to me if your Hawaiian at heart with good intentions that's what matters you can't blame a skin color for what has been done , but only the evil that lies beneath the skin .

Very little detail in the article. Almost seems like he is pursuing a legal proceeding to clean up any questions of ownership due to lost or absent land ownership records. Doesn't sound like a lawsuit to me.  Anytime land is bought there is a potential for claims to be made against the property.

I think what's happening in Kauai is not good.   Always say that if you fill soda in a carton of milk, 1-2-3... guess what, it's not milk.

Back when they first allowed Hawaii land to be owned by people other then the royals. They did not use titles or deeds, People just got given the land and that was it. Over time this land was split up to family members sometimes in small percentages of a plot.
So what he is doing is trying to find out if is if any one else has a claim to the property he has purchased and if they do they need to come forward and prove that claim. Be it from a latter issued deed or title or through some other evidence.If they cant prove it or dont come forward they give up that claim.
 The reason he is suing is so that he can issue legal documents to those that the believe may have a claim. Giving them 30 days of receipt of the documents to come and notify him (some of the people are dead and no relatives are obvious)

Is this the same property that his neighbors were upset about the huge wall around it? Zuckerberg spoke out against Trump's wall, but I guess its ok for him to build a wall to keep his family safe.

if you buy real estate aren't you supposed to do a title search to make sure the seller has the legal right to sell you that property?

No it's not the same. Legally he owns the title to the property, but at some point family's may have split a share of the property.

These people have little to no claim because they do not hold a feed or title, they would have little to no proof of ownership. Hesactually doing the right thing by giving them a chance to make a claims, the people he's suing are people that research shows may have a claim not that they do.

I believe He's also required to do this because he want to combine the smaller lots he owns to one larger lot of the purpese of taxation, identification and ownership.

When I bought my condo the title company did their checks but then they offered me insurance just in case there was something they missed. So even though a title check was made, someone could still turn around and make a claim against my condo a decade later. I would get to stay in my condo but I would not be able to sell it until the issue was resolved. Problem is that if someone makes a claim on the Land Zuckerberg bought then it can sort of freeze land assets in court. It can take years to sort out.

A friend explained to me that his family had 2400 acres in Big Island but the state or someone sold it. Of course land lines were not clear and paperwork was next to non existent. I cannot recall the concept but there is something about using the property to keep it yours. If there is no record and the land just sits vacant for so long then it makes it more difficult to assert a claim on it. However if you regularly visited the land or used it then you can establish it as your land. Apparently his families land is still in legal limbo between the family, the state, and the people who bought it. Sounds very messy. I am sure Zuckerberg is trying to clean it up ahead of time.

If you pay property tax on 2400 acres, that's pretty solid evidence of ownership.
