Maybe Utah

My wife, Who  a Japanese, has finally admitted she’s had it with Hawaii. We were looking at relocating to Roseville, Ca because my oldest daughter lives there but taxes and socialism has scratched that of our list. We are looking at St. George, Utah. It’s about 8 hours to her home so not too bad. I’ve had it with this so called “paradise” and need to go where I’m free. We’ve been in the area of St. George about  3 years ago and liked what we saw. Being 70 and the missus being 69 our lives are growing short and we need to enjoy ourselves. We were also looking at Genoa, NV but the weather is too cold (Lake Tahoe area). We’re in the preliminary stage rite now but will hopefully be leaving here in a year.  :D

Get a nice camper, so the distance between you and family becomes a nice road trip.  It'll open up more house-buying locations to consider.

I'd avoid an RV unless you find a great deal on a new-ish one that's mechanically sound.  Or maybe look at rentals.  I've seen too many stories of how the RV market is not like car and truck sales.  You don't get the same legal protections as you would a regular new vehicle purchase.

Anyway, it might be an option.  I'd personally like to get out and travel after being on this rock for so long.  Some people sell their homes and just travel for a year or so, then look at where to settle.  Depending on your field, you might even be able to work remotely while on the road.

I have a hanai brother who lives in Hurricane, UT. Same area as St. George. They love it there. They retired there from CA and bought a second home for income. Their daughter and son-in-law are renting the house from them. And I am hanai uncle with the daughter and son-in-law as well and they love it there. It is an area my wife and I considered moving to when I retired. Traffic can get a little bad during tourist season. And I guess the SASS Senior Games are held around there.

Although my experience with Roseville is 40 years ago, it has exploded,  stay away.
In fact avoid CA completely!
St. George gets cold and is windy.
I'm on the BI.  I priced out moving back to the mainland
some years ago. I'm used to 100 inches of cooler rain per year,
from 20+ years living east of Seattle in the mountains.
My return choice was South Western WA state on or just off
the Columbia river.  Close to the ocean, world class medical, tax free shopping in Astoria,
good fishing, no income tax, and acreage you can shoot on without dealing with
cops.
Funny that when I added it all up the BI and WA costs they were a wash
price wise.  I even factored in the cost of dumping trash.
I decided to stay on the BI, I just didn't want to move again.
I have a few more toys than most people. I'd need two containers.

Guns laws suck here, but maybe take a look at the outer islands.
There aren't enough cops to enforce them all.
Across the gulch from me they can and do shoot all day long.
Cops won't go there.
Take a look at BI or Molokai.

Most people don't know that Deserts get COLD!

Good luck!
Hate to see you go.

I agree with groveler. Rural areas of the BI is about the closest you can get to living a free life in Hawaii. People here build with no permits.  Shoot on their own property and cops are few and seldom seen, which may or may not be good.  It is not like that on the whole island so if you move here and don't want to be bothered and want privacy, stay away from towns and subdivisions with lots less than 3 acres.  You should take a 2 week trip here, after the quarantine is lifted, and check out homes for sale.
