I'm currently learning Japanese.  Mostly for personal reasons, but also will help with work.  There have been a number of work opportunities to relocate there, but I haven't seriously entertained any of them.

Another place that I MIGHT consider would be the PI.  I still have old business contacts there and friends with family there that could help things.  That and language really isn't a barrier, or at least it wasn't when I had business stuff there.

Japanese is on that business list, as it is spoken fluently by over 200 million people world wide. They also highlighted that Japan is once again starting to make leaps and bounds in the technology industry like they once did in the 80's, and the fact that the dollar is failing and the yen is rising shows that Japan (and Asia for that matter) will definitely have economic and political power in the near future.

Only problem I see with learning Japanese is that China is already setting up to become the new super power, as well as capture the world's reserve currency. If that happens, Japan's market is definitely going to be burdened due to those century long grudges, especially with regards to what happened during WWII.

the biggest problem with japan is trying to move there
the japanese government is pretty strict about foreigners
there are lots of people there illegally, of course
but it's not just a "i'll go to japan because things look grim here" kind of thing
