Browning Hi Power(N00b edition)

Always wanted one but the retail was always a little more than I wanted to pay.  I've been reading/youtubing about Surplus Belgian(FN) ones for <500, anyone have any experience/suggestions for surplus Brownings.

Dwayne at Danger Close Tactical had a few he may still have one left. He had one at his booth last month at the gun show. http://www.danger-close-tactical.com/index.html

Probably one of the most iconic pistols ever produced!  Buy one and I will show you whatever you need to know about it!

Thanks, that's cool of you to offer.  Hopefully I can find 1 before the end of the year, I have a bad feeling there's going to be a buying FRENZY where you can't find anything and HPD's lines are going to be unbelievable...

Just did a quick check online and they seem to be going for $900-1100 new!  Wow!

There are some used ones with most of the decent condition ones in the $800 range or so.  Of course there are the ones in the $400-500 range, but those seem like a big gamble.

I've always been interested in them, but never was really that serious about getting one.

Even the oldest most worn bop will still shoot fine and function on powder puff reloads.  They are excellent pistols

All of my guns are shooters (no safe queens).  That said, I am usually leery of buying used guns since you never know if the person is selling due to having had problems with the gun.  Maybe a little pessimistic on my part, but I just don't want that doubt in there.  Especially with a gun that I am not familiar with.  Give me a beater Glock any day though.   ;D

As mentioned above, I generally stay away from used guns and generally am willing to spend more for a new gun.  Surplus offerings are often very tempting though.  If there was a "try before you buy" method, I'd be all over that.

And that is a nice looking gun!

BHP is in the same category as the glock reliability wise.  Good enough for the sas for nearly 90 years.  Still issued.

I had 2 HP's in the 80's--both excellent guns and very accurate--golf balls at 50 feet and soda cans at 50 yards were no problem.  Friends liked the guns so much they talked me out of them and I haven't seen them since!

I lucked onto a used HP a few years ago at an LGS and have kept it ever since--no way I'd sell this one.

If you know what to look for in a used gun you can usually score good deals.  Nothing wrong with paying retail for a piece that you'll probably keep forever.

Nighthawk makes a HP now--big money but you'll have pride of ownership knowing you've bought the best.  I recently shot a friend's Nighthawk 9mm 1911 and it was money well spent.

Cool! You know the shops hours are 4-9PM, M-F, Saturday's are by appointment. Dunno if that helps with your work schedule or not, best of luck.

Hi Powers are awesome, great shooting pistol with an incredible history. I have shot beat to shit surplus hi powers that functioned flawlessly. I have a good friend who owns one with a trigger job and its a tack driver. I'd love to get my hands on a Inglis version with the detachable Broomhandle style stock, my dad has one and its a blast to shoot. I wonder if it would be legal here?

I've taken a few classes from a former ADF SAS member and he spoke very highly of the BHP that they were issued.  His experience was pre-2005, but he also had more recent former SAS members in their training cadre that also spoke highly of the BHP.  They were not shy about sharing their negative opinions of firearms as well.  Interesting that once they left the ADF and they had freedom to choose whatever they wanted, the vast majority of them chose Glock.  At the time, I didn't ask why that was, but I would guess it is more due to Glock's popularity in use for both LE and armed civilians and not due to deficiencies in the BHP.

Got one, thanks everyone.

Great!  Looking forward to seeing how you like it!
