New guy with a plethora of questions.
« on: August 29, 2023, 11:06:15 AM »
Hello everyone, I am getting stationed in Honolulu and had a few questions. I plan on bringing just one firearm, maybe more just depends on the stipulations.

I understand firearms needs to be registered with HPD within 72hrs. I cannot bring my NFA and mags over 10 rounds.

Here are my questions-

Does ammo need to be registered? Also, is there a max amount we can possess?
Other than “assault weapons” what guns are allowed?
What range do you suggest to shoot at?
How active is the USPSA?
Which organization puts on the best USPSA matches?
Is there a local discord?

Thank you all in advance!

ammo does not need to be registered.  no limit
you can have larger than 10 round mags for a rifle but pistol mags are 10 rounds limit
by "assault weapon" do you mean full auto?  or AR/AK type rifle?  bc AR's and AK's are allowed just not full auto
there is Kokohead shooting complex which is an outdoor public range with pistol bullseye 25 yards and 50 yards, and rifle bullseye out to 100 yards.  the shooting action bays and steel target silhouette range are closed right now, not sure when or if they will re open
a couple indoor ranges and a couple military ranges that go out much further than kokohead

Thank you for the info I was just referring to black rifles as we call it. It’s hard to find up-to-date laws when there have been multiple changes from what I can see. Does Hawaii allow 14.5”pin and welded to 16 inch?

FYI

The Kokohead bay's are where the USPCA and other shooting orgs host events.  This section of the range has been closed since September 2022.  Which means the competitive shooting scene currently doesn't exist on Oahu due to no where being able to held events.

Once you register any gun, you cannot unregister it.  So keep this in mind with what you plan to bring over.   It also takes time to bring the gun to the police station to register.  On a good day and you're the only person in line, it takes less than 20 mins.  On other days where there are 3 or 10 people in front of you, anywhere from an hour to 2+ hours.  HI also has a "places to keep" law. WHich means you cannot bring your gun to the police station to register by showing it to them and go grab lunch after.  Or grab lunch on the way to the police station. U must go straight from home to the station and back. Or work to the station and back.

Also any gun registered and you plan on "permanently" leave the state, you have to notify the police within X days or you're breaking the law (not a felony though).

Google "HRS134" on Hawaii's gun laws.  And ask here if you got any questions.
