts I have ever fired.

I have a Sig P290 that I absolutely love. It's only a 9mm but its small and incredibly accurate.

I own a 30SF and I like it a lot too. A little thick for conceal carry but with a IWB holster, it works pretty well.
