My First Deer
« on: February 01, 2014, 03:35:10 PM »

Flew to Maui for the weekend to go hunting with my cousin and scored this small one within 10 minutes after getting to the spot. Used a cmmg/dpms 308lr with 150gr Fed powershok soft points. The bullet entered the right side of the face, knocked out the spine and came out left side of the neck. 40yard shot.

Saw some goats also but could not get a shot before they took off.

Next, I'm looking forward to getting my first pig this year! Any tips?

Thanks, FS

Those small ones are good eating!  Over on Molokai, Uncle soaks it in straight kikkoman overnight then hangs it up to dry in the wind for half a day.  When it glazes over he bags 'em and stores in the fridge.  Sliced thin, ono!

Nice!  What part of Maui is it?  Was it on private land? Seems like there's choke deers on Maui roaming around.

Thanks guys. yeah I was pretty stoked to have such a successful  first hunt, since The instructors at the hunters Ed course told us we'd mostlikely not get anything our first year trying  :) I'm not too sure where we were hunting, but it was private land. I ended up soaking the tenderloins and blackstrap in yoshidas with ginger and garlic, then bbqed it, super good.

Ahh, I see. Bummer, right now I think spot and stalk is my only option at the moment.

"Block Trail". Find a area with fresh tracks or good trail they frequently use you might have success just sitting & waiting.  I have had success on just sitting near main trails.  Lucky-Lucky... if they around they will come out.  Watch the wind.  We use this method.  No dogs... we just find a spot, sit and enjoy the scenery.  The two boars I posted that we caught on  12 Dec was caught just waiting at areas we thought they might cross... Like I said "Lucky-Lucky".   Good Luck!
