Boots are highly subjective because different manufacturers fit different foot shapes. My feet are wider and Timberlands work well/take a lot of abuse. I also use 5.11's for motorcycle boots because they have decent ankle padding and side zip. Took them hiking once to break them in and they were very comfortable, but no clue about how long they would last in heavy use.

I gotta say the new oakley boots are really nice and comfortable.  I'm not going to say they will hold up to daily use and wear though, I already have a small wear in the heel fabric and Only been wearing mine for 6 months. They are hella freaking comfortable though.

I got a pair of Rocky's that i like. SUPER lightweight compared to Belleville and Altama. Gore-tex too, so you don't have to worry about rain and stuff.

If you are not planning on wearing these to war, DO NOT invest in designated military boots like danner, rockies, belleville, etc. While they are a good investment, they are built for heavy use in military environments, and are highly discouraged from being used as an all purpose boot for other activities like hiking because of their weight.

Sorry< I like my rockies, their not heavy at all and SUPER comfortable from the first time I slipped them on.

for me, my voodoo tactical china boots the soles are just now beginning to come apart from the boot.  but since maybe because they got completely soaked and was running around in the mud?  I have to buy on the web because nobody sells 7W / 7EE here always start at 8s.  anyways these are the most comfortable and fit (7W) right out of the box and low price point I will just keep getting them.  The others I tried all seem to run too narrow even in EE or Wide.  No matter new balance, asolo,, etc.  I got some other ones milsurp but forget the brands already will have to take them out later. 

oh yeah not tactical boot but Merrells freaking rock too.  I got week ankles so would like taller boot but for general they feel great and fit good too.

I need to find some good steel toes.

I have wide feet as well.  A few years ago, I bought a pair of Keen hiking boots and they've held up really well.  They are available in wide, but I think I got a standard width and they fit well.  I also noticed that the particular model that I got seemed to be less restricted around the toe, which helped relieve pressure on the sides of the feet.  This is the newer version of what I have.

I have a couple of pairs of Merrell and while they fit ok, I've noticed that I had one started to separate around the toe, where the sole/treads are glued to the upper. 

I've also tried Salomon and Lowa.  The Lowa seemed really well built, but they also ran on the narrow side, at least for me and it was tough to find a pair in 2E.

Once I un-fat myself, I'm considering shelling out the cash and having some boots custom made from the guys who make boots for the wildland firefighters on the mainland.

$300 bucks a pair usually, but they are custom fitted to your feet specifically and are TOUGH.

Initially, I'll probably just burn through my excess pairs of military service boots while I save up. Wish I could have my Bellevilles I wore for 3 years and on deployment re-soled locally, but they don't offer the type of sole I want/need.

We are looking for tactical style boots. It's just for wearing to the range and for fun. Not going to war or anything. Are 5.11 products good? I have no idea which model to get. Any other brands you like?

What is your price range?

I had an 8 inch side zip pair of 5.11 that I used for about 2 or 3 years. They were comfortable and the zipper worked well. It claimed to be water proof but after hours in the rain they would leak. They had a composite toe which was nicer than a steel toe. Steel toes also conduct heat and cold too well.

I have also had 2 or 3 pairs of magnums. They are good for the price you pay but they wear out.

My current boot is a made in america Danner boot. Even it leaks a little in long exposure to rain. With steel toes it is too heavy, no more steel toes for me.

I am looking for my next boot and want to buy american. Currently looking at the Rocky S2V. Their black ones are not waterproof though.

I did see these and kind of want to buy them but haven't found them in stores here anywhere yet. Not made in america but for the priceI think they are probably good quality.

Took 'em to Japan and walked the hell out of 'em (Iwatayama, all around Osaka, all around Shinagawa, all around Kyoto, all around Tokyo, etc).

Downside: slippery on wet surfaces... would think twice about using these as dedicated footwear for constant use in Hawaii (where surfaces are typically wet/mossy).

... the search for the perfect shoe/boot continues, but for now, these are GTG.

Good timing for an update to this thread.  My Keens are starting to break down.  A couple of the loops that form the loops for the laces are starting to break away from the upper.  Still good, but showing signs of breaking down, so will start looking for a replacement. 

I can appreciate the "test" of a walking boot or any shoes for a Japan trip.  When I am in Japan, whether it be for work or vacation, I end up walking A LOT!  On my first vacation trip there, I thought I had a pair of good running shoes broken in from wearing around town here.  Turned out that pair didn't perform that well. 

Have a pair of Vasque breeze 6" hiking boots which is light (to me), fit is good and comfortable, vibram soles and laces stay tied with good eyelets.  Use wool socks for comfort
Older pair in a sage green color.  I would get another for a backup.
