Molokai trip
« on: August 08, 2023, 06:02:28 PM »
Went to Molokai to work this week on Mokulele Air.  I had my handgun in a locked pistol case inside of my luggage and ammo.  Lady had no clue how to process it, had to check around, and still wasn't sure.  I waited 30 minutes for her to figure it out.

She asked me to clear the handgun at the counter so I reluctantly did. She had no idea what she was looking for.

Then she said the firearm has to be separate from the luggage, and wanted to charge me an extra $35 sporting equipment charge.  I declined as that's usually for separate rifle cases.

So she asked me to attach the handgun case to the outside of the luggage.  I'm like WTF but I'm like screw it whatever I'm tired of waiting.  I strap it with my belt and tape.

After all my travels with firearms, this was a new experience surpassing the Delta zipties.
.
Molokai is a nice relaxing place with a lot of good scenery and small town experience.  Visited the only retail gun store in town.  Police dept only process firearms on MWFs, there are no firearm instructors teaching on the island, and one accessable private firearms range.

There was no gun range that I knew of when I lived on Molokai from 1950 to 1968.  We would shoot at my cousin's house in Kamiloloa, east side of island. We would also shoot at an abandoned dump.  That was fun as we would shoot old cars, washing machines, televisions and anything else that would break.

After the second or third "questionable" request, I personally would have asked for a supervisor.  I also would have been browsing the airlines policies online while I waited, assuming I hadn't planned ahead and printed them out.

Some of those requests were just ridiculous.  Like asking someone to clear a firearm in a public airport.  Did she point to a clearing drum so you could safely cycle the trigger?

I'd take an abandoned dump over something like KHSC any day of the week and twice on Sunday. :shaka:

Supervisor didn't seem to know either and they were looking at their website.  Find it hard to believe this is the first time they had someone with a handgun case.

Was tempted, but I'm trying to lose weight and I'd eat it all.

I knew a co-worker that periodically used the airlines to go to Molokai to hunt at a friends property.  He would go with some other hunters.

Maybe they are used to handling long guns?  But to me it shouldn't make any difference.

Most airlines experience new hire "dunno syndrome," but I'm surprised the supervisor was as clueless, too.

The hard part is trying to tell someone in authority how to do their job.  It's easier to lie and say, "Last time i flew on your airline, this is what the agent did."  Hopefully they see that as their own agent knowing the ropes, not having to be trained by the traveler.

Mokulele airlines doesn't do a very good job servicing the island of Molokai.

Prices skyrocketed after they bought out Makani kai
Delays & cancelations are common
All sorts of new fees & procedures
Staff not familiar with FAA rules.

Everyone misses makani kai
There is supposed to be a new airlines that is trying to start up to service Molokai

My flight time was changed twice before the day of travel.
