There are voters who pay no taxes, live at home with mom or dad, don't understand how large construction and industrial machines run, how trucking keeps our economy running, and how many day-to-day products require petroleum.
Until we have solar, hydro and nuclear power EVERYWHERE that can keep up with electricity demand 24/7, coal and oil fire electric generators are required.
Hawaii, the most oil-dependent state in the US for electricity production has been pushing the renewable energy goal for the state back since 2020. I think it's now in the 2035-2040 range.
Until renewable energy capacity can surpass the amount of energy needed to MINE FOR RAW MATERIALS, MANUFACTURE AND DISTRIBUTE those products, we need fossil fuels to facilitate the amount of renewable energy needed to replace most of the fossil fuel electricity production required. If we went to nuclear everywhere hydroelectric isn't viable, we could get there sooner.
Machines that mine materials needed for renewable energy products, manufacturing them in factories and plants, and trucking or flying them to consumers and power plants requires massive engines relative to a LEAF or Tesla car. We can't run them on clean water and sunshine.
