Prevention is the key...in other words don't piss off your co workers. Be nice.
According to Owens, extreme forms of violence in the workplace can be minimized if employees just show respect for one another. One of his tips to achieve that is to "never allow yourself to embarrass, humiliate, or attack the dignity of anyone."

Oh boy.. more PC crap.  "It's not the bad guys' fault but the victims'."   They want people to kowtow to predators instead of kicking their asses.  Baaa baaa baaaa...

How about teaching people the 5th commandment.. "Thou shalt not murder"?   You murder someone, your soul will be damned for all eternity.   Oh wait.. they don't want teaching people about God.  How is that working out so far?

Jumped the gun, figuratively speaking.   I think Jeff Owens advice for folks is good though.

Quote
Owens says if the situation escalates to a person coming to your job threatening to shoot people -- your first option is to run.

"Get out of the danger area. Get to a location of safety," he said.

If you can't -- both he and other experts in the field say find a place to hide. And if that isn't an option either -- you're last resort should be to fight.

"It's very important to understand that once somebody has embarked on this activity of going in and killing people, they're not just a grief person, they're a killer, and we need to have that mindset that they're predators and they have one goal in mind -- that's to kill," said Owens.

Owens says if you have to fight -- you should adopt a "kill or be killed" mentality before going after the shooter.

"In this situation because it is life and death, that person has to overcome that natural reluctance to harm another person because if they don't do something to defend themselves, they will be killed," said Owens.

In the most basic sense, and assuming that no one is armed, the advice is relatively good. That being said, if you have any training, not just gun training, you must recognize that each situation is different and that you should be ready to take advantage of any opening that may occur. For example, if you are close to the shooter but his back is to you, do you run or do you attack and try to disable him. What, if in the same situation, he has a firearm malfunction or needs to reload? Do you use that opportunity to run or attack?

What if you're hiding and from your position you notice an opportunity to relatively safely attack because the shooter is distracted, has a malfunction or needs to reload?

Add to the mix an armed person who can respond with their firearm, what is the best tactics? Do they have only the single magazine in their firearm or do they have an extra one? How one responds must be based on multiple factors and one must be able to maintain critical thinking skills in order to maximize the potential to disable the shooter and save lives.

This is the most important thing I got from Owen's comments.

+1 on the kill or be killed mentality. Standing there frozen in fear does nothing but make easy targets for the gunman.

I would say that being nice to people is still a relevant piece of advice. Obviously it is useless once the shooting starts however being polite to coworkers or schoolmates as a matter of rule might make the difference of whether there is a shooting or not.
