Making a 9mm rimmed case for use in revolvers
« on: May 16, 2015, 04:04:01 PM »
During another discussion here: https://2ahawaii.com/index.php?topic=19093.0 I talked about trying to make a 9mm rimmed case for use in 9mm revolvers that require the use of moon clips. I own a couple of 9mm revolvers one requires the use of moon clips and one does not. The revolver that requires moon clips is the Ruger Speed 6. I don't shoot it much due to the fact that inserting cartridges into and removing spent cases out of moon clips can be tough and frustrating. When I did shoot it I did so without using moon clips. I built a case poker out of wood that I used to poke out the spent cases. It worked okay but it was never quite as easy as say a 357 revolver to eject cases.

I noticed when the 9mm cartridges were attached to moon clips the rounds were headspaced like a cartridge with a rim. So I got the idea to try and cut down a 38 Special case and size it in my 9mm die. I did this and the rim just happens to be the perfect thickness to headspace exactly the same as the 9mm cartridge in a moon clip. I fabricated 6 of these cases and inserted them into the cylinder. The back of the case sets perfectly against the frame where the firing pin hits the primer. No matter how hard I tried nor whatever angle I turned the revolver I could not make the action bind up while pulling the trigger in double action mode. I loaded up some dummy rounds and tried the same test. I loaded up 6 rounds to try at the range. I'll check for any signs of case trauma when I shoot them. I'll also look for accuracy. The 38 cases are thicker than the 9mm cases so I assume that there is smaller case volume. Plus the bullets bulges the cases out a small amount.

I have attached some pictures:

I didn't have any 38 Short Colt lying around. But one question, why does he shoot 38 Short Colt out of his 627? Is there a particular reason? Just curious.

Steel challenge competitive edge, revolver class.
Rumor has it some Oldfart used such a gun to beat his 27 yr old son running a glock last year.
But like I said, it's just a rumor.

As so many great ideas do!  The challenge is to have one that's still a great idea the following day.  Nicely done!

Well, that is very kewl!!! What sort of velocity are you seeing with the 38 Short Colt? What weight bullet? Does the 38 Short Colt case have a recess so you can insert it into a moon clip?

I believe he was using 125 gr lead-coated bullets in 8 puka moon clips.
Power factor was minimal for steel challenge. A pure game gun.

I have one of these http://www.mooncliptool.com to load .45 ACP into moon clips to shoot from my Governor. It makes it easy to both load and unload moon clips. You can change the arbor to be able to load different calibers on other sized moon clips. Very cool what your doing with your experiment(s)!

That tool looks well made. I prefer moon clips over speed loaders and I usually end up cutting myself at some point either loading or unloading the clips for a session. Anything that helps is welcome in my tool box. Even if this rimmed case works out for me I still will be loading moon clips for my 8 puka 627.
