Unique Powder recipe??
« on: February 10, 2014, 05:30:23 AM »
Any body have a start point recipe for Unique powder they would be willing to share? I scored a pound at X-Ring the other day and finally can get to learning to use my dillon 550B. I have 124gr. FMJ by Montana Gold bullets and will be shooting them with my G17 9MM.

Thanks!

Good Morning Sir,

Yeah we came over on a last minute trip for the girls state soccer tourney. Stopped at x-ring since it is right there (and Tanioka's of course) and got lucky on some powder. Had I known you were so close I would have tried to hook up to meet you finally. Next time maybe.

I was going to start at 5.0, that may be a little to little then I guess? What OAL would you suggest. I have read in manuals and on the inter web that 1.155-1.6 are the range to be at; good or bad.

Start at 5.4 gr.
Unique is a fairly dirty burning powder that needs some pressure to get clean.
I forget what the OAL for ball is. But i'll bet if you measure some factory ball and try to match it, you will be in pretty good shape.
Don't forget to taper crimp the round too. Very important.

Next time let me know if you coming. I'll take you to the bakery near Tanioka's so you can get some really good Filipino pastry to take back with you.

im loading the same weight bullet now for 9mm.
loading at 1.25 oal
crimp about .376 that could be a little tighter
i started at 5.0 and worked down to 4.7
just trying to find the lowest charge before failure to cycle.
Will continue on to 4.6 and so on.
I have a chrono but have not had a chance to see what these loads came in at.  Big huge chunky powder.

This is where I am running into confusion ??? My manuals all say that at OAL 1.150 at 4.0gn low and I think it was 4.7 high (not certain manuals are outside in the shed). Wouldn't the 1.25 cause over pressure? Please don't mind my remedial questions as I am in the learning to reload phase right now.

Speer manual #12 says minimum unique charge with their 124 gr TMJ head is 5.2 up to 5.8gr. OAL tested is 1.135.

OAL dimesions can vary slightly with different heads.
Generally, seating bullet longer lowers pressure.
Your charge weights are so low, you will be fine.

If you looking for maximum economy, I would suggest a faster burning powder if you can find any.
Almost guarantee Unique going be pilau at that low charges.

Hey Dave,

Nah just looking to see the full extent of what the powder is capable of.  I usually load at 4.8

Update: went to range to see if I could get failure to cycle, went down to 4.6, 4.5, 4.4, and 4.3, still going strong

What do you shoot? Does it get really dirty at the lower powder charges?

Here are your statistics on the previous message. Looks like something is funky when you get down below 4.9gr.

I know it right lol, so hard to meter that stuff.  Drops may have been almost a 4.9
